PROSTATE CANCER UK Helping more men survive prostate cancer and enjoy a better quality of life UK OFFICIAL STATISTICS MARCH 2013 FOR PROSTATE CANCER Headline stats: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men Every hour one man dies from prostate cancer Over 40,000 men are diagnosed with the cancer every year More than 10,000 men die every year from prostate cancer It is estimated that by the year 2030, prostate cancer will be the most common cancer of all but like all cancers it affects the whole family already Supporting stats: 111 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day One in eight men will get the cancer Over 250,000 men are living with or after the cancer in the UK Two out of three adults don’t know what the gland does Who is at a higher risk: Men over 50 African Caribbean men – three times as likely as white men of the same age – and to have it perhaps younger If it’s in the family men are 2.5 time more likely to develop prostate cancer All men falling into these categories should be checked! Note: Men from Asian / Eastern countries have a low incidence of the cancer but on moving to western countries gradually move to European incidence levels Symptoms: None – but it can still be present and only found by testing- as with me at a well man’s clinic Urinary problems – a man should check but can be caused by other issues Persistent back ache – again can be due to many reasons but men must be checked Good news: Although not conclusive a simple blood test can be indicative. Like most serious cancers, if caught early treatments can work EG I was diagnosed in 1998 and am still here! Largely as a result of the charity, both awareness and research into the cancer is increasing – although still less than other serious cancers Prostate Cancer UK is here to help–0800 074 8383 www.prostatecanceruk.org Trevor Walker Prostate Cancer UK Volunteer AWARENESS IS VITAL!
