What In the world is the difference? In North America we operate on 110/125 volt Alternating Current (AC). However, most of the world has 220/250 volt AC, which is twice the voltage we use here. This means that when appliances made for use in North America (110/125V) are plugged into a foreign (220/250V) outlet, the motor goes twice as fast as it was designed to, damaging or destroying the appliance. In order to use a North American appliance abroad, it is necessary to convert (or step-down) the 220/250 volt electricity to 110/125 volts with either a converter or transformer. Dual Voltage Appliances An increasing number of appliances are dual voltage (110/250V). Dual voltage appliances can be used in countries with either 110/125V or 220/250V AC currents. You do not need to use a converter or transformer. You may still need an adapter plug to plug the appliance into the wall outlet. To determine if your appliance is dual voltage, look for a switch or a label/rating plate usually located on the back of the appliance that reads "100-240V". If there is a switch, always select the proper voltage setting before plugging the appliance into the electrical outlet. Some appliances switch voltage automatically; please consult your owner's manual. Voltage Conversion for Single Voltage (110/125V) Appliances Step-down converters and transformers step down 220/250 foreign voltage to 110/125V domestic voltage. Step-up converters and transformers do just the opposite. They step up North American 110/125 volt current to 220/250 volts, so foreign appliances can be used in 110/125 volt countries (USA/Canada). Battery Chargers and USB Power Adapters Many camcorder battery chargers and laptop battery chargers are dual voltage and can be used with just an adapter plug (for wall outlet). Please see “Dual Voltage Appliances” section above for help on how to determine if your battery charger is dual voltage. If it’s not dual voltage, we recommend you use a transformer. If your battery charger is not dual voltage and is less than 25 watts, you may also use a converter equipped with a low wattage setting. USB Power Adapters are dual voltage and only need to be used with an adapter plug. The type of conversion device travelers will need depends on the type of appliance and the wattage of the appliance being taken overseas. There are two distinct types of appliances: Electric and Electronic. Converters are mostly for electric appliances with simple heating devices and/or universal motor products such as garment steamers, irons, etc. Converters should be used only for short periods of time with products over 25 watts (approximately 30 minutes). Converters can be used with electronic circuitry appliances rated 0-25 watts if the converter is equipped with a low wattage setting. NOTE: Converters should not be used with power tools or equipment containing electronic circuitry, such as computers, TVs, stereos, or with hair care products equipped with an ALCI ground interrupter switch and reset button, or curling irons, and flat irons (hair straighteners) over 25 watts. Contact the manufacturer of your appliance if you are unsure if electronic circuitry is being used. Travel Smart® by Conair® suggests using one of our dual voltage hair care products, which only need to be used with an adapter plug. Transformers are for electronic appliances with electronic circuitry (computer chips or integrated circuits) such as computers, CD players, fax machines, answering machines, TVs, and power tools. These types of appliances and power tools require extra performance and allow for longer, continued operation. Wattage The wattage of the appliance being used determines which Travel Smart converter or transformer should be used. Always be sure to check the wattage of your appliances before using any voltage converter or transformer. The wattage of the appliance determines which converter/transformer is necessary. You will find the wattage information on the product's rating plate. If the wattage is not indicated, simply multiply the Voltage by the Amperage to determine the wattage: Volts x Amps = Watts (i.e.: 120V x 6A = 720 Watts). We strongly recommend using a converter and transformer that is rated at least 10% higher than the wattage of the appliance for the additional safety of your appliance. For example, if the appliance is rated 250 watts, we suggest using the Travel Smart 300 Watt Transformer. Please see the Telephone Adapter Plugs section in this brochure for information on plugging in your computer’s modem. Going Around With Cycles 110/125 volt electricity is generated at 60 Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. Foreign 220/250 volt electricity is generated at 50 Hz (Cycles) Alternating Current. The difference in cycles may cause the motor in a 60 Hz. U.S. appliance to operate more slowly when used on 50 Hz. foreign electricity. It will cause clocks and timing circuits using Alternating Current as a timing base to keep incorrect time. NOTE: Most modern electronic equipment including battery chargers, computers, printers, VCRs, etc. will not be affected by the difference in cycles as these products internally adjust for cycle differences. Transformers and converters will operate most products which run either on 50 or 60 Hz, however, transformers and converters do not convert cycles. Products which are solely dependent on 60 Hz for speed control (clocks, turntables, etc.) will run slower operating on 50 Hz. Please check with the appliance manufacturer for proper use. Outlets Electrical wall outlets in North America are also a different shape/ arrangement than outlets found in most other countries. You may need an adapter plug in order to allow your converter, transformer, or dual voltage appliance to fit into a foreign wall outlet. Adapter plugs only allow you to plug your appliance into a foreign electrical wall outlet and DO NOT CONVERT VOLTAGE. Telephone Adapter Plugs When using any kind of modem overseas, there are four issues to consider: The physical connection between the modem and the telephone line, the potential existence of a digital telephone system, line noise that could interfere with the modem's signals, and a dial tone that may not be recognized by the modem. The physical connection between the modem and the telephone line is the easiest problem to solve. While the most common telephone jack is the North American RJ11, there are 40 other kinds of outlets. You may need a telephone adapter plug to make the connection between the RJ11 jack on the end of your modem's telephone line to the telephone jack of the country you will be in. Digital telephone systems Some modems communicate using analog or sound signals while some telephone systems use digital signal processing. Sometimes there is a special data port on the telephone; be sure to check that you are plugging into an analog port. Plugging into a digital system can damage your modem. Check with the computer manufacturer to see what you will need to plug into a digital system. Line noise is a problem that can occur in less modernized countries. In most cases, you are at the mercy of the telephone exchange, but there are a few tricks that might help reduce the interference. First, try connecting at lower modem speeds. If you usually work at 14,400 bds., try reducing to 9,600 bds. or even 2,400 bds. Or, you can try working very late at night when there are fewer people using the network. If the dial tone in the country you are visiting is not recognized by your modem, you will probably need to adjust the communication program that your modem uses.
