What’s in a leaf?
At the heart of it this national symbol honours
our namesake, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, seventh Prime
Minister of Canada. That alone is a unique claim
among Canadian universities. But look closely.
Laurier’s maple leaf is a microcosm of connectivity
and support – every vein contributing to the
health of the whole. The beauty and simplicity of
the maple leaf can only be realized through this
common purpose of nature. And so it is at Laurier
– faculty, staff, students and alumni committed to
a common vision: To Inspire Lives of Leadership
and Purpose.

Isabel Bayrakdarian
It is an honour to present to you Isabel
Bayrakdarian, a distinguished soprano whose
career has taken her around the world.
Ms. Bayrakdarian has sung in leading
international opera houses from the Metropolitan
Opera in New York to the Royal Opera House,
London, and in Chicago, San Francisco, Paris,
Milan, Houston, Salzburg, Los Angeles, Barcelona,
Dresden and Florence, among others. We are
particularly fortunate in southern Ontario that
she has been a frequent guest of the Canadian
Opera Company in Toronto.
Her repertoire includes operas by Monteverdi,
Gluck, Beethoven, Berlioz, Donizetti, Debussy,
Poulenc, Janáček and, particularly, Handel and
Mozart. She has also performed in contemporary
operas, on recital stages worldwide, and with
orchestras under the batons of the world’s
greatest conductors, including Seiji Ozawa,
Michael Tilson Thomas, Alan Gilbert, Christoph
von Dohnányi, Christoph Eschenbach, Colin
Davis, Andrew Davis, Nikolaus Harnoncourt,
Mariss Jansons, Leonard Slatkin, James Levine
and Peter Oundjian. She collaborates frequently
in concerts and recordings with her husband, the
Armenian-Canadian pianist and composer Serouj
Kradjian.
Ms. Bayrakdarian’s repertoire is remarkably
eclectic. She has recorded an album of tangos,
participated in the world premiere of Jake Heggie
and Gene Sheer’s one-act opera To Hell and Back,
was involved in a trance music collaboration with
electronica band Delerium, recorded medieval
Armenian sacred music, and is featured on the
soundtracks of The Lord of The Rings: The Two
Towers and Atom Egoyan’s Ararat. She also
participated in the BBC short film Holocaust – A
Music Memorial Film from Auschwitz and is the
subject of Long Journey Home, the Gemininominated film documenting her return to her
Armenian homeland. Major recordings include
Górecki’s Symphony No. 3 with John Axelrod
conducting the Danish National Symphony
Orchestra and Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with
4
Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San
Francisco Symphony.
Ms. Bayrakdarian’s career was launched in
the late 1990s when she was a winner of the
Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions,
sang with Lyric Opera of Chicago in the world
premiere of William Bolcom’s A View from the
Bridge, and was awarded first prize in Plácido
Domingo’s Operalia competition. Since then
Ms. Bayrakdarian has received many honours,
including four consecutive Juno Awards for Best
Classical Album (Vocal), the Queen Elizabeth
II Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Medals,
the George London Foundation Award, and the
Canada Council Virginia Parker Prize, which
is awarded “to musicians who demonstrate
outstanding talent, musicianship and artistic
excellence, and who make a valuable contribution
to the artistic life in Canada and internationally.”
Ms. Bayrakdarian may also be unique among the
world’s top sopranos in possessing a degree in
biomedical engineering!
Born in Lebanon of Armenian heritage and
now a Canadian citizen, Ms. Bayrakdarian
spearheaded the highly successful Remembrance
Concert Tour with the Manitoba Chamber
Orchestra that commemorated all “nations and
cultures that have suffered persecution.” The
tour included the mystical and memorable works
of the Armenian composer Gomidas Vartabed,
whose life was deeply affected by events of the
early twentieth century. Ms. Bayrakdarian’s
commitment to raising awareness of political and
other issues exemplifies Laurier’s commitment
to social justice. Her stellar career also evinces
extraordinary dedication and individual
excellence.
Mr. Chancellor, I am instructed by the Senate
of the University to request that you admit to the
degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, Isabel
Bayrakdarian.
Presented by Dr. Glen Carruthers

Natalie Zemon Davis
Archival researcher Dr. Natalie Zemon Davis is
Canada’s foremost scholar of early modern history.
She has had a colourful career. A Jewish-American
born in 1928 in Detroit, she attended Smith
College. At age 19, while attending summer school
at Harvard, she met and married political activist
Chandler Davis, a graduate student in mathematics.
She took an MA at Radcliffe College in 1950 and
was working on her PhD at Harvard when her
husband’s career took them to the University of
Michigan. She switched her doctoral studies to
Michigan where she received her PhD in 1959.
The couple, who had three children, faced
numerous challenges. In 1952 the FBI revoked
their passports. Dr. Davis’s husband was caught
distributing pamphlets about the communist party.
He was fired from his teaching position, tried,
and imprisoned for six months. The couple were
blacklisted from universities in the United States.
In 1962 they moved to Canada and held teaching
positions at the University of Toronto. In 1971,
Dr. Davis was hired by the University of California
at Berkeley and later, in 1978, she was named the
Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at Princeton
(a much shorter commute to her home in Toronto).
Dr. Davis held several visiting appointments at
Yale, Oxford, and Paris. She retired from Princeton
in 1996 as professor emeritus, and back home in
Toronto became adjunct professor of history and
medieval studies, and later emerita at the University
of Toronto.
Dr. Davis’s many publications focus on the
lives of ordinary people and deal with social
history, biography, women’s studies, and cultural
history. Her interdisciplinary approach has, at
its foundation, research methodology based on
archival sources. She examined documents in many
European archives and produced editions of texts
with commentary that place her findings within
the political, social, and cultural environments of
early modern Europe. Perhaps her most well-known
book is The Return of Martin Guerre (1983) about a
sixteenth-century peasant who left his village and
had his identity stolen by an imposter. The book
has been translated into 22 languages. She also
served as the consultant for the film Le retour de
34
Martin Guerre. In Fiction in the Archives (1987), Dr.
Davis published a collection of sixteenth-century
letters written by convicted criminals in France,
who were hoping to have their sentences revoked.
She discusses the circumstances surrounding the
crimes committed by both men and women and
reveals the social and political significance of these
letters. Women on the Margins (1995) tells the lives
of three seventeenth-century women: a Jewish
business woman in Germany, a Catholic nunmissionary in Quebec (who co-founds a convent),
and a Protestant text-illustrator in the Dutch
colony of Suriname. Based on archival documents
(autobiographies and memoirs), Dr. Davis
relates their stories. Trickster Travels (2006)
is a biography of the sixteenth-century author,
Al-Hasan al-Wazzan, or Leo Africanus, who was first
to describe the geography of Africa. All of her books
contain a heartfelt acknowledgment to Chandler
Davis, her husband for over sixty-five years.
Dr. Davis pioneered interdisciplinary courses
in history and anthropology, history and film,
history and literature, and the study of women
and gender. An early feminist, she and a colleague
at the University of Toronto introduced the
university’s first course on the history of women.
Dr. Davis has served as president of both the
American Historical Society and the Society for
French Historical Studies, was a founding member
of the Renaissance and Reformation journal, and
she received the Haskins prize, among many
others. In 2010, she won the prestigious Holberg
prize ($785,000 US) awarded by the Norwegian
government for outstanding scholarly work in the
arts and humanities and social sciences and was
cited as “one of the most creative historians writing
today.” In 2012, she was named a Companion of the
Order of Canada, and that same year she was given
the U.S. National Humanities Medal by President
Barack Obama.
Natalie Zemon Davis’s life and career reveals she is
a true femme forte. Mr. Chancellor, I am instructed
by the Senate of the University to request that you
admit to the degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris
causa, Natalie Zemon Davis.

Ziauddin Yousafzai
Laurier’s vision statement refers to the
importance of “…instilling the courage to
engage and challenge the world in all its
complexity.” There are few people who
have demonstrated this courage to engage
and challenge the world as unceasingly and
compellingly as Ziauddin Yousafzai, the
co-founder of Global Peace Council
Pakistan and the father of Malala Yousafzai,
a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014.
An unrelenting advocate for universal
education, Mr. Yousafzai founded and operated
a school for girls in the Swat Valley of Pakistan,
his home community, despite financial and
political hurdles. Mr. Yousafzai’s commitment
to education and peace in Pakistan was
solidified during the conflict that occurred
between the Pakistani government and the
Taliban following the attacks on the World
Trade Center in New York. It was during these
post-9/11 years that it became increasingly
difficult for Mr. Yousafzai to operate his
school. The Taliban threatened to shut down
his school, and others, if girls were allowed to
continue to attend and if curriculum changes
were not made.
Despite threats to his own well-being and that
of his family, Mr. Yousafzai was determined
that girls in the community, led by his daughter
Malala, would have the right to attend school.
Encouraged by her father to speak out for this
right, Malala blogged about her experiences
under Taliban rule and her views on education.
As a consequence, she became a target of
the Taliban. On Oct. 9, 2012, she was shot
by Taliban fighters while returning home
on a school bus. Although left for dead, she
remarkably survived. She was transported
to the United Kingdom where she made a
complete recovery.
Instead of capitulating to the desires of the
Taliban, to stop speaking in favour of peace
and the rights of girls to receive an education,
Mr. Yousafzai and his daughter Malala have
continued their advocacy efforts. Mr. Yousafzai
is the co-founder and chairperson of the Malala
Fund which supports the rights of girls to an
education worldwide. He serves as the United
Nations Special Advisor on Global Education,
the educational attaché to the Pakistani
Consulate in Birmingham, UK, and
Patron-in-Chief of Global Peace Council
Pakistan, a registered not-for-profit charity
with the government of Pakistan which seeks
to develop practices for peace in Pakistan.
Recently, Mr. Yousafzai has supported the
efforts of the newly established Global Peace
Council Canada in co-developing a peace
curriculum for Pakistan with scholars and
educators from Pakistan, a project also
involving Laurier’s Faculty of Education and
the Department of Global Studies within
Laurier’s Faculty of Arts.
The courage and passion that Mr. Yousafzai
has demonstrated in his commitment to peace
and to the rights of girls to receive an education
in Pakistan and beyond clearly reflects Laurier’s
vision to engage and challenge the world in all
its complexity.
By welcoming Mr. Yousafzai into the Laurier
alumni family today, he joins a distinguished
group of citizens who embody Laurier’s raison
d’etre: to inspire lives of leadership and purpose.
Ziauddin Yousafzai is an exemplar of this
mission. Mr. Chancellor, I am instructed by the
Senate of the University to request that you
admit to the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris
causa, Ziauddin Yousafzai.

Aziz Bhaloo
It is with great pleasure that we gather
to honour Aziz Bhaloo, an entrepreneur,
philanthropist, leader and volunteer, who devotes
his life to the service of others.
Mr. Bhaloo was born in Tanzania in 1944
and raised in a small Kenyan town by Ismaili
parents of modest means. He was a keen and
hardworking student who excelled and won
scholarships and bursaries needed to complete
high school and earn a Mechanical Engineering
degree at the University of London (Nairobi).
At the time of Mr. Bhaloo’s graduation, Kenya
was experiencing political upheaval and unrest.
In 1974, with mass genocide occurring in
neighboring Uganda threatening to spill over
into Kenya, he emigrated to Canada with his
wife Amina and their two young children.
Relocating in Toronto, Mr. Bhaloo found work
with Esso Chemical Canada while Amina took a
position in a child-care centre. By 1975 the couple
scraped together enough money to establish the
first Centre for Early Learning child-care centre,
with a focus of serving high-needs communities in
the City of Toronto. Today, their business consists
of 11 child-care centres, a Montessori school, and
industry-leading complementary food-service and
child-care staffing operations under the family’s
banner company, The Foray Group. Each day,
this organization’s 300 employees enrich the lives
of more than 18,000 children within the Greater
Toronto Area.
Mr. Bhaloo left a promising career with Esso to
create a business whose singular mission was to
make a lasting difference in the lives of children.
He proved to be a natural entrepreneur, running
successful business ventures in commercial
printing, plastics manufacturing, and real estate.
Each of these ventures had its challenges and
required the creation of strong and enduring
business partnerships and an ability to work
with many stakeholders. Their success reflects
Mr. Bhaloo’s ability to unite people with diverse
backgrounds and compelling interests around a
common goal.
50
He was inspired to succeed at business in
order to have the means to fulfill his life’s
purpose in giving back to his community and
country. Increasingly he turned his attention
to community service organizations, with the
aim of ensuring that every person, regardless
of ethno-cultural differences, is able to realize
his or her full potential. To that end, he became
involved with the Ismaili Council of Canada,
eventually becoming president. He subsequently
became chair of the International Coordinating
Committee of Focus Humanitarian Assistance,
a position he still holds. He was the director of
The Canadian Council for Christians and Jews;
served on the foundations for Sunnybrook &
Women’s College Hospital and George Brown
College; and has served in many capacities in
industry associations and government trade
missions. For the past seven years, Mr. Bhaloo
has served as the resident representative for the
Aga Khan Development Network Diplomatic
Office in Kenya, which works to improve the
welfare and prospects of people in East Africa.
His contributions have been recognized by many,
including His Highness the Aga Khan, who
bestowed Mr. Bhaloo with the title of Aitmadi;
and our Canadian Governor General, who
awarded him the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal.
Mr. Bhaloo lives a successful and, more
importantly, a significant life devoted
unconditionally to the service of others in Canada
and abroad, promoting the physical, social and
spiritual health and well-being of this and future
generations. For those of you graduating today,
Mr. Bhaloo is proof of the global impact one good
human being leading a life of leadership and
purpose can have on society. For these reasons,
Wilfrid Laurier University is proud to honour Mr.
Bhaloo with an honourary degree. Mr. Chancellor,
I am instructed by the Senate of the University to
request that you admit to the Degree of Doctor of
Letters, honoris causa, Aziz Bhaloo.
Presented by Mr. Farouk Ahamed

Martin Junge
Martin Junge was born in Chile in 1961
and completed his primary and secondary
education in Concepción. During the oppressive
military dictatorship, Junge felt called to serve
as an ordained pastor due to the deep faith
commitment and resistance that he witnessed by
Lutherans and other people of faith. He studied
Evangelical theology at Georg-August University
in Göttingen, Germany, from 1980 to 1986 before
returning to Chile.
Junge served as a pastor and as president of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chile (IELC).
He worked in ecumenical and civil-society
organizations to bring about reconciliation
among various communities and churches that
were rebuilding Chile into a democracy that
respects human rights and the rule of law. Under
his leadership, the IELC played a decisive role
in Chile’s 1999 granting of equal legal status
to the nation’s religious organizations. Junge
helped organize the annual Christian-JewishMuslim service in the cathedral in Santiago,
Chile, celebrating Chilean National Day. He was
also part of the group that transformed a former
military-regime detention and torture centre into
Santiago’s “Park of Peace” (Parque por la Paz).
In 2000 Junge went on to serve as area
secretary for Latin America with the Lutheran
World Federation (LWF). He provided leadership
to Lutheran church bodies, their ecumenical
partners and civil-society organizations that
were working to address the economic crisis
and safeguard human rights for peoples in Latin
America. Among his most notable contributions
has been his persistent work on issues of
neoliberal globalization and international
debt. He was instrumental in the publication
of research presented at the International
Symposium on Illegitimate Debt held in Oslo,
Norway, in October 2008, and convinced
governments to adopt specific policies to address
the crushing burden of illegitimate debt on many
poor countries.
68
In 2010 Junge assumed office as the LWF’s
eighth general secretary — the first from Latin
America. The LWF consists of 144 churches with
72 million members in 79 countries, the majority
of which are in the Global South. Since its
founding in 1947 in Lund, Sweden, the federation
has played an important role in helping rebuild
post-war Europe; resettle refugees (many came to
Canada); overcome apartheid; liberate Namibia;
and negotiate peace in Guatemala and throughout
the world. LWF has more recently been on the
forefront of campaigns to end violence against
women; to address the reality of people and
communities living with HIV/AIDS; in working
with Inter-Faith Action for Peace in Africa;
supporting the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize-winning
International Campaign to Ban Landmines; and
in a series of ecumenical and interfaith dialogues
aimed at fostering great understanding and
cooperative action.
With a budget of more than C$135 million
(2012) LWF’s Department of World Service, the
federation’s humanitarian agency, responds to
disasters, promotes environmental stewardship,
develops projects for creating sustainable
communities, brings together people in conflict
areas to promote peace and reconciliation, and
encourages greater gender, social and ecological
justice. World Service has a long-standing
history and partnership with UNHCR and cares
for about two million refugees and internally
displaced persons each day. In 2017, LWF will
mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation
and will continue to emphasize that reformation
is an ongoing multifaith commitment to justice
throughout God’s world.
Mr. Chancellor, I am instructed by the Senate
of the University to request that you admit to
the degree of Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa,
Martin Junge.

The Ceremony
Convocation is the most solemn ceremony within the university community. Since their beginnings
in the Middle Ages, universities have performed this ceremony in order to grant degrees to their
students and also to welcome those students into the community of scholars
which has trained them.
The Heraldic
Coat of Arms
The conferring of the degree is symbolized either by an acknowledgement or handshake from the
Chancellor or the President or other conferring officers of the university.
As an outward sign of his or her new state, the student wears a hood. Each degree within
a university has a hood of unique colours and trim in order that the student’s status may be
recognized—indeed every university guards its own set of hoods from use by any other university.
In order to recognize the nature of this event for the students involved, the university asks that
parents and friends of the students participating in this ceremony withhold their applause until all
members being admitted to each degree have left the dais. Students are asked to remain in their
seats while other graduates receive their degrees.
The Academic Degrees
The academic degree is a title conferred on an individual by a university as recognition of the
completion of a course of study or for a certain attainment. In Canada, the three stages in higher
education are represented by the degrees of bachelor, master and doctor. Wilfrid Laurier University
is given the authority to grant degrees by the Wilfrid Laurier University Act.
The bachelor’s degree is awarded at the honours and general level. An honours degree program
emphasizes the acquisition of a broad and deep knowledge of the student’s chosen honours subject,
including both skill at applying the subject and appreciation of its relation to general knowledge
and society. A general degree program emphasizes a balance between an in-depth understanding
of the student’s major subject and a knowledge and appreciation of other fields. Completion of an
honours degree normally takes four years and a general degree, three years.
The master’s degree is the second degree in higher education. Students complete concentrated
and specialized work at a more advanced level in an academic discipline or professional area. Most
course work is within the field of specialization and a research project or thesis is normally required.
Some master’s degrees provide professional qualifications. The master’s degree usually requires one
or two years of study after a bachelor’s degree.
The doctoral degree is the highest academic degree granted by a university. Candidates for the
degree spend several years in the advanced study of a specialized field of knowledge. The capstone
of the degree is the doctoral dissertation, an extended work based upon independent research. The
dissertation demonstrates the candidate’s command of both the subject matter and the exacting
methods of scholarship, and makes an original contribution to knowledge.

Honorary Degrees
Honorary degrees are conferred by Wilfrid Laurier University in recognition of outstanding
scholarly, creative, or professional achievement or distinguished public and community service.
The university may grant the following honorary degrees: Doctor of Laws (LLD), Doctor of
Letters (DLitt), Doctor of Science (DSc) and Doctor of Divinity (DDiv).
Wilfrid Laurier University Mace
The mace of Wilfrid Laurier University was officially presented by the Euler family at the 1963 fall
convocation in memory of The Honourable W.D. Euler, former senator of Canada and the first
chancellor of the university. It weighs 16 pounds and was manufactured by the firm of Henry
Birks Limited, Montreal.
The ferrule near the base of the shaft contains ivory from a walrus tusk obtained from Coral
Harbour, Northwest Territories. The ten-sided shaft, representing the ten provinces, merges into
the head of the mace which bears the ten provincial crests. The wood used at the point where
the shaft meets the head of the mace is elm taken from the bannister post of Conrad Hall, the
original seminary building. Above this are four crests relating to the history of the institution:
a crest of Waterloo County, the Luther Coat of Arms, the crest of the Waterloo Lutheran
Seminary and the coat of arms of the University of Western Ontario.
The head of the mace is made of maple and bears the Federal Coat of Arms, above which is the
monogram of Queen Elizabeth II, during whose reign the university’s charter was granted. On
the reverse side is the crest of Wilfrid Laurier University and the monogram of King George V,
during whose reign the original charter was granted. The top of the mace is a crown, mounted
with jewels, symbolizing the authority of the State.

The Marshal’s Baton
Detail of the
convocation
marshal’s baton.
Dr. Fred Binding, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology for 32 years retired in
July 2003. He had served as the university marshal for ten years. Sadly, Dr. Binding died in
August 2003. In memory of his contribution to convocation ceremonies, artist Rex Lingwood
was commissioned to create a marshal’s baton.
In the baton, the artist incorporates a range of visual references that relate to the graduation
ceremony, both directly and symbolically. In keeping with the nature of the ceremony, some
of the forms are traditionally associated with ceremonial staffs, and the baton’s design echoes
the elaborate theatricality of the event and the flair brought to the occasion by Dr. Fred Binding.
The ends may be read as abstracted figure forms wrapped in the academic gown and hood,
with details in the university colours: purple and gold. These forms also read as plant buds,
symbolizing the life stage of the graduates. The Greek alphabet is inset into an internal side
surface in the shaft of the baton. This is a reference to the interests of Dr. Fred Binding. It
also acknowledges that language is at the core of university education and that the Greek
language has particular importance in western culture.
The commission of the baton was made possible with the generous support of the
Department of Psychology and Wilfrid Laurier University Retirees’ Association.
