10/31/2016 Section 1 Identifies and defines the five components of fitness in isolation. Understanding the five health‐related components of fitness. Cardiovascular Endurance (level 2.0) Muscular Endurance (level 2.0) Definition: The ability of the heart, lungs, and vascular system to function efficiently to deliver oxygenated blood to your muscles so you can continue to keep your body moving. Definition: The ability to contract the muscles many times without fatigue or to hold one muscle contraction for a long period of time. Assignment Completed: Muscle Fitness Bookwork Assignment Completed: Heart Rate Lab Muscular Strength (level 2.0) Flexibility (level 2.0) Definition: The amount of force that a muscle can produce in one single maximal effort. Definition: Ability to move the joints through a full range of motion. Requires elastic muscles. Assignment Completed: Assignment Completed: Muscle Fitness Bookwork Flexibility Bookwork 1 10/31/2016 Body Composition (level 2.0) Definition: The make‐up of the body’s tissues, including muscle, bone and body fat and the ratios between them. Assignment Completed: Body Mass Index (BMI) Lab Section 2 Relates the five components of fitness to overall health and performance in a variety of activities Question: List two health benefits for each of the five components of fitness. Benefits listed may not be repeated for another component. (No duplicates) . Cardiovascular Endurance (level 3.0) Muscular Strength & Endurance (level 3.0) HEALTH Benefits: HEALTH Benefits: Lower risk of heart disease • Injury Prevention Reduced Risks of type 2 diabetes • Maintain good posture Lower Blood pressure • Stronger ligaments and tendons Body is able to respond to physical challenges Reduce effort for everyday tasks Increased bone density Increased energy for work and play Increased feeling of well‐being Improved self‐esteem Increased muscle tone and endurance • Improved Body Composition • Increase in muscle mass • Increase in metabolism • Enhanced Self‐Image • Confidence • Self‐Esteem • Increased Bone Health Easier weight control Improved sleep Flexibility (level 3.0) Health Benefits: ‐ Improved joint health ‐ Prevention of low‐back pain and injuries Other potential benefits: • Temporary reduction of post‐ exercise muscle soreness, known as delayed‐onset muscle soreness (DOMS) • Relief of aches and pains and muscle cramps • Improved body position and strength for sports • Maintenance of good posture and balance • Aids in Relaxation Body Composition (Level 3.0) Health Benefits: Increase energy and endurance. Promote healthy blood pressure. Improve quality of sleep. Relieve some strain placed on your knees, hips, and lower back which can lead to reduced pain. Improve mood and self confidence. Improve blood circulation in all parts of the body, thereby reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Reduce respiratory infections and breathlessness, and improve lung function. 2 10/31/2016 Section 3 Select a sport or physical activity and describe ways in which each of the five components of health related fitness is relevant. Make sure to include the definition in your answer! Components of Fitness (level 4.0) 1. Select a sport or physical activity and describe the ways in which each of the five components of health related fitness are relevant. Example Answer: 2. Make sure to include the definition for each of the components in your examples! Cardiovascular Endurance (4.0) Muscular Endurance (4.0) Floor Hockey Example Indoor Soccer Example Floor Hockey Example Indoor Soccer Example In floor hockey you need to be able to run around all over the court for an extended period of time. In order to do that, your heart, lungs, and vascular system must function efficiently to deliver oxygenated blood your muscles so you can continue to keep your body moving. In indoor soccer you need to be able to run around all over the field for an extended period of time. In order to do that, your heart, lungs, and vascular system must function efficiently to deliver oxygenated blood your muscles so you can continue to keep your body moving. In floor hockey you need to be able to run around the court and change directions frequently. In order to do that, your leg muscles must be able to contract over and over again without becoming fatigued. In indoor soccer you have to kick the ball frequently. In order to do that, your leg muscles must be able to contract over and over again without becoming fatigued. Muscular Strength (4.0) Flexibility (4.0) Floor Hockey Example Indoor Soccer Example Floor Hockey Example Indoor Soccer Example In floor hockey you want to be able to hit a hard slap shot past the goalie to score. In order to do that your upper body muscles must be able to produce a lot of force in one single maximal effort. In soccer you want to be able to shoot the ball hard past the keeper. In order to do that your leg muscles must be able to produce a lot of force in one single maximal effort. In floor hockey you need to be able to make powerful slap shots. In order to do that your muscles in the upper body must be able to stretch enough to allow the joints to go through a full range of motion. That way you can bring the stick back far enough. In soccer you must be able to make long passes across the field. In order to do that your muscles in the leg must be able to stretch enough to allow the joints to go through a full range of motion. That way you can bring the leg back far enough to generate power on your pass. 3 10/31/2016 Body Composition (4.0) Floor Hockey Example Indoor Soccer Example If you have a the proper ratios of fat bone and muscle, playing floor hockey will be easier for you to do. The game requires a lot of running and changing directions which would be more difficult if you don’t have a healthy body composition. If you have a the proper ratios of fat bone and muscle, playing indoor soccer will be easier for you to do. The game requires a lot of running and changing directions which would be more difficult if you don’t have a healthy body composition. 4
