Its culture developed because of its initial isolation from other cultures, but over time, traders, travelers, and Buddhist missionaries (religion) made their way to China over the Silk Road and by sea. The Tang dynasty was a time for new inventions. These inventions were needed and in great demand in the west. So they created the Grand Canal it is the longest canal ever built. This made travel and transportation of goods easier for the people. The emperors could move soldiers and equipment easier in an attack, and it improved communication between the regions. Samurai warriors hired to protect the daimyo's land the peasants who farmed the land. peasants poor people who had no power. They fought each other to gain more land and power for the Daimyo. The Samurai lived by the Bushido. This was their rules of honor and bravery. Some Europeans were blown off course at sea and found Japan by accident. Europe traded with Japan for about 60 years. A new shogun did not like the European influence, so he shut Japan off from the rest of the world for about 250 years. This was a period of isolationism for Japan. The arts were heavily influenced by the religious practices of Buddhism and Shintoism. Feeling that each religion focused on different needs in their lives, many Japanese followed the teachings of both religions. (you will learn more about Shintoism in our religion chart) Shinto shrines were built near sacred natural features that were considered beautiful by the Japanese. Buddhist ideas inspired many Japanese temples, paintings, poems, and plays. The martial arts are also a result of practicing Zen Buddhism. Japan traded the items listed above as well as pottery, paper, textiles, swords, books, and porcelain. Its trade throughout Asia spread Japanese influence throughout the world and also allowed many Japanese nobles, merchants, and artisans to become very wealthy.
