The Vampire
Diaries:
The Awakening
By L.J. Smith
Published by HarperCollins
Publishers in 1991
This book was written in two parts
but I only read the first part
This book is set in the small town of
Fell’s Church, Virginia. You first meet
Elena Gilbert, the main character,
writing in her diary before the first
day of school. She meets up with her
friends, but soon a new boy shows up
and Elena decides she has to have him.
Protagonist
The protagonist is
Elena Gilbert. She
is the popular girl
who everyone
wants to be or be
with. She has
blonde hair and is
pale, she is
beautiful.
Protagonist
Also, the reader sees
what is happening
through Stefan
Salvatore’s point of
view. Stefan is
mysterious,
undeniably
attractive, and good
hearted. He is also a
vampire. He is
originally from Italy,
living during the
Renaissance.
Antagonist
The antagonist in this story
wasn’t revealed until the
very end of the book. When
you find out who he is, the
solution to the main problem
is solved.
Throughout the book, several
people have been hurt or even
killed, and their bodies drained of
blood. All of this has happened
since Stefan Salvatore showed up
in town.
Katherine von Swartzchild:
Stefan was in love with her back in the
1500s, she was the one to turn him
and his brother Damon into Vampires.
She looks exactly like Elena.
Bonnie & Meredith:
They were Elena’s best friends. Bonnie
had red hair, while Meredith had dark
hair.
Critics:
The critics say that the series is kind of boring
and nothing special.

This book was okay. It wasn’t my
favorite and I wouldn’t suggest it to
anyone else. It was slow for the most
part, there weren’t any major events
that happened. This book was split
into two parts, but I only read the first
book.(They are not together in one
book.) I think that if the two were put
together it probably would have been
better.
