Seychelles Special Plants There are about 850 species of flowering plants in Seychelles, of which, 250 species are indigenous including 75 endemic species (meaning they are found only in Seychelles, nowhere else). The rest are introduced species. Many introduced species have become invasive and put many endemic species in danger. Conservation action is needed to save these special endemic plants. This poster presents some endemic species that are only found in Seychelles. Male Female Coco de Mer Lodoicea maldivica is the most famous plant of Seychelles, which has the biggest nuts in the plant kingdom. The biggest nut can weigh up to 20 kg. Male and female flowers grow on separate trees. It has huge, fan-like, rigid leaves. Latannyen Fey Phoenicophorium borsigianum has very large leaves with open tips. Bilenbi Maron Colea seychellarum is a small tree of about 8-10m high, inflorescence arises directly from the tree trunk. Fruits are juicy look like sausage. Bwa Zoliker Pittosporum senacia wrightii is a medicinal plan, growing in open woodland rocky areas from 200-500m. Local people use the leaves to treat stomach problems. Kapisen Northea hornei is fairly common, can be found at mountain tops. The tree can grow up to 20m. © Dao Nguyen Lozey maron Begonia sechellensis is a herb, not very common, and can be found moist forests above 500m. This poster has been produced as part of the Public Education and Advocacy Programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)/World Bank funded project “Improving Management of NGO and Privately Owned Nature Reserves and High Biodiversity Islands in Seychelles”. This project is a partnership between Nature Seychelles and Cousine Island Ltd. Designed by Dao Nguyen.
