Warm-up TOC 17 How Heat Travels 1/22 18 Storm Notes 1/22 19 Skills Lab Hurricane Tracking 1/22 20 Tracking a Hurricane 1/22 Key Concepts: - What are the main kinds of storms, and how do they form? - What measures can you take to ensure safety in a storm? Can You Make a Tornado? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPIKIS_rWUQ Fulgurites are natural hollow glass tubes formed in quartz, sand, silica, or soil by lightning strikes. They are formed when lightning with a temperature of at least 1,800 °C (3,270 °F) instantaneously melts silica on a conductive surface and fuses grains together; the fulgurite tube is the cooled product. This process occurs over a period of around one second and leaves evidence of the lightning path and its dispersion over the surface. http://we-are-star-stuff.tumblr.com/post/35635727164/fulgurites-are-natural-hollow-glass-tubes-formed Fulgurites Fossil Lightening Storm a violent disturbance in the atmosphere http://missbinnyc.blogspot.com/2010/07/storm-clouds.html http://www.wunderground.com/wximage/slywy/91?gallery=VIPPICT Storms result from: Sudden change in air pressure Causing rapid air movement http://www.4physics.com/phy_demo/mirage/barometer.htm Click link What observations have you made before a thunderstorm hits? Thunderstorms - small storm - heavy precipitation - thunder - lightening Thunderstorms form in a large cumulonimbus clouds, also known as thunderheads. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kapTREk0gXg Explanation of thunderstorm forming How thunderstorms form – video, no sound, but contains descriptions Song Parody on Storms Thunderstorm Parody Song http://www.eo.ucar.edu/kids/dangerwx/tstorm6.htm Click to next slide When you see the lightening flash, start counting the seconds. 10 1 Mississippi seconds 2 Mississippi equals 3 Mississippi about a mile away Etc. Until you hear the thunder Record the number of seconds Click to next slide Formation of Lightening Lightening and Thunder Lightening – a sudden spark or electrical discharge Thunder – a result of the air being super heated and then cooling rapidly, resulting in an explosive sound. Why is lightening seen before the sound of thunder is heard? Anatomy of Lightening What are the components of lightening? How is a lightening bolt formed? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLWIBrweSU8 Thunderstorm Damage Flooding Shatter tree trunks Start fires Humans/animals struck by lightening - unconsciousness - serious burns - heart failure Thunderstorm Safety * Indoors is the safest place - avoid touching anything that conducts electricity telephones, electrical appliances, & plumbing fixtures * Usually safe in a car - avoid touching metal in car * Caught outside, find a low area, and crouch down - avoid trees and water When caught outside with no safe place to go, you want to crouch down and curl up as small as you can, poised on the balls of your feet. - A rapidly spinning, funnel-shaped cloud, forming from a storm cloud - One of the most destructive types of storms 2 minute tornado video footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6JL1W9wZHg Fun Tornado Facts • The most powerful Tornadoes occur in the United States. •A typical tornado only lasts for a few minutes. •Every tornado has its own color, sound and shape. •You need to step on the pedal of a car pass 70 miles per hour to outrun the fastest tornadoes. •The chances that a tornado is a F5, the highest classification for a tornado on the F-scale, is less than 0.1% •Tornadoes have been reported in every state in the US and also in every season. •A Tornado can occur at any time, but most often between 3pm and 9pm. http://tornado-facts.com/ How Tornadoes Form Typically form from cumulonimbus clouds Usually during the spring or summer Often during the afternoon Tornado Alley http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/environment/envir onment-natural-disasters/tornadoes/tornadoes-101/ Tornado Damage Strong winds Flying debris Low pressure inside tornado How are Tornadoes Measured? http://enloehs.wcpss.net/projects/Weather/fujita.gif http://www.siamget.com/sites/siamget.com/files/imagepicker/5/fujita-scale3.jpg Tornado Safety http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/spotter_reference/spotter_slideshow/slide9.gif http://apps.startribune.com/blogs/user_images/safety_tips_tornado-600x450_1.jpg Hurricanes Up to 600 miles across Winds 74 miles or higher Form in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans Usually last a week or so Move east to west at 10 – 20 mph http://www.weatherwizkids.com/weather-hurricane.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXcCL2P2BmM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOw6ONcKk4g - The easterly trade winds bring it towards the Caribbean Islands and the southeastern United States http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPmDg5gEXHA Storm surge, High Winds, & Flooding, Washing away beaches Destroying buildings Eroding coastline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIl_qOkUc0o http://www.suu.edu/faculty/colberg/Hazards/Hurricanes_Noreasters/Hurricanes_Noreasters.html http://www.suu.edu/faculty/colberg/Hazards/Hurricanes_Noreasters/Hurricanes_Anim_1. html http://www.lifebridgeblogs.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/emergencypreparedness-checklist-300x198.jpg http://empirestatetribune.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/hurrican safety.jpg Northern hemisphere during the winter precipitation comes down as snow. Lake effect snows occur when a mass of sufficiently cold air moves over a body of warmer water, creating an unstable temperature profile in the atmosphere. As a result, clouds build over the lake and eventually develop into snow showers and squalls as they move downwind. The intensity of lake effect snow is increased when higher elevations downwind of the lake force the cold, snowproducing air to rise even further. http://newswatch.nationalgeographic.com/files/2012/1 2/605_010402lakesnow2-590x513.gif Heavy snow, ice storms and extreme cold can cause severe property damage and also put human and animal lives at risk. Accurate predicting of winter storms can help people prepare by making sure they have adequate fuel, food and other supplies on hand, but an unexpected change in wind direction can result in major snow accumulation in a localized region. In New York, this is often referred to as lake-effect snow because it generally involves geographic areas near Lake Erie or Lake Ontario. Terms to know: Winter Storm Outlook - storm conditions are possible in the next 2-5 days. Winter Storm Watch - storm conditions are possible within the next 36-48 hours. Winter Weather Advisory - weather conditions may be hazardous. Winter Storm Warning - severe winter conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. http://emergencypreparedness.cce.cornell.edu/disasters/pages/winterstorms.aspx Refer to handout August 30th
