Lesson 7.2
- Objective: Students will explain how World War II began.
Vocabulary
 Third Reich - the name given by the Nazis to their government in
Germany. Reich means empire in German.
 Anschluss - a political or economic union, esp the annexation of
Austria by Nazi Germany (1938)
 Appeasement – giving a person what they want hoping they will leave
you alone
 Maginot Line - a line of fortifications built by France to defend its border
with Germany prior to World War II; it proved ineffective against the
German invasion
Hitler’s First Moves
 1936 – Hitler sends soldiers into the Rhineland
 March 1938 – Hitler annexes Austria – known as Anschluss
 Sept. 1938 – Hitler is given Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia.
 Hitler’s Main Goal: He wants to create an empire/country of a
pure German race and have a 1,000 year reign of the Third
Reich.

 Peace conference among the major powers of Europe in Sept.
1938.

 Prime Minister of Great Britain
 “There will be peace in our time” – Wants peace at all costs
 He decides to appease Germany

Hitler’s First Moves
 March, 1939 – Hitler invades all of Czechoslovakia
 Invasion of Poland
 March 31st, 1939 - France and G.B. promise to defend
Poland. Hitler did not believe them.
 September 1st, 1939 - Hitler invades Poland
 September 3rd, G.B. and France declare war on Germany
Germany’s Quick Victories
 Germany takes over Poland in less than a month
 Germany then invades the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg in less
than a month.
 By June 22nd, 1940, Germany had invaded all of France
 Hitler now controls all of central Europe
 How did this happen?
 Germany uses blitzkrieg – brand new form of warfare
 France and Great Britain lacked enthusiasm for the war and felt safe behind
Maginot Line.
