Total Fitness
There are five main components of total fitness. They are:
• Physical fitness (health and skill related)
• Mental and emotional fitness (positive mental state)
• Medical fitness (free from injury, disease and illness)
• Nutritional fitness (proper nutrition for fuel, growth, and repair)
• Social fitness (healthy interaction with peers)
Physical fitness can be broken down even further, into 5 components of fitness.
They are:
• Cardiovascular fitness - ability to exercise the total body for a long period of
time without stopping. (like Mile Club)
• Muscular strength – amount of force muscle can produce (1 rep max)
• Muscular endurance – ability of a muscle to do an activity many times
without getting tired (push-up fitness test)
• Flexibility – ability to use joints fully. Muscles and joint connective tissue
need to be stretched regularly to prevent stiffness and allow full range of
motion (daily stretches, sit-n-reach)
• Body composition – percent of body fat
There are also six more parts of physical fitness that are skill related:
• Agility – change of body position quickly (basketball, soccer)
• Balance – keep upright posture (hockey, ice skating, gymnastics)
• Coordination – use two or more body parts together (baseball, tennis)
• Power – use strength quickly (football, shot put, discus)
• Reaction Time – time it takes you to move (track, swimming, driving)
• Speed – move or cover a distance of a short period of time (sprints, baseball)
Heredity and maturity can have an influence on skill related fitness.
Lesson Review

2. List 2 of the 5 components of fitness you would like to improve. How can
you go about improving each of them?
3. What areas of skill related fitness are you best at and why?
