Starlings are dark, medium sized birds that travel in large flocks and easily over-populate areas. How did they get here? 1890, a drug manufacturer released roughly 60 European starlings in central park. The starlings continued to replenish and are currently one of the most abundant and prosperous birds in the world. How do they affect the environment? Spread disease mostly between livestock Eat and destroy gardens or fields of fruit Large population and flocking results in noise and excretion complaints Danger around airports 1960!!! In 1960 a large flock of starlings collided with a aircraft resulting in the plane crashing and causing 62 deaths. Black Rat A black to dark colored rat eating mostly grain and which is smaller than the brown rat. How did they get here? Originally native to Asia, the black rat finally got to the United States in the 1500’s How do they affect the environment? Spread disease, including salmonella Eat and invade birds nests and the eggs Cause many endangered species Asian Carp Large fish that can grow up to 100 pounds. They can eat up to 20 percent of their body weight per day. They are a very dangerous, fast growing, and adaptable fish. How did they get here? 1970- Asian carp were brought to americato filter the water in fish ponds. The carp then spread and majorly repopulated, currently swimming in open water of 23 states. How do they affect the environment? Out-competing Native plants and vegetation Introducing disease Getting to the Great Lakes Japanese beetle A colorful, small, destructive beetle. It has clumsy flying abilities and a brown shell over its wings. How did they get here? 1919- First Japanese beetle discovered in America was in a plant nursery. It is suspected that beetle larvae in flower bulbs, was accidentally transported on a ship to the U.S. How do they affect the environment? Eat vegetation and flowers Garden vegetables Grass roots Damage done to a common leaf These are only a few of the 50 thousand invasivespecies in the U.S.!!
