Musical Theatre
Grade 11 and 12
Rooms: Auditorium, 108, 112 Vocal Room, Cafeteria
Teachers: Mr. Blakey (drama), Ms. Marsh (dance), Ms. Riedstra (vocal)
This course covers the triple model using vocal singing, dance and acting practices. You will be
responsible for participating as a group and working individually in these three areas. The course
will work towards a major production performance in mid April.
Your final mark will be 70% based on the year’s work (including 10 % December exam)
and 30% based on the final culminating activity.
The year looks like this:
What is Musical Theatre? introduction to the course and each other
Training the Instrument
three rotations between music, dance, and drama
begin the field work for our production, exploring
production roles
Setting the Stage
read through the script, audition for major roles,
choosing/researching/ presenting production roles, gain
performing experience through performance practice,
(The Rosedale Revue, The Auction)
Getting it together
Rehearse for the musical (includes 3 Saturday practices,
after school rehearsals, lunch and mornings). You will
be required to devote substantial personal time to the
production role responsibility (costumes, lights, sets, props,
etc.)
The Performance
final dress rehearsals every night after March break, a three
day run with four performances (April) and the strike and
clean up the week after the show.

The year’s work is broken down into four areas:
Knowledge and Understanding
knowledge of technical skills, historical information, production
theory, safety, conventions of the art forms, terminology and
vocabulary of the art forms
Application
improvisation, creativity, team work, demonstration of technical
skills in three areas, rehearsal and performance skills, transfer of
knowledge and skills to new contexts, making connections
Communication
quality of performance for different purposes, verbal and non
verbal expression, writing skills, rehearsal /performance
etiquette, organization, expression of ideas,
Thinking
critical thinking, reflection, analysis, problem solving,
processing, planning,
Our Goals in Music Theatre









receive training in three different areas; dance, drama and vocal music
learn how to care for one’s body – the performer’s instrument
gain confidence through taking part in daily practice, presentation, and larger productions
instill a sense of responsibility and discipline through daily practice both as an individual
and as a team player
integrate and relate the three disciplines
gain a repertoire that is widely accepted and recognized in the professional theatre
community
explore the history and cultural significance of the repertoire chosen for the year and to
discover the rich history of the art form
think critically about the skills learned in the course and how they are transferable to other
areas of one’s life and education.
Learning - through research, planning and practice - the production elements required to
produce a fully-mounted musical for a public audience
Expectations:









be in attendance at all times and be on time for class and rehearsals
change into proper rehearsal clothes and wear proper footwear as required
tie up your hair, remove all jewelry and gum each class and rehearsal
participate to your fullest ability
cooperate and respect the people and property around you
bring your journal, script, music score, a binder, a pen, and paper to each class
complete assignments and homework as assigned
hand in all assignments on time
attend extra rehearsals at lunch, on the weekends (3 Saturdays), in the morning and
after school as required for performances and productions
 help with costumes, makeup, sets, props, front of house, lighting, publicity, etc. as
required and assigned
 set up rehearsal space before each rehearsal period/class and strike the set at the end of
each rehearsal/class
 help in the striking and cleanup after the production

Practical tests, singing, dancing and acting
