Heliocentric vs. Geocentric Astrology
• Heliocentric astrology has Sun as center of the chart.
– Measures planets in relationship to Sun.
– Earth is in chart instead of Sun.
• Geocentric astrology has Earth as center of the
chart.
– Measures planets in relationship to Earth.
– Measures planets along the Ecliptic, the Sun’s apparent
path around the Earth.
• Astronomers measure planets along the Earth’s
equator.
• Astrologers measure planets along the Ecliptic.
Tropical vs. Sideral Zodiac
• Tropical zodiac is moving zodiac.
– First day of spring – 0° Aries – moves backwards
through the heavens/stars/constellations.
– Moves 1° = 72 years.
– Moves 30° = sign of zodiac, ie Age of Pisces,
approximately 2167 years.
– Precession of the equinox = 26,000 years.
• Sideral zodiac is stationary zodiac.
– Signs match constellations, more or less.
• Tropical and sidereal zodiacs are currently 23°
apart.
Circles of the Zodiac
• A circle has no beginning or end, so astrologers
create one.
• Spring (or fall) equinox is natural starting point.
– Plane of equator and ecliptic are intersecting.
– Declination of Sun is 0° from equator.
• Tropic of Cancer = 23°27' above equator.
– Summer Solstice = first day of summer.
• Tropic of Capricorn = 23°27' below equator.
– Winter Solstice = first day of winter.

Declination
• Declination is a latitude measurement.
• Declination of planets are degrees above or
below celestial equator.
• 23° 27´ north or south of the equator are the
farthest limits that the Sun can travel.
• “Out of bounds” is when a planet moves beyond
23° 27´ north or south of the equator.
Declination
• Astrological conjunction aspects are measured in
longitude.
• Parallel is when two planets are at the same
declination north or south of the equator.
– Commonly interpreted as conjunctions.
• Anti-parallel is when two planets are equal
distance with one planet north and one planet
south of the equator.
– Commonly interpreted as oppositions.
Great Circles
• The five great circles are projected out into space
and known as celestial spheres.
• The Equator and Ecliptic are the same for
everyone.
• Equator – Earth’s equator evenly divided
between north and south poles.
• Ecliptic – Apparent path of Sun around the Earth.
Great Circles
• The five great circles are projected out into space
and known as celestial spheres.
• The Horizon, Meridan and Prime Vertical are
unique to each birth moment and place.
• Horizon – A circle parallel to the horizon of birth
place projected outward as a celestial sphere.
• Meridian – Joins the poles of the horizon (zenith
and nadir) with the poles of the celestial equator.
• Prime Vertical – Joins the meridian zenith and
nadir at right angles.

Astrology House Systems
Tropical or western astrology uses two zodiacs:
• Signs – generic to everyone with same birth date
and time.
– Rotate on a 24-hour basis, Earth rotating on its axis,
aka diurnal motion.
• Houses – personal to birth date, time and place.
– Stationary, ie 1st House is always left center (eastern)
part of circle.
• 12 signs and houses.
• Origin of zodiac is unknown.

• Martin Seymour-Smith: A personal zodiac
(houses) is superimposed upon the natural
zodiac (signs).
• All house systems are measured with both time
and/or space, except Equal Houses.
• Equal House System starts with Ascendant and
mark subsequent houses in 30° segments.
– All remaining house cusps are aspects to ascendant.

• House systems using time and space trisect semi
arcs and quadrants in complicated tables.
• Semiarcs – Sun’s diurnal arc above and below
horizon.
• Quadrants – Dividing the horizon and meridian
into four quarters.
• Koch House System – Walter Koch (1895-1970),
German. Complex house tables based upon
oblique ascension (Sun’s diurnal movement).
House Systems
• Placidus House System – Placidus de Tito (1603 –
1668), Spanish or Italian mathematician.
Complex house tables that trisect semiarcs and
quadrants.
• Porphyry House System – Porphyry (233 – 303).
Simple house system based upon quadrants of
horizon and meridian. Each quadrant evenly
divided into thirds. First and third quadrant
houses are equal and second and fourth
quadrant houses are equal.
House Systems
• Koch, Placidus and Porphyry house systems all
become very distorted in polar regions (above
67°) at certain times of the year (solstices).
• Campanus House System – Johannes Campanus
(1210 – 1296). Astrologer to Pope Urban IV.
Quadrant system dividing space
trigonometrically into sections via prime vertical.
Extremely irregular houses, can find double
intercepted signs.
House Systems
• Regiomontanus House System – Johannes Muller
(1436 – 1476). University of Vienna. Quadrant
system dividing space trigonometrically into
sections via equator. Similar to Placidus houses.
House Systems
• 0° Aries House System – Ascendant is started
with 0° Aries. Natural zodiac matches up house
system. Used with unknown birth time as
planets in signs match up to same houses and
interpretation is simplified. Used in forecasting
as well.
House Systems
• Solar House System – The Sun is placed upon the
ascendant. All house cusps are the same degree
as the Sun. Used in forecasting as well.
