Main Idea of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King/Priest Son! How are you going to run? As the book begins to end, it becomes clear that this is a book written to believers about eternal reward. Go Ahead Training I’m here Discipline: Are we willing to learn? 12 Dos and Don’ts of Responding • Don’t answer medical questions. “What’s wrong with you?” or “Have you lost your mind?” • NEVER answer rhetorical questions. “What, do you think I’m stupid?” • Don’t interfere with Divine interaction “What did I do to deserve this?” • Avoid hypothetical traps “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it?” 12 Dos and Don’ts of Responding • Don’t correct poor English. “I’ll sorry you!” • Never correct hyperboles. “I’ve told you a million times” • Ignore poor logic “Don’t you look at me with those eyes” “Quiet, I can’t hear myself think” • Don’t challenge prophecies “Keep doing that and your face will freeze that way” “You’ll poke your eye out” “Someday you’ll thank me” 12 Dos and Don’ts of Responding • Realize when memory is going. “Were you born in a barn?” • Don’t engage in metaphysical issues. “Wipe that smile off your face” • Don’t argue musical tastes “Don’t use that tone with me, mister!” • NEVER challenge threats “If you don’t stop crying, I’ll give you something to cry about” Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:3-4 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. How are you going to run? Keeping our focus on Christ and what He accomplished helps contextualize our own problems. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? Difficulties can wear us out and discourage us. A focus on Christ can counter that. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? One of the most common tendencies is to exaggerate our problems. Go Ahead Training I’m here Hebrews 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.” Hebrews 12:7-8 (It is for discipline that you endure.) God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. How are you going to run? If we’re going to be partners, we need to be trained. “Illegitimate” = a child with no legal standing and not in line to inherit. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? When our child-training comes, it comes from a Father who loves us and is getting us ready for eternity. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? Part of that involves character, part of it involves a “letting go”, and part we won’t know until the Day dawns. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? If we walk away from the child-training, like the Prodigal Son, we lose both the training and the reward. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? Difficulties will still come. They will either enslave and destroy or they will build and prepare. Go Ahead Training I’m here James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:6-8 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:9-12 Let the lowly brother glory in his exaltation, but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he will pass away. For no sooner has the sun risen with a burning heat than it withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beautiful appearance perishes. So the rich man also will fade away in his pursuits. Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Responding well to trials – James 1 By welcoming them Respond well By not blaming God James 1 – By welcoming them • • • • • God has a purpose to develop us Endurance produces results God will grant wisdom We are the objects of His attention God will reward Go Ahead Training I’m here James 1:13-15 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. James 1:16-18 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. James 1 – By not blaming God • • • • • God never provokes us to sin Our lusts/desires provoke us to sin Lust leads to sin Sin leads to the experience of death God brings life Go Ahead Training I’m here Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:9-10 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Father knows best! Unlike human fathers, our Father always knows what’s best. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? The result is that we share in our lives what He has made us in position. Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? When faced with difficulty, our response determines the outcome. Go Ahead Training I’m here Responding well to trials – James 1 Respond well Maturity and reward OR, if not… Enslavement and loss How are you going to run? The difficulties do not end when we react badly. But, they will impact…one way or another! Go Ahead Training I’m here How are you going to run? What’s it going to be? Training Or Loss? Go Ahead I’m here Matthew 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Luke 10:38-40 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” Luke 10:41-42 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 14:25-27 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. How are you going to run? Faith is essential to be successful and maximize the benefit. Go Ahead Training I’m here Hebrews 12:11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
