NOUN TYPES Abstract Nouns- names an idea, feeling, quality or characteristic EX: love, fun, freedom, self-esteem Concrete Nouns- names a person, place thing or idea that can be perceived by more than one of the five seneses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell) EX: photograph, music, sandpaper The Role of a Noun in the Sentence While we have talked about “classifications” of nouns (common, proper, collective, etc.) we also need to talk about a nouns FUNCTION in the sentence. -Function means how a noun can be used in the sentence The Role of a Noun in the Sentence A NOUN can be any of the following “pieces” of a sentence: Subject- The person, place, thing, or idea a whole sentence is about. Direct Object- The person, place, thing or idea that receives the action from the verb (an action verb) Object of the Preposition- The person, place, thing, or idea that comes at the end of a prepositional phrase Predicate Noun (nominative)- A word that is found in the “predicate” portion of the sentence and renames the noun. SUBJECT Subject- The person, place, thing, or idea a whole sentence is about. Trey plays baseball. (the whole sentence is about Trey.) DIRECT OBJECT Direct Object- The person, place, thing or idea that receives the action from the verb (an action verb) Trey throws the baseball (what is receiving the action from the verb? What is Trey throwing _________?) OBJECT Object of the Preposition- The person, place, thing, or idea that comes at the end of a prepositional phrase EX 1: Trey throws the baseball to Jason. (The noun that comes after the preposition to.) EX 2: The dog stands on its house. (The noun house comes after the preposition on) PREDICATE NOUN Predicate Noun (nominative)- A word that is found in the “predicate” portion of the sentence and renames the subject. Mrs. Hoag is a teacher. (Pink writing is predicate; teacher is a noun that renames the subject.) GROUP WORK 1.) Get out one sheet of paper (each person needs a sheet of paper). Head your paper Noun Group Work, and put your name in the top right hand corner, as well as the date and the period you are in. 2.) Read the first section of your handout which covers common and proper nouns. 3.) Put a heading for common and proper on your paper, then number 1-4, skipping a line between each number GROUP WORK 4.) Now, look at number one and write down ALL the common & proper nouns in that sentence leaving a space so that you can write whether it is common or proper. EX: ball-common, Meg-proper 5.)
