USING EXPONENTS TO
REPRESENT POWERS OF 10
MINI NOTES
USING EXPONENTS TO REPRESENT POWERS
OF 10
• Key Words: exponent, base, factor, power of
10, standard form
• An exponent tells the number of times the
base is used as a factor.
• Example:
10³ 10 x 10 x 10
Read as “10 to the third power ”

• A power is the value of an exponent in an expression.
When the base is 10, the number is called a power of
10.
• There is a pattern to the number of zeros in powers of
ten. In the table above, the exponent represents the
number of zeros in the standard form of the number.
Each digit of a number in standard form is in a place
value. Each time the exponent increase by 1, the
number of zeros increases by 1.
SAMPLE:
COREY HAS THE NUMBER 100,000. HOW CAN HE EXPRESS IT
AS A POWER OF 10?
• Step 1: Count the number of zeros in the
number. There are 5 zeros.
• Step 2: Write the base: 10
• Step 3: There are 5 zeros. Use 5 as the
exponent: 10⁵
SAMPLE:
COREY ALSO HAS THE EXPRESSION
10 X 10 X 10 X 10 X 10 X 10 X 10 X 10 . HOW CAN HE EXPRESS IT AS A
POWER OF 10?
• Step 1: Count the number of times 10 is used as a
factor. It is used 8 times.
• Step 2: write the base: 10
• Step 3: Ten is a factor 8 times. Use 8 as the
exponent: 10⁸
• Step 4: Read the number as, “ten to the eighth
power” or “ten to the power of eight.”
