Shoebox Plant Cell Model
Biology I, 25 Point Bonus Opportunity
Instructor: Mrs. Adams-Smith
This bonus opportunity must be done as an individual; you may NOT work together:
Make a 3-dimensional Plant Cell Model using a standard shoe-box as the Cell Wall. The
shoebox lid must be used as well (continue reading to find out how you will use your lid).
Use pages 74-79 in your textbook for help.
-In addition to the shoebox, all organelles and structures must have shape and depth; all
organelles and structures must be 3-dimensional.
-You must use a variety of materials for the organelles. At least SEVEN different
materials must be used.
-You may NOT use any food at all; do NOT use food in any way. If food is used at all,
you will earn ZERO points for this bonus opp.
-You may NOT use Styrofoam at all. If you use any Styrofoam at all, you will earn
ZERO points for this bonus opp.
-Do Not use any fluid, gel or substance to represent the cytoplasm.
-You must use objects which demonstrate knowledge and understanding of cell structure.
-All parts listed below MUST be included.
-Each part must be identified on the KEY that you will construct to go with your
Shoebox Plant Cell; you MUST use the inside of the Shoebox lid to display your KEY.
This is to be done by number, name of structure, and name of material or object used to
represent each structure.
-You should be Creative, Artistic, Scientifically accurate given the nature of the
assignment, and very Neat; your model MUST be done with care, organization, and
neatness.
-Your model Must arrive complete and stay together (NOT fall apart or break due to
gravity)
-Your NAME MUST clearly be displayed on your Shoebox and on the lid.
-Plant Cell Parts: You MUST use the following numbering system in your required Key:
1. Cell Wall (you will be “on your way” with this, -once you have your Shoebox)
2. Cell membrane
3. Nucleus
4. Nuclear membrane/envelope
5. DNA (at least 6 strands)
6. Nucleolus
7. Chloroplast (at least two)
8. Mitochondrion (at least two)
9. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
10. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
11. Ribosomes (at least 15)
12. Golgi Apparatus (at least one)
13. Central Vacuole
14. Vesicle (at least three)
-Plant Cell Parts and Corresponding
Place on the Shoebox Plant Cell Key:
1 pt. each, 1-16 = 16 Points.
-Neatness and Organization = 9 Pts.
-Total Bonus Points Possible = 25
-The Biology Teacher reserves the right
to award up to 5 additional bonus
points for especially creative plant cells
which are also especially neat and well
organized.
