Pepperoni Pizza Project
Goal: Identify the organic compounds found in a piece of pepperoni pizza and describe how the digestive
system breaks down the pizza into these usable organic compounds.
Learning Target 1: Understand the role of organic compounds in providing matter and energy to living things and how
to test matter for the presence of organic compounds.
Part A: (11 pts)
1. Predict which organic compounds would be found in pepperoni pizza and describe the primary
function(s) of that organic molecule. (6 pts)

Describe how you would test pepperoni pizza for lipids and the expected result: (2 pts)
Learning Target 2: Understand the role the digestive system plays in providing the body with matter and energy.
Part B: (29 pts)
Now that you’ve identified the organic compounds that would be present in pepperoni pizza it is time to
describe its journey though the human digestive system! Using both pictures and words you will create a
poster that describes the pepperoni pizza’s journey through the digestive system, starting at the mouth and
ending at the anus. Your poster should highlight the main parts of the digestive system and how they are
able to break down the pepperoni pizza into organic compounds that can be used by the body.
You will need to create a labeled drawing of the digestive system with captions that describe what is
happening to the pepperoni pizza at each part along the way. Remember to use color with a purpose!
Your Digestive System Reading and Interactive Reading Guide (pgs. 36-37) are a good place to start.
Some of the highlights that you will want to include and describe (in correct order) are:
Mouth
Chyme
Teeth
Saliva
Peristalsis
Feces
Amylase
Large Intestine
Bolus
Rectum
Esophagus
Anus
HCl
Liver
Lipids
Villi
Pepsin
Capillaries
Gall Bladder
Stomach
Common Bile Duct/Bile
Pancreas
Water
Proteins
Carbohydrates
3 Parts of the Small Intestine (duodenum, jejunum, ileum)
