In June, Atkins/Waterman was appointed as the sole
Tier 1 supplier to the West Midlands Highway Alliance
framework where we will work together for the next four
years in a strategic partnership to deliver a broad range
of municipal, highways and engineering consultancy
services across the region. This new commission enables
Waterman Aspen, our civil engineering secondment
business, to continue to expand its range
of services and clients.
In July, our design team on the 1 million (gross) sq ft
new headquarters for Google UK Ltd at Kings Cross,
London was relocated to site for the construction phase.
In Australia, we are working on many projects in the
healthcare and judicial sectors and following the recent
Federal elections we look forward to these projects
proceeding to construction.
We attended the British Council of Shopping Centres
conference last month and it is clear from our discussions
that there is increasing confidence in the future of
retailing. In April this year the 1 million sq ft Trinity
Leeds shopping centre designed by Waterman for Land
Securities was opened to the public. Waterman teams
are currently working on many other shopping centres
throughout the UK for many of our clients. We are
assisting Westfield and Hammerson with their planning
application for the 2 million sq ft Whitgift Centre in
Croydon. Over the last twelve months we have been
involved in advising banks and investors on numerous
retail development transactions.

UK: Waterman are pleased to be working for Google in
the development of their new London headquarters at
Kings Cross to an AHMM concept design. Waterman
have been involved since concept design stage and are
currently developing the detailed design and package
procurement information. The project, which will be
ground-breaking in many ways, has now been submitted
for planning.
UK: Waterman has recently taken part in
the creation of a new augmented reality app
‘Engineering Trail’, which is being developed
as part of the Association for Consultancy and
Engineering’s (ACE) centenary celebrations.

In addition, Waterman have recently completed the design
on the same site of an enabling works package on behalf
of Argent and the Kings Cross Partnership. The design
provides a suspended access road through the 300m
long site from the north into Kings Cross Station, unlocking
the main site for Google. Construction works
are currently underway.

Waterman are also currently working on two other new
developments on the Kings Cross Central regeneration
site which is creating a new vibrant destination for London.
The ACE Engineering Trail at Kings Cross will
be a first. There are rivers, canals, railway lines,
tube lines, a university and businesses - all
competing for space at Kings Cross. What better
place to choose?
UK: Waterman’s David Fung collected a BCSA Structural Steelwork Design Award at a
ceremony held in Madame Tussauds, London.
Further details on the Google development will follow in a
later issue of Waterman Times.
For the AirW1 redevelopment over 1,000t of existing steelwork, including massive plate
girders, was carefully assessed and then refurbished, adapted or enhanced behind the
Edwardian façade.
Former Triangle Volvo
site receives green light
UK: London Borough of Hackney has granted planning permission
for the redevelopment of the former Triangle Volvo site in Stamford
Hill (N16).
AIHA Housing Association’s newly approved £20m development
will see the provision of 65 new flats including 36 affordable
housing units, 760m² of retail space and a state of the art 1,760m²
conference facility.
The Judges cited: ‘‘This is an exemplar for imaginative incorporation of existing steelwork in a
striking modern office/retail/residential development.’’
David Shaw, Head of Regent Street Portfolio at The Crown Estate also commented:
“Waterman have been a key member of the Regent Street Quadrant 3 team from the
beginning. The BCSA Structural Steelwork Award is very well deserved as the structural
solution to the project and its execution was a crucial part of our success.”
The AirW1 project has received several awards since its completion in 2012 and these
include; British Construction Industry Award for Best Practice, New London Awards - Office
Category and Building Magazine’s Project of the Year 2012.
The project is considered unique in that it exceeds the standard
requirement for affordable housing, which will predominantly consist
of large family units to meet the needs of the local community. All
homes have been designed to achieve London Housing Design
Guide Standards or BREAM ‘Very Good’.

Using a platform developed by N0tice, part of
the Guardian group of companies, the app will
use augmented reality to show how engineers
help to create an environment in which we all
want to live. The ACE commissioned fifteen
short films to be produced around Kings Cross
to illustrate different aspects of engineering and
showcase the difficult and pioneering solutions
that have been used to overcome the challenges
of a particular site.

The app, which was launched on the 10th
September is accessible on smartphones
around the Kings Cross area and via the
computer in the classroom, the office or
at home.
Following two years of consultation with the Local Planning Authority,
the six-storey mixed-use scheme was unanimously approved by
Hackney council’s planning.
Waterman was involved in gaining early agreement for the proposed
parking numbers that was above the initial levels requested by the
planning authority who sought to achieve a car free development.
Waterman successfully argued that the higher levels of car parking
were appropriate in this instance due to car ownership levels and the
lack of controlled parking zones in the area. Waterman also prepared
the travel plan as part of the overall application.
The purpose of this innovative app is to promote
engineering and to enthuse and excite young
people to consider engineering and consultancy
as a career.

Sustainability Award
UK: Waterman are pleased to announce that 6 Bevis Marks, London has triumphed in the
Sustainability Category at the Ground Engineering Awards 2013.
The awards were presented on the 25th April at the prestigious Grosvenor House Hotel on
London’s Park Lane, which had an audience of over 450 leaders in geotechnical engineering
consultancy and contracting.
Waterman are providing multidisciplinary design services to this pioneering project and
have been working closely with Cementation Skanska to adopt an innovative approach to
pile reuse.
Monaghan multi-user
Education Campus
Ireland: Waterman Moylan has successfully delivered a full range of traffic, civil
and structural engineering services to the new Monaghan multi-user Education
Campus in Ireland.
The £25m campus, located on the site of a vacated Army Barracks, primarily
comprises of a 400 pupil Primary School, a 600 pupil Secondary College, a 700
pupil Institute of Further Education and a 200 seat public theatre.
The natural falls across the sloping site required careful planning of the various
buildings to enable connectivity and accessibility throughout the grounds. Gabion
and reinforced earth slopes, split level buildings and extensive incorporation of
raised walkways were incorporated into the designs to provide suitable routes
across the landscaped campus for universal access.
The project is the first major devolved funding campus scheme completed for
the Irish education system and has been completed from initial Design Team
appointment and site masterplanning to handover in just 30 months.
Following completion of the Monaghan project, our education sector team in
Ireland remains busy on a number of other significant school projects throughout
the country.

6 Bevis Marks effectively retains over 50% of the original structural mass as a part of an
extensive sustainability agenda that will ultimately shorten the construction programme.
Rigorous testing and analysis allowed 27% of existing piles to carry more load than
previously experienced, up to a 40% increase. The reuse enables a 1,000t carbon saving
on installation alone. Overall, the new 16 storey development is 80% more efficient than the
building it replaces.

Better the Devil you Know?
UK: Back in April, Waterman took part in Green Sky Thinking Week; a London wide
programme for built environment professionals which highlights sustainable developments
and future plans across the capital. The annual event, organised by Open-City, offers an
independent arena to showcase and discuss best sustainable practice.
During a 5 day programme Waterman held a breakfast event at the Grange Hotel in
London, titled ‘Better the Devil you Know?’, which explored how recycling existing building
stock can potentially provide better returns on investment than new build, provide the
highest energy ratings and offer less disruption to existing communities.
The debate was chaired by Neil Lewis, MD of Waterman Building Services, who was
joined on the panel by industry professionals; David Ainsworth of CORE, Nick Ridout of
Fletcher Priest Architects and Waterman Directors, Craig Beresford, Neil Humphrey
and Mark Terndrup.
The overriding point made, and neatly encapsulating the discussion, was that a buildings
sustainability is very much dependant on its social and cultural relevance, however you
cannot generalise as each development is individual. No one retrofit or reconstruction is ever
the same, each must push the boundaries of design and sustainable innovation.

Construction Consultants framework.

The Crown Estate has commenced a £500m
programme of investment to enhance and refine
the properties of St James’s.
O
ver the last decade, Waterman has been
working with The Crown Estate to help them
deliver an award winning £1bn regeneration
of Regent Street.
Waterman have provided high quality structural
engineering services to the majority of The Crown
Estate’s projects; notably the two most successful
redevelopments in the portfolio: Block W8 (Apple Store)
completed in 2005 and AirW1 (Q3; former Regent
Palace Hotel) which was completed in 2012.
Waterman have an ongoing commitment to the Regent
Street portfolio and are currently providing structural
design services for Block W4 and Block W5 south, Q2
(Air Street) and Q4.
The Crown Estate has now commenced a £500m
programme of investment to enhance and refine the
properties in their other core central London portfolio,
St James’s. St James’s Gateway (1, Eagle Place) is the
first development in the St James’s Conservation Area,
for which Waterman provided structural engineering
services. The project was completed in July 2013.
Successively, Waterman has been appointed to deliver
structural consultancy for the Flagship St James’s
Market project. The development area, which lies
between Haymarket and Lower Regent Street, will be
regenerated to provide a vibrant pedestrianised ‘piazza’
surrounded by shops and cafés.
The first and current part of the project consists
of two blocks; Regent Street block and Haymarket
block fronting Lower Regent Street and
Haymarket respectively.
Visions by Make Architects restore the neglected site
of St James’s Market to its former glory and celebrates
its historic identity with the creation of a vibrant
new destination.
The character and quality of the area will be enriched
with a holistic design which integrates the new and
existing buildings with the public realm. The Regent
Street block will be redeveloped behind retained
façades; the Haymarket block will be replaced with a
high-quality, contemporary office and retail building
which sensitively echoes the quality, scale and materials
of the surrounding area.
The 350,000ft2 development will deliver a new
public square, offices and retail directly south of
Piccadilly Circus.
Waterman’s experienced engineers are tasked with
providing solutions to several constraints on the
site, which include; a LUL along Haymarket, with a
major Thames Water sewer running down St Alban’s
Street above the proposed service tunnel; Crossrail
safeguarding zones, which sit over the entire site and;
existing bank vaults below the new basement level
in the Regent Street block, containing a 22 tonne
steel door.
Works commenced on site with demolition in September
2013. Completion is anticipated in the first quarter
of 2016.

THE INTEGRATED HEALTH PROJECTS (IHP) PROCURE
21 TEAM RECENTLY COMPLETED THE CONSTRUCTION
AND SUCCESSFUL HAND OVER OF THE NEW PHASE
3 WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S FACILITY AT THE ROYAL
OLDHAM HOSPITAL.
Working on behalf of N G Bailey and in close
cooperation with VINCI Construction and the
project architects, IBI Taylor Young, Waterman
designed all of the mechanical and electrical
services installations within the new four
storey building.
The construction of the new women and
children's facility provides a modern
healthcare department incorporating a
paediatric theatre, two obstetric theatres,
delivery suites, post natal wards,
gynaecology assessment unit, paediatric
day case and wards, accident and emergency
observation unit, surgical triage, and a thirty
bed assessment unit. The new development
will mean that The Royal Oldham Hospital
will be one of three regional neonatal centres
which will provide the highest standard of
extensive care for the smallest and most
vulnerable babies.
These measures included the innovative use
of natural ventilation within the wards, fully
modelled to demonstrate peak summertime
temperature scenarios, with variable speed
boost extract systems to assist the natural
ventilation where necessary. Other measures
included energy efficient lighting and controls
as well as the use of waste energy from
the onsite incineration plant to provide the
primary heating and hot water services.
These measures combined with good low
energy design techniques contributed to an
overall 35% reduction in the building’s carbon
emissions. In addition to the low energy
design, the scheme was assessed under
the BREEAM Healthcare 2008 assessment
method and achieved an ‘Excellent’ rating.

In addition to the new 7,300m2 facilities,
the existing wards were partially
reconfigured and refurbished, with the
building services carried out by Waterman.
The £32m development is the largest
investment made by the Pennine Acute
Hospitals NHS Trust and follows on from
an earlier development on the site, which
was also successfully delivered by the
same IHP team. The earlier development
provided a £21m three storey new build,
housing a radiotherapy centre, operated
by the North West’s leading cancer
care hospital. Just as with the Phase 3
development, Waterman was employed by
N G Bailey to provide the full mechanical
and electrical design services.
The new development will mean that The Royal Oldham Hospital will be one of
three regional neonatal centres which will provide the highest standard of extensive
care for the smallest and most vulnerable babies.

Strategy, the scheme incorporated a
number of key energy saving measures to
drive down the energy consumption of the
building and improve the Trust’s overall
energy performance.

key Mid Town location within the City of London, with
major frontages to Shoe Lane, Little New Street
and New Street Square.
The curved noses contrast with the gently curving
eastern and western façades and hold the circus to the
south east and Athene Place, a public space, to the
north. The south east nose announces the presence of
New Street Square to those approaching from the city.

Circus and Holborn Circus. The area benefits from a rich
tapestry of streets, lanes and squares with a wide range

surrounding context, including views to the wider city,
and animation of the public realm with active frontages.
The massing was generated by the site’s pivotal position
within the local townscape and by the alignment of the
lateral assessment area of the Primrose Hill viewing
corridor to St Paul’s Cathedral.

Leicester Square. The contemporary roof design
is supported by a central core and new perimeter
stanchions with complete column-free office space
and spans of up to 12m providing very efficient
floor space to appropriate market standards.

structural engineering services, including a
technical assessment of the retained Portland stone
façade. Scheme design was signed off by the client
in June 2013 with detailed design progressing
through to January 2014.
On-site investigations were undertaken by our
engineers to expose the internal details of the
perimeter structure. This has been done in parallel
with an archive search in the files of the Automobile
Association and the London Metropolitan Archive.
The research is uncovering architectural plans and
photographs for the various phases of work which is
proving to be invaluable with respect to the scope and

majority of our secondees, this allows us to recruit staff who seek the security

The last 12 months has been the most stimulating since our inception 25 years

Henderson UK Retail Warehouse Fund has secured planning
permission for the regeneration of Central Retail Park, Great
Ancoats Street in Manchester.
The approved scheme will redevelop the retail park with a large
format food store acting as a new anchor. The site will also include
restaurants, smaller retail units, a small format cinema and associated
undercroft car parking. Approximately half of the existing non-food retail
warehousing space is to be retained on site and refurbished to a high
standard of appearance.
One of the key objectives of the scheme will be to provide an attractive
new pedestrian route through the middle of the site connecting new
residential developments to the north with the city centre. An important
aspect of the agreed highway package is the major safety benefit of
providing controlled pedestrian crossings on Great Ancoats Street and
Old Mill Street.

In June 2013 Atkins/Waterman was appointed as the sole Tier 1 supplier to
the West Midlands Highway Alliance (WMHA) framework where we will work
together over the next 4 years in a strategic partnership to deliver a broad range
of municipal, highways and engineering consultancy services across the region.
The Framework Agreement is led by Warwickshire County Council, Coventry City
Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and can be accessed by any
of the other 10 West Midlands local authorities who are members of the Alliance.
A key strength of the partnership between Waterman and Atkins was our track
record, capacity and capability in delivering similar consultancy contracts across
the UK local authority sector. The contract will give us the opportunity to double
West Midlands staff numbers within the next 6 months
Our ambition is to match the success we have in the East Midlands with the award
winning Midlands Highways Alliance Professional Services Partnership which we
are delivering with URS. The two contracts reinforce our position as the premier
supplier of seconded staff to local authorities and gives us the opportunity to
recruit confidently, knowing that we are able to offer those staff secure positions
with access to an unrivalled variety of experience.
These contracts and similar partnerships in the North West and throughout the
UK offer local authority clients the flexibility to engage resources to meet changing

JERSEY INTERNATIONAL
FINANCE CENTRE
The States of Jersey Development Company Limited
have appointed Waterman to provide multidisciplinary
services for the Jersey International Finance Centre.
Waterman has been appointed to provide environmental,
structural, mechanical & electrical, civil, transport, fire and
acoustic engineering services for the development.
The site was originally reclaimed from the sea and used
for landfill in the 1980s and is currently occupied as a car
park. However once the development is complete it will
boast six Grade ‘A’ commercial office buildings totalling
500,000ft2 of net internal space, major public realm
improvements and a subterranean 520 space public multistorey car park.
The Jersey International Finance Centre will be bounded
by Castle Street, The Esplanade and La Route De La
Liberation, with the historic sea wall to the north of the
site along the Esplanade. The sea wall will be retained
in the new development and, in places, exposed and
incorporated into the landscaping and public realm
improvements, providing a link to the history of the site.
Planning approval has been granted for building 4 of the
development and a planning application for building 1 was
submitted in July 2013, building 2 and the car park will
follow in the next few months.
All of the buildings will be designed to very high
environmental standards and are targeting a BREEAM
rating of ‘Excellent’.

Waterman were initially commissioned to undertake the
masterplan and feasibility study back in 2006, however
once completed, the project was delayed for 24 months
due to State Government budget pressures.
In late 2009 our original commission was extended to
prepare a feasibility study update and business case
submission. This same extension was then undertaken
in 2010 and again in 2011. Finally, in February 2013
Waterman were appointed to undertake the full project
design services and were instructed by the State
Government to commence schematic design.
Waterman will provide the mechanical, electrical, fire,
hydraulic and vertical transportation engineering design
services. The architectural and health planning services
are being provided by architectural firm Silver
Thomas Hanley.

The new Monash Children’s Hospital will be Australia’s
third largest purpose built paediatric Hospital. The
aim is to provide one coherent public identity for the
comprehensive paediatric services provided across
many of the client’s campuses into a new state-of-the-art
Children’s Hospital. This new 6-level 30,000m2 facility
will be built on the existing Monash Medical Centre site
and will integrate its tertiary, primary and secondary care
services for children.
The facility will include 96 inpatient beds, a state-wide
neuro-development unit, 64 bed NICU, 12 bay children’s
day oncology, expanded operating facilities for the
Hospital including 4 operating theatres, medical imaging
expansion, general paediatric outpatients comprising 27
consulting rooms, program administration academic unit
and satellite pharmacy.

A number of options were developed to provide key
linkages from the new Hospital back to the existing
facility. The current design proposes a tunnel link below
ground between the two buildings for food and supply
services and bridge links at Levels 2, 3 and 5 for patient
and staff transfers. The current planning has been set
around three central full height atria, which are intended
to provide daylight into the centre of the facility and
support intuitive wayfinding. The proposed design
increases the capacity of paediatric services at Monash
Medical Centre and will provide projected growth,
including flexibility and expansion.
The project is currently in the schematic design phase
and Waterman are currently undertaking viability
analysis on a number of key Ecologically Sustainable
Development (ESD) initiatives such as:

Facilities
Waterman are currently providing environmental and engineering
consultancy advice to Bristow Helicopters Ltd in support of new
helicopter Search and Rescue (SAR) facilities, located across
Great Britain. The Bristow Group has won a £1.6bn 10 year
contract to take over the UK's helicopter Search and Rescue
operations on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Bristow will replace RAF and Royal Navy Sea King helicopters
with Sikorsky S-92s and AgustaWestland AW189s. These
technologically advanced aircraft will be equipped with the
latest SAR technology allowing Bristow to deliver excellent SAR
coverage across the UK.
Under the new contract, 22 helicopters will operate from
10 locations around the UK. Seven of these locations (at
Newquay, Manston Kent, St Athan (South Wales), Caernarfon,
Humberside, Inverness and Prestwick) require new SAR bases
to be constructed on existing airport/airbase sites, whereas the
remaining three (Lee-on-Solent, Stornoway and Sumburgh) will
utilise existing facilities.
Waterman initially supported Bristow when tendering for the new
UK SAR contract by undertaking an initial appraisal of ground
contamination risk at the sites of the proposed new SAR facilities.

Following their successful tender and the award of the national
search and rescue helicopter contract in early 2013, we have been
providing a range of pre-planning assessments to support their
various planning applications, together with site investigations to
inform the building design.
Proposals for the new SAR facilities include a new aviation hangar
to provide housing and maintenance for two helicopters and
welfare accommodation for staff, car parking and an apron area.
Much of the pre-planning and ground investigation assessments
have been successfully completed and we have recently been
asked to provide BREEAM pre-assessments to help ensure that
the required planning and corporate targets can be achieved
within budget.
Bristow’s SAR operations will be rolled out in a phased manner
from 2015 and will be fully operational by summer 2017.

Under the 2008 EU Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC), targets to reduce key air
pollutants need to be met by 2015. Despite progress in recent years, several air
quality standards are still widely exceeded in the EU's most densely populated
areas. In particular, research has found that beginning in 2008, levels of nitrogen
dioxide (NO2), particulate matter and ozone, have risen in Europe, fuelling concerns
about overall air quality especially in urban ‘hot spots’.
In response, the European
Commission has designated the Year
2013 as the ‘Year of Air’ where current
air quality policy will be reviewed, with
a focus on finding ways to improve the
quality of the air we breathe.
IN CONTEXT, IT IS

ACCIDENTS COMBINED.
Janez Potočnik, the European
Commissioner for Environment, has
stated: “Citizens want us to act and we
will respond by reviewing our air policy
in 2013. They are asking for more measures in key sectors, and better information
on policy effectiveness. To meet these challenges we need to work together at all
policy levels – and follow up with action on the ground.”
Within the UK, 43 areas identified for poor ambient NO2 concentrations (known as Air
Quality Management Areas), will not comply with the EU limits by 2015. London will
not meet its legal limit until 2025 whilst other cities, including Birmingham, Leeds and
Glasgow, will not comply until 2020. In context, it is estimated air pollution from NO2
and particulate matter (as PM10) now kills as many people in Britain as obesity and
road accidents combined.
Our services on this project have focused on
the sites where new SAR bases are required
and have included:
• Noise assessments, specifically considering
the operational noise generated by the
helicopters at nearby sensitive receptors;
• Geo-environmental ground investigation;
• Unexploded buried ordnance;
• Flood risk assessments;
• Ecological appraisals;
• Landscape and visual assessments, including
photomontages;
• Ground penetrating radar and
topographical surveys;
• Heritage assessments (desk based and
fieldwork);
• Transportation advice; and
• BREEAM pre-assessments.
Following a legal challenge by ClientEarth, the UK Supreme Court ruled on 1st May
2013 that the UK was in breach of EU air quality limits and failing in its legal duty
to tackle air pollution. The UK Supreme Court has now referred the matter to the
Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The CJEU could decide to force the
government to submit plans that would see the UK meet legal air quality limits. The
European Commission environment spokesman Joseph Hennon said there was a
“strong chance” that the commission would take enforcement action against the UK.
Following this ruling the London Assembly has backed a motion calling for the Mayor
of London to develop plans for emergency measures to bring NO2 levels within the
legal limits in London.
Air Quality is an important constraint to consider within a development. The ‘Year
of Air’ may introduce tighter regulations and policy which may have an impact on
building design and site suitability.

implementation of air quality monitoring programmes; air quality impact assessments
(either as part of EIA or a standalone technical study) relating to traffic, industrial,

assessments; discharge of planning conditions; and provision of expert witness/
public inquiry evidence services.

deal with the condition and compete in events
like this for his chosen charity; Diabetes UK.
Daniel successfully completed his first half

Recent Awards
As part of the on-going public realm works within Coventry City
Centre, the in-house design and delivery team picked up two
prestigious awards at the recent Chartered Institution of Highways
and Transportation (CIHT) West Midlands Branch Awards Dinner.
RIBA Awards 2013
RIBA West Midlands Regional and National Award
St Albans Academy, Birmingham, UK
The City Centre Public Realm works won two high profile awards,
firstly the Innovation Award, which recognises innovative problem
solving within the highways and transportation industry and
encourages imaginative concepts and excellence. Furthermore, Chris
Young, West Midlands Area Manager at Waterman Aspen won the
coveted Young Professional of the Year Award for his leading role in
the design and delivery of the UK’s largest 20mph zone.
This highly innovative zone required extended liaison with the
Department for Transport and is significantly different to any other in
the country in that vehicle speeds have been designed through the
use of innovative new road layouts rather than using traditional traffic
calming features.

wins BCO Award
These two awards recognise the fantastic achievements made by
the Public Realm Team at Coventry City Council and further enhance
Waterman Aspen’s reputation to the client, both regionally and
nationally. The team are also up for a number of other awards in
forthcoming months including nominations at the National
CIHT Awards.
Network Rail’s National Centre in Milton Keynes - The Quadrant:MK has won the
British Council for Offices’ (BCO) Regional Award for Best Corporate Workplace
and will be entered for the BCO’s Nationwide Awards in the latter part of 2013.
Quadrant:MK may initially appear like a conventional corporate workplace but this
is a building enlivened by an exceptional environmental approach. The 400,000ft2
complex houses 3,000 staff in a flexible building that consumes just 25% of the
energy and 30% of the water of a similar sized traditional office development and
maintains an EPC rating of 18. This is achieved by a passive design approach
that uses the building design, layout and orientation as the chief environmental
tool rather than the application of supplementary technologies. Naturally ventilated
atrium spaces provide fresh air intake and allow warm air to rise while the use
of local materials, water metering and extensive public transport facilities also
contribute to the building’s low carbon impact. Waterman were involved in
developing the many exposed structures assisting both with the passive cooling of
the building and in delivering the quality of space needed to win the award.
Acting as part of the delivery team including; GMW Architects, Mace and BAM
Construction, Waterman was responsible for providing the transport assessment,
framework travel plan, flood risk assessment, geotechnical and various ecological
studies. The civil, structural and services design encompassed a range of
innovative sustainability solutions that contributed to it being one of
the first buildings to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating under the 2009
assessment criteria.
In judging, the Quadrant:MK was considered a significant development that
despite the sheer scale of the project still displayed intricate attention to detail in
its completion. Described as a challenging and ambitious project it has allowed
Network Rail to consolidate a large number of its regional offices into a single
facility. The building design is future proof with sustainability at its heart.
The awards seek to define excellence in office space as well as provide public
recognition for top quality design and functionality and a benchmark for excellence
in workplaces.

The win comes as a great triumph for dRMM Architects
and all involved as this was a project challenged by
budgetary and procurement constraints. Initiated within
the Birmingham BSF programme, and complicated by its
eventual cancellation, the response demanded an economic
yet inspiring design. Waterman successfully delivered all
detailed building services design on behalf of Lend Lease.

Green Health Winner
The Royal Children’s Hospital has been awarded the title of Australia’s
Best Public Building for 2013. This follows on from also receiving the
prize for the Victorian Development of the Year at the Property Council
of Australia’s Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The Hospital, a public-private partnership (PPP), has won the John
Holland Award for Best Public Building at the 2013 Property Council of
Australia Innovation and Excellence Awards.
Waterman Melbourne was appointed by the Victorian Department of
Health as the technical adviser for the state government and to prepare
the technical brief and oversee the PPP consortium design on the new
Royal Children’s Hospital. The $1bn project is also the first Hospital
in Australia to achieve a five star sustainability rating from the Green
Building Council of Australia.
Waterman played a pivotal role in developing the building services
concepts to achieve a successful five star rating. Our work involved the
preparation of the technical brief, technical assessment of the bidders
submission, review and oversee of the successful bidders design, on
site construction assistance and review of the final commissioning
and handover.

Ocean Grove Award
A Waterman Sydney project has picked up the award for the Best
Retirement Living Development amongst stiff competition from 8 other
finalists across the country.
From shopping centres to schools and from Hospitals to heritagelisted offices, 107 finalists from around Australia recently battled it out
to be named as a 2013 Property Council of Australia Innovation and
Excellence Award winner at a gala event held at Star City in Sydney.
The Awards celebrate innovation and leading practice within Australia’s
property development and investment industries.
Waterman provided building services engineering for Ocean Grove
which is a new seniors living development in Dee Why. The project
was designed to provide a high level of amenity for the residents and
was rewarded for its innovative approach to seniors’ living.
