VIMSHOTTARI DASHA SYSTEM OF TIMING / DASAS amp BHUKTIS
The dasha system for timing of events is an important technique in vedic astrology. Ancient
masters had described numerous systems of dashas planetary periods in their works.
Whether all of those were fullytested techniques is very hard to decipher. Most vedic texts
are collections of sanskrit verses in which the old masters had inscribed in an ornate,
poignant yet terse manner the various planetary effects, but only very rarely with
accompanying illustrative examples. Over the years, more recent astrologers have attempted
to test the validity of many of these dashas using approaches which varied tremendously in
their degree of acuity and objectivity. Most contemporary experts in vedic astrology agree
that, if the proof of the pudding is in the eating, vimshottari dasha based on lunar progression
is the most valid and accurate system for timing of events not only in natal charts but also in
annual, national mundane and horary horoscopes. Vimshottari means and the entire dasha
cycle spans over years. The two luminaries, five planets and the two lunar nodes considered
by vedic astrologers rule over periods varying from to years each during the years in this
order Ketu S. node of moon, venus, sun, moon, mars, rahu N. node of moon, jupiter, saturn
and mercury. These rule for , , , , , , , and years respectively. Nowhere can one find the
rationale behind the assignment of this order or of the durations. The sidereal asterismal
position of natal moon determines the point at which one enters or starts in the year cycle.
The d zodiac is divided into asterisms, each d m long. The first d m starting at sidereal aries
d, is ruled by ketu with venus, sun, moon, mars, rahu, jupiter, saturn, mercury and venus
following in the same order as that followed in the rulership assignment in the vimshottari
dasha. Each vimshottari dasha period is subdivided into nine periods or bhuktis. The first
bhukti in any dasha is ruled by the dasha lord itself and is followed by the bhuktis of other
planets. The first bhukti in the dasha of sun is ruled by sun, followed by the bhuktis of moon,
mars, rahu, jupiter, saturn, mercury, ketu and venus. Each subperiod can be further divided
proportionately into antaras, pratyantaras, sukshmas etc. However, given the controversies
regarding the most accurate values for ayanamshas precessional corrections for converting
tropical longitudes into sidereal longitudes and inaccuracies in reported birth times, their
practical importance is reduced. A TOUCH OF MATH A simple way of calculating bhuktis
follows Multiply the duration in years for the dashas of the dasha and bhukti lords. Multiply
the right most digit by to get the days in the bhukti. The remaining digits to the left represent
the months in that bhukti. Example, Saturn bhukti in jupiter dasha.
Duration of dashas, saturn and jupiter years x Think of this as months and x days or ymd.
Ideally, one must use the day savana year for dashas and in my experience, I have found
best results with Lahiris ayanamsha and day year when delineating vimshottari dashas.
Lahiris ayanamsha can be calculated by the simple formula PRECESSIONAL
CORRECTION IN SECS.YEAR OF BIRTHX. Eg., For the correction is . sec min d m. This
quantity when subtracted from all tropical longitudes yields the sidereal longitudes. The
following table would make it simple for one to know the natal lunar asterism and the first
dasha in ones life Asterism beginning at the following sidereal longitudes of moon Deg min

the good old rule of three, one can determine the balance of first dasha. If the natal sidereal
moon is at d longitude, then it has another dm to go in jupiters asterism. The first dasha will
be of jupiter and the duration will be y/dm x dm. This can also be written as mo/mxm.
months. WHAT NEXT Once the dashas have been calculated, next comes the interpretation
of dashas. Some basic rules which must be followed are a The dasha period determines the
primary boundaries of effects that one might experience during the dasha. b The results
during the bhukti period would depend on the interaction between dasha and bhukti lords,
but a bhukti cannot give or take away what falls outside the jurisdiction of the dasha. The
dasha effect supervenes. c The strength of the dasha and bhukti lords determine the extent
to which the effects of these planets would materialize. d Any special yogas or combinations
formed by the dasha and bhukti lord in the natal horoscopes would materialize in their dasha
and bhuktis or in those of the planets that are in the stars of the yogaforming planets. Mutual
angular disposition of jupiter and moon results in a gajakeshari yoga, a very benefic
combination for fame, success and wealth. A person with stronger jupiter and moon would be
more successful and higherplaced than another one with gajakeshari but with the two planets
weak in the horoscope. Similarly, a person with gajakeshari in the st and th house is likely to
experience a higher degree of success than one with the jupiter and moon in the rd and th
signs from the ascendant still in mutual angles. e During a dasha and to a lesser extent in a
bhukti, influences of the planet/s are expressed according to the nature of the sign the planet
is in the natal chart. Planets in cardinal signs generate restlessness, activity, outwardly
expression, dynamism, the opposite effects are seen during periods of planets in fixed signs.
Mutable signs generate ambiguity, bipolar responses and nervousness. The quadruplicity of
the sign all sidereal must likewise be taken into account, particularly the way in which it
interacts with the inherent nature of the planet. A fiery mars in a fiery cardinal sign can
express itself strongly and is very much in its own element. If it is not in a malefic house th, th
or th from ascendant or aspected by malefic planets, its periods signify a large amount of
activity and personal growth and reshaping. Likewise, moon in a watery sign would be able
to express its effects more in the way it is supposed to. Moon in a fixed fiery sign would be
very uncomfortable. This incidentally is related to the concept of house ownerships,
exaltation and debilitation. f A vital issue that must always be kept in mind is that the planet
ruling over a period indicates the source of effect during its dasha or bhukti. If it is strong by
rulership, position and association the the effects during its period will be strongly felt and
vice versa. The nature of the effect will be determined by the planet in whose
star the dasha or bhukti lord is situated. The asterismal sub which is the angular
representation of the duration of bhukti in a dasha, considering the dasha duration to
represent an arc of dm indicates success or failure depending on its relationship inherent and
housewise with the asterism lord indicating the effect during a dasha. The following example
might make this more clear. In a horoscope, mercury is in scorpio ascendant in the asterism
of mercury and sub of venus. During the dasha of mercury, the source of effects would be
mercury, the nature of effects experienced will be determined by the asterism lord, mercury
in this case and the houses ruled by it th and th and occupied by it . Venus, the sublord is in
the nd house and is in the th from the th house, rd from th and nd from st house and
mercury. So during the dasha of mercury, the th and st house effects would flourish, while
the th house will be moderately helped. This translates into numerous obstacles, gains from
insurance or inheritances th, moderate earnings for ones capabilities and a period of good
health and immense personal growth . Mercury is an active planet but it is located in a fixed
watery sign scorpio. It is strong in shadbala strength determination, another future article, so
the effects will be prominently felt. But since it is not in a very congenial sign, the native
would have enormous restlessness without a vent for expressing it and things would move
very slowly or not at all. There would be opportunities for spiritual and metaphysical
experiences and growth. The intellectual as opposed to emotional faculties will be utilized
more in these matters. g Associations and aspects from other planets to the planets ruling
the dasha and bhukti modify and modulate the effects of the period lords. As a general rule,
friendly and benefic planets naturally benefic such as jupiter, venus, mercury and waxing
moon or benefic by disposition planets ruling over angular and trinal houses from the
ascendant help move matters, malefics natural such as saturn, mars or rulers of th, th and th
signs from the ascendant exert the opposite effects. Sun and waning moon and rulers of nd,
rd and th signs from the ascendant have mixed effects, partly benefic and partly malefic.
Some authorities consider the sun as a cruel but benefic planet. Rahu and ketu are shadow
planets and assume the qualities of planets in whose sign they are placed. However, they
tend to be generally malefic in nature. The nodes are in a class by themselves and different
authorities have dealt with those in different ways. Some have assigned signs as their own
and signs in which they are exalted or debilitated, as is the case for other planets. Others
have refrained to do so. My personal view is that the nodes take on the attribute of their sign
dispositor. Any planet which is in conjunction with the nodes loses its propensity to bring
about effects and can only express through the nodes in their dashas, bhuktis or transits.
Nodes have a very significant influence in ones life and nodal periods sensitize and expose
one to influences beyond ones immediate control. Perhaps these influences originate from
actions in other time periods. They have been thought to signify karmic influences, rahu
signifying karmagenerating actions future karma while ketu signifies deeds already done akin
to the concepts presented by Schulmann in his reincarnation astrology books. I shall attempt
to elaborate on the effects of the nodes in a future article. h Dasha effects must be studied
simultaneously with transits. The stars of the dasha and bhukti lords and of their asterismal
dispositors are sensitive zones during the dasha and bhukti. When these stars are transited
by the moon and/or sun or other significant planets, the effect fructifies. The transit of the
dasha and bhukti lords through different houses and stars are also considered. This article
may not turn anyone into an expert dasha delineator but hopefully would provide an overview
of this interesting method of lunar progression which constitutes and important method for
timing of events and for determining planetary influences in a horoscope.
Dasas Timing Events In Jyotish
The Rasi, or birth chart, gives the basic indications for an individual or event. For example,
Mars in the rd bhava house means success through ones own efforts. The question then
arises as to when this will occur in ones youth, middleage, oldage, or in a mix of these
timeframes It may also happen that contradictory indications occur. How can these
occurrences be reconciled If Mars is indicating success, but Sun indicates obstructions, how
do we integrate these opposing forces to arrive at a consistent picture of the birth chart The
answers to these questions can be found in the dasas, which are systems used for timing
events in Jyotish. If two grahas show opposing indications, it may indicate that each will
occur, but at different times. Part of ones life may show success and rise in career, while
other parts may show obstructions and struggle. The dasas allow a determination of when
these periods will express themselves, and to what degree. Both influences may also occur
simultaneously success, but with much effort. Vimshottari Dasa There are many dasa
systems available in Jyotish over . Each system has its own particular uses and rules for
when they should be used based upon the birth chart. The most popular dasa system is
Vimshottari. This belongs to a class of dasa systems that are nakshatrabased .
Nakshatrabased systems use the nakshatras to calculate the start of the dasa cycle. In the
vimshottari dasa, the nakshatra position of Moon determines the start of the dasa, and each
graha
Mars. After this the Ketu mahadasa begins. whose ruler is Saturn. Venus. Just as there are
major dasa periods. Since there are nakshatras of extent . or current world cycle. Each
subperiod consists of the graha periods. This is reflected in the dasa scheme through the
subdasas. since Moon is very near the end of Uttara Bhadrapada. so mahadasa means
great period. Jupiter. Summing the lengths of the dasas. In other words. If Saturn is afflicted.
The length of each subperiod maintains the same ratio as the length of the mahadasa period.
Moon. which is Uttara Bhadrapada. there are also subperiods. we arrive at years. The length
of each graha dasa period is given below. Sun. years . . For example. except maybe for the
very early infant period. which covers to Pisces the birth time corresponds to the end of the
Saturn dasa. this means that the ill effects of Saturn will be felt for most of the first year of
life. Rahu. days after birth. Suppose Moon is in Pisces at degrees. Vimshottari Dasa Periods
Graha Length Years Sun Moon Mars Rahu Jupiter Saturn Mercury Ketu Venus The
vimshottari dasas occur in the order shown. in the same order as shown above. SubPeriods
Life consists of cycles within cycles within cycles. this person was born into the Saturn
vimshottari dasa period. the next dasa period will start. Jupiter. x . Ketu. Now.from Sun . with
the subperiods being Ketu. called mahadasas maha means great. Rahu. starting with the
mahadasa period. followed by Venus. the Mercury dasa starts with the Mercury subdasa.
Moon. and Mercury is wellplaced. a good start in life. To calculate the time left in the Saturn
dasa we proceed as follows Uttara Bhadrapada extends from gt of Pisces Each nakshatra is
minutes of arc wide Moon is minutes of arc away from the end of Uttara Bhadrapada / . and
ending with Saturn. There is no limit to the number of subperiods that can be considered. but
in most cases are considered.Ketu has a dasa period associated with it. Calculating The
Vimshottari Dasa The vimshottari dasa is calculated based upon the nakshatra position of
the Moon at birth. For example. so the amount of time left from birth to the end of the Saturn
Dasa is . minutes of arc. and Mercury. Mars. is the fraction of Uttara Bhadrapada left for
Moon to traverse Length of Saturn Dasa years. days This means that . this is taken as the
quotnaturalquot lifespan of a person living in Kali Yuga. this corresponds to the th nakshatra.
Sun. while for the rest of the youth and adolescent life the influence will be that of a
wellplaced Mercury. which is Mercury. Saturn. Hence.
we will use terms like subsub period or. In the above case of a person born into Saturn
dasa. Summary Dasas are systems used for timing events in Jyotish. This is a very useful
technique that will easily reveal things that are not otherwise obvious. This is the bad news.
A key point to remember is that this shift applies to all dasa equally. The vimshottari cycle
repeats itself. There is one vimshottari dasa for each graha from Sun . a . The degree to
which you can rectify or determine. years. In a similar way. and one result of this is an
occasional conflict in notation. A Valuable Technique For Analyzing Dasa Periods A very
valuable technique in analyzing dasa periods is to take the bhava occupied by the current
mahadasa graha as the lagna ascendant. Many dasa systems exist. as at this level they only
last for the order of weeks. By contrast. a Saturn/Mars/Sun/Jupiter Saturn mahadasa. Of
course. lets assume a minute error in the birth time. A Confusing Nomenclature India is a
large place. To analyze the Mercury mahadasa. the Saturn/Mars period involves only grahas.
and so on can be calculated. Mars subdasa. Suppose that a birth chart has a Taurus lagna
and Mercury in the th in Virgo. so it corresponds to a simple offset in the dasa scheme. take
Virgo as the lagna and reinterpret the chart from this viewpoint. If the time was minute early.
A good understanding of the birth chart . On the average. the lengths of all the subperiods.
To determine the birth time accurate to a few minutes requires using at least the first or
second subdasas./ x . subsubperiods. If the birth time were in error by minutes. The time of
important events. Unknown Birth Times Good News And Bad News Since the vimshottari
dasa calculations depend on the position of Moon at birth. the problem is complicated since
other grahas can affect both Saturn and Mars. The Mercury subperiod of the Mercury
mahadasa is therefore x / . . this translates into . which translates into / minute of arc for
every minute of clock time. This means that the nd and lower sublevels would be relatively
useless. For the Saturn mahadasa of length years. assuming the birth chart is known. this
would translate into a x . and if minute later. In one system. errors in the birth time can
significantly shift the dasa periods. days. The main point is that it requires a greater and
greater skill of the jyotishi to analyze successively deeper dasa levels. antardasa for the
subsubperiod. would subtract from it.Ketu. The Venus subperiod of Mercury lasts length of
Mercury mahadasa x length of Venus mahadasa/ . For a person born in a long dasa period
such as Saturn. the third subdasa may be required. Moon moves degree every hours. The
timespan of one complete vimshottari cycle is years. the length of these subperiods is
comparable to the error caused by a minute discrepancy in the birth time./ x length of dasa
period in the dasa periods. and can therefore be used in determining dasas of countries.

nakshatrabased system that uses the position of Moon at birth to fix the start of the dasa
periods. Going to deeper subdasa levels means that you need to integrate the effects of
multiple grahas and all the subtle connections between them. In order to avoid any
confusion. the dasas are called bhukti for the subperiod. and pryantardasa for the subsubsub
period. or . day offset in the dasa periods. That is. In other words. . Jupiter subsubsub dasa
period requires knowledge of grahas and their interactions such as aspects and
conjunctions.

the transiting moon in relation to the natal moon signifies one of the four states which. moon.
th or th sign from natal moon pisces. leo and sagittarius . Timing of events is a vitally
important aspect of astrology. while the longest is the minor period of venus in its own major
period years and months. mercury. The results are described under . There is no vedha

must be considered as a house. Planets transiting through the other stars would signify good
results. We next count this star from the natal lunar star which is considered as . one

approach anything smaller than the minor period with caution. The vimshottari lunar dasha is
an extremely useful technique for ascertaining the planetary periods prevailing in ones life.
For this.If the transiting moon is in the rd. If in our example the natal moon in pisces was in
jupiters asterism then a planet transiting the st th amp th. then the good effects of the former
are either nullified or not expressed. then it will be extremely bad in iron. The zodiac is
divided into stars. in turn. we find out the star not sign in which a new moon occurs signifying
the beginning of a new lunar month. Table indicates the pairs of such houses for each
planet.If the transiting moon is in the st. Effects of planets as indicated in the natal horoscope
would always supervene the effects promised by planets in transit. Incidentally. Any given
moment is under the effect of planets which rule over the major. determine the effect of the
planet sun during its stay in the sign capricorn. However. saturn and mercury. sub. The sun
transiting through capricorn th sign from pisces would be beneficial as long as cancer th from
pisces is unoccupied. Transits of slowmoving planets such as jupiter. There are blocking
signs for each good sign.Each mahadasa can be further divided into subperiods. . cancer or
scorpio in our example then the state would be silver. virgo or sagittarius in our example then
the state would be copper. TRANSITS. One therefore utilizes planetary transits to further
narrow down the period of occurence of an event. . For example. mildly evil in silver and
minimally bad or ineffective in gold state. Each subperiod start with the dasa of the pervious
levels period and continues in the same order as the mahadasas. this same order of
rulership is employed in the vimshottari dasha system. ruled by jupiter. . Several methods for
delineating transit influences have been described. but would give weak or mixed effects in
copper and would be ineffective when in iron state. This can be used to rectify the birth time
given the times of important events. Lastly.If the transiting moon is in the nd. this would be
considered as the first house in the transit horoscope. Merely being in a good sign is not
enough as one must consider the presence of another planet in the vedha or blocking sign. .
will be good when in silver. if another planet enters the vedha sign. idol. venus.or
interperiods. minor. th th amp rd and th th amp th stars therefrom. If a planet is in a benefic or
good sign Table it will give excellent results if in gold state. Errors in the birth time offset the
dasa periods by an amount that depends on the error in the birth time and the birth dasa. and
a skilled jyotishi. The vedic astrologer must always keep the natal horoscope in mind while
examining transit effects of planets. a form of lunar progression and other related methods
and transits have been described for that very purpose. saturn and the lunar nodes are
considered very significant. th or th sign from natal moon taurus. th or th sign from natal
moon aries. then the good results due to suns transit through the th house will be blocked.
leo or capricorn in our example then the state would be gold. libra or aquarius in our example
then the state would be iron. bad in copper. A third consideration involves the transit of
planets in the asterism with reference to the natal lunar asterism. While a planet is transiting
through a benefic sign. The shortest period in the entire vimshottari cycle of years is the
minor period of sun in the major period of sun months and days. This would give indications
of the general effects during that month. In vedic astrology. If during the solar transit. If the
transiting planet is in a bad sign. th or th sign from natal moon gemini. rd th amp st. MORE
ON TIMING OF EVENTS Even the most uncanny prediction about someones future loses
much of its impact if the time of its occurrence cannot be accurately estimated. rahu. venus
and moon would indicate bad effects.

distant introspection. Note No vedha exists between sun and saturn or moon and mercury.
Ashtakavarga is also used for other predictive purposes such as determination of longevity.
More advanced considerations of transit effects would include ashtakavarga which is a highly
involved method that takes into account the contribution of all planets and sensitive points in
a horoscope. These represent phases in life when one is forced to take stock of events
leading to the present state and to reevaluate the progress in life and to redesign strategies
for future actions. . . Obviously. Saturn stays for almost months in a sign and is considered a
major indicator of the ravages of time. st and nd sign from the natal moon and to a marginally
lesser extent when it transits the th or th sign from the natal moon. Moon . . combining
methods and giving a /rd weighting to each would result in a fairly accurate estimate of the
effects of a transiting planet. good or bad. The word Gocara simply means movement of
planets along the circle of the zodiac. If during the dasa of jupiter. As is true for astrology in
general. is based upon the transit or movement of planets from time to time through the
various Signs of the zodiac starting. in order to highlight houses which are especially
sensitive to transit influences. . . Gocara or transit etc. from a fixed point viz. moon or jupiter
transits through one of the three stars belonging to mercury. the position of the natal Moon. .
GOCARA. all these techniques should be used in concert with the vimshottari dasha system
of timing and sidereal longitudes. of course. FROM BIRTH STARLORD IN RESULTS STAR

dasha period. DASA You have come across the terms such as Astakavarga. You have
already seen how a planet produces effects. Table I Benefic and vedha houses in brackets
next to the benefic house of transiting planets. There might be materialistic setbacks or other
occurrences which bring on the state of mind necessary for such an objective.VEDHA. .
Saturn . these periods of saturn can indeed be highly beneficial. . . . Though the word Go
means cow. a judicious analysis and synthesis of various techniques should be carried out
when examining transit effects. during its Dasa. here it stands for planets that are possessed
of rays or lustre. These have often been dreaded as evil years but usually indicate a period
of learning. I should like to tell you something about this Gocara before proceeding further.
The Gocarasystem. The effects of the major and minor dasha period are likely to be
activated when the above four indicators would transit through the stars of the planets in
whose stars the major and minor dasha lords are placed in the natal horoscope. ray etc. .

Saturn in the last degrees. th and llth houses from the Moon. you should not think that the
Sun is in the nd house from the Moon. and places. So if you want to apply this system with
the Sun or Lagna as the starting point. For every place producingj good or bad effects there
is a place called Vedha which when occupied by some other planet nullifies the previous
effects. from herself./ years. still it has a particular part of that period which is considered
most potent. In this case too you must be exact and scientific in your method. Jupiter and
Venus in the middle degrees. For example. Moon should be considered as the pivot for the
changing fortunes of all beings. . Generally the nine planets beginning with the Sun take
respectively the following periods to pass through a Rasi month. month. . Similarly in the

such houses counted from the Sun or Lagna. If the Sun in transit comes to the th degree of
Vrsabha. good or bad. For this purpose you . . The Moon is beneficial in . It isj what is called
VEDHA. amp the last months. bad are cancelled. and . . year. and places from the Moon.
Jupiter is good in . . When the mind is content. They are respectively for the planets
beginning with the Sun the first days. Rahu and Ketu produce good effects only in the rd.
Though a planet is expected to produce its effects. But before I take up that task I should like
to tell you some other detail about this. So the effects of transit must be considered with
reference to all these three factors. . good or bad and in which houses. . at the time. He
should be considered to be in the first house itself. What does it mean It means that when
the Sun passes through the natal Moon at any time if there is some other planet transiting
the same Rasi i. the Moons Sign and the one occupied by the Sun. the last Ghatis. th and th
houses from the Moon. But you have to consider the planets as lords of houses counted of
course from either the Sun or Lagna transiting the various Bhavas from either. For. and
places. th. as her phases were observed by men in the dim past and were connected by
them with their vicissitudes and changes in weather etc. ./ years. . it is but right that the. . the
Sun is good in transit when he passes through the rd house. Saturn. . I days in the middle.
Mercury is auspicious in . throughout the period of its passage over a house. In the same
manner bad effects too are nullified by their Vedha positions being tenanted by some other
planets at the same time. and Mercury and Rahu throughout their passage. throughout the
period of month. you can say whether a planet in transit is in one or an other house from the
Moon. the effects here. . month. Venus is favourable in . must make a new Bhava chart with
the longitude of the Moon at birth as the Lagna. still there would be nothing good coming out
of this position if at that time some planet other than Saturn transits the th house from the
Moon. there is some other planet with the Sun. months in the middle. So the effects of his
transit through the other house are to bamp understood to be bad. and places. the first days.
For example. Similarly Mars. The reason for this is not far to seek. Taking the natal Moon as
the starting point you have to proceed to consider which planets are. The Sun produces good
effects when he passes in transit through the rd. in the case of this Gocara system generally
the planets as such are considered and not as owners of Bhavas. If this is done properly.
When such is the case. . Moreover. Again. The same idea may be put in another form as
follows The Sun and Mars produce effects when they pass through the initial degrees of a
Rasi. . even a beggar does not fear a king. it is the mind that is responsible for the happiness
and misery of man.important factors in a horoscope viz. Now I shall give the details of the
usual Gocara system. . but its Vedha is the th house. Still the ancients have given greater
weight and consideration to the Moons position at birth. months. let us suppose that the M
oon is in the th degree of Mesa. . the Moon is the Cosmic Mind or the one born of the mind of
the Supreme./days. The idea is that although the Sun transiting the rd house from the natal
Moon should yield very good results.
An important exception to the Vedharule is that it does not operate in the case of planets
that are related as father and son. joy. victory.The Vedha positions of Saturn and Ketu are
the same as those of Mars. When he passes through the Third house. there will be an end of
ailments. In the Fifth house he will create fever. Progress and prosperity. and physical strain.
Jupiter causes the following effects while transiting the houses in order Quitting ones
birthplace. Loss of children. In the Eleventh house he produces wealth. very handsome
income. there will be acquisition of i a good position. Sickness of ones wife. unhappiness.
separations from ones relatives and mental agony. allround happiness.government and
excessive heat. begetting children and earning money. Trouble from enemies and ones own
relatives and diseases. fear of enemies. When he transits the Eighth house. Decline of
prosperity. irritability. there will be fear. there is no Vedha between the Sun and Saturn as
they are respectively father and son. frequent illness. loss of money. In the Eighth house
there will be fever. Mercury brings about the following effects in order when he passes
through the houses beginning with the Janma Rasi Loss of money. impediments. he will also
be subjected to humiliation. separation from ones kith and kin and diseases caused by the
vitiation of blood and bile as well as those caused by excessive heat. Happiness. fever etc.
humiliation and danger from quadrupeds. good . family happiness and effectiveness of ones
words. Now I intend telling you in detail the effects of Gocara or transit of the several planets
through the twelve houses counted from the Sign occupied by the Moon at birth. delusion
etc. . and miseries. and retarded gait through physical weakness and loss of vitality. Allround
happiness. In the Ninth there will be humiliation caused by loss of wealth etc. lt Allround
prosperity and joy as well as happiness and good fortune. conjugal happiness and birth of a
son. there will be danger.. Birth of a son. there will be cessation of enmities and quarrels.
Venus produces the following effects in the houses Enjoyment of all kinds of pleasures.
Quarrel. When he passes through the Ninth house. In the Seventh house he causes
misunderstandings with ones wife. In the Tenth house he causes wicked activities. When he
transits the Second house. Sorrow on account of relatives. relatives and wealth. illness and
wearisome journeys. illuck. In the Fourth he causes loss of position. sorrow. The Moon will
produce the following effects when she passes through the houses counted from her natal
position Rise of fortune. happiness. position. and fear of defeat. and expenditure. Adversity.
progress. So too there is no Vedha between the Moon and Mercury. Good income. position.
bleeding and loss of wealth and honour. success. His transit through the Twelfth house will
produce great strain. Loss of wife. improper desire or thoughts. Gain of wealth. When he
passes through the Sixth house. the native will suffer from ailments. the following bad effects
will be experienced Fatigue. there will be illness. he will have illness caused by stomach and
anus troubles. acquisition of gold ornaments and great joy. Financial gain. victory.
eyedisease and stomachtrouble. Birth of children. Grief and danger to wealth. sickness. For
example. Wealth. enemies. sound health. indiscreet words or verbal warfare and loss of
wealth. the subject will undertake wearisome journeys. friends and wealth. When he passes
through the Second house. lt obstruction. chance of being deceived and avarice. separation
from the near and dear ones. When he transits the Sixth house. there will be loss of wealth.
Saturn is supposed to bring about the following effects in the houses Illness and performance
of funeral rites. Good journey for auspicious purposes. untoward events. Mars will give the
following effects when he passes through the houses mental grief. children and mental
powers. loss of money. When he passes through the Fourth house. His passage through the
Tenth house will enable the subject to accomplish a mighty undertaking. acquisition of wealth
quarrel with ones wife and children. When the same planet transits the Fifth house. Loss of
position. children etc. Acquisition of position. fear. Trouble to wealth and children. In the Third
he will give rise to victory. excessive heat. passes through the First house the Sign tenanted
by the natal I Moon. fear. association with the virtuous and royal favour. illness and
impediments to ones work. there will be mental agitation. quarrel with friends and fever.
recovery from sickness. health and destruction of enemies. financial gain and success in all
undertakings. honour. will be unhappy and be deprived of the company of his wife and
kinsmen. there would not be any cancellation of the previous effects. Trouble to wife. The
idea is that in the case pf the Sun even if a Vedha position be occupied by Saturn. Lastly in
the Twelfth house he engenders loss of wealth. obstacles to ones projects. long journeys and
fear. wealth. Safety and security. loss of money. loss of wealth and hostility. loss of wealth.
health and addition to landed property. sorrow on account of children and quarrels with ones
relatives. wealth and servants. and sickness. Acquisition of children. Increase of happiness
and friends. all kinds of happiness. quarrels. cattle. When the Sun . Trouble to ones property.
honour etc. grief and delusion. Fatigue through needless journeys. When he passes through
the Seventh house. illness of the stomach and sorrow on account of kinsmen. attainment of
desired objects. His passage through the Eleventh house will help the native to acquire a
good position. troubles from the King or . wealth ard cure of diseases. humiliation.
the th is Karma or action. the Sun.That is. Dhanistha and Visakha. While drawing the lines
see that the ends of all the lines jut out so that you may get points. The effects of the transits
of Ketu are the same as those of Rahu. and illness of wife and children. Rahu through the th.
you have to think that there is danger to life. In this connection you are required to remember
some more technical terms The natal star is called Janmanaksatra. there will East rt amp i i s

horizontal lines and seven vertical lines crossing the previous ones. the th is Ksema or
happiness. Now look at the figure on page for clarification. Loss. Fatigue owing to worthless
business. Let us suppose your natal star to be Mrgasiras. Loss of money. . acquisition of
many kinds of wealth and unique renown. Mars. Sorrow. the Sun through the th. Phalga U.
So the last will be Bharani. The idea is that if the natal star is Krttika and if the Sun transits at
the time the star Sravana. the second one form that is Sampat or wealth. This means there is
mutual affliction or Vedha between these two stars. and sickness. and death. then it is to be
inferred that there is danger to the natives life. Jupiter. loss of wealth through enemies.
Venus. For example. then the effect would be fear and anxiety. and the st houses. which is
the Vedha for the star that is th from the natal star viz. Then its Vedha is Uttarasadha.
Bharani and Magha. Happiness. loss of honour. and Mercury through the th. Venus through
the th. If the Sun is transiting Uttarasadha. you have to conclude that there is trouble in store
for the native. All kinds of happiness. So if on a particular day or period the Sun is transiting a
star which happens to be the Vedha one for ones natal asterism. and loss of position and
wealth. Dhanistha it becomes the Adhana.e. Happiness. The first asterism that should be
written at the point in the Northeastern corner is Krttika. there is every likelihood of loss of
wealth and honour. the th is Paramamaitra or very friendly. Krttika and Sravana. they tend to
produce danger to life. if the Sun is passing through not Uttarasadha but throughquot
Visakha. and continuous misery. Interest in forbidden activities. Jupiter and Saturn. There is
one common feature that is found among the four planets viz. NakyatraGocara Connected
with the subject of Gocara or planetary transits there is a method of finding out whether a
particular period is favourable or not. the th is Maitra or friendly. Loss of wealth. Mars. This is
done by noting the nature of the star occupied by the Sun in transit and its. the th one is
Pratyak Pratyra or obstruction. Saturn and Mercury When the Moon passes through the th
house. the rd is Vipat or danger. relationship with ones natal asterism and some other stars
which bear close kinship with that. Poverty. Rahu. which is called the SaptasalakaCakra. In
this figure you note that some stars face one another. For this purpose a diagram iamp
needed. Jupiter through the rd. th. the Sun. Rahu produces the following effects while
passing through the houses Death or serious illness. when these transit through the th. Now
you must know how to read from this diagram whether there is any untoward transit of the
Sun with regard to the natal star etc. the th one from the natal star. the th one is Nidhana or
death. the th one is Sadhana or achievement. obstacles to the performance of religious rites.

should be noted with regard to the transits of the Moon. In this scheme there is one more
asterism called Abhijit which comes in between Uttarasadha and Sravana. Loss. Gain.

for the natal star but for the Adhana star i. Mars through the th. Danger to life. gted lt Magha .

falling of meteors or with any other extraordinary event. as i . Certain stars counted from the
natal one are assigned to different limbs of the person. If these positions are occupied by
benefics in transit. The effect of this is not at all happy. death will be the result. On the other
hand. .the limbs and their effects in the case of the Sun and other planets separately. it will
yield most excellent results when it transits a good house which is its own house or its
exaltation. Even if a planet occupies a very bad house according to the rules of transit. if the
same natal star in any round happens to synchronize with the change of sign of any other
planet. I am tabulating below for your convenience the stars constituting . There is yet
another way of finding out bad effects of transit If malefics should transit the natal star.
Remember also that this is different from the Rasiprocedure and its Vedha which have been
already explained. other than the Sun occupy in transit stars which are Vedha for the three
stars viz. th. For example. the th and the th. Similarly if the star tenanted by the Sun happens
to be Vedha for Karmastar i. In addition to the above if the Sun is also conjoined with a
malefic. it cannot give bad effects in case it occupies at the time its own house or its
exaltation. the natal one. In the same manner see also if other malefics. or with an eclipse.
So if the Sun transits the natalstar of a person. there will be no danger to life. Now you see
that this is another kind of Vedha different from the one indicated by the Saptasaiaka figure.

case of a planet supposed to produce excellent results but aspected by a malefic. You have
also to note if a planet in transit is in its debilitation.S amp.U.e.aj a W . there will be loss of
money. the th. If it does. the rd from it. . It is not enough if you simply note the basic rule
regarding good and bad houses for the planets in transit. then the effect is very bad. This is
not all. inimical house or combustion. th from the natal one. and the bad effects would be
greatly aggravated. the th. Even if a planet is found to be capable of yielding unfavourable
results on account of its transit. he is supposed to be seated on the face of the native.e. See
also if the natal star in any round synchronizes with the Suns entry into another Sign of the
zodiac. th or the rd all counted from the natal star. West be fear. The th and th stars counted
from the natal asterism are also called respectively Anujanma and Trijanma. If both malefics
and benefics transit such stars. . in the case of the Suns transit the natal star is called the
Face. In such a case too the result will be death. So while pronouncing judgment on Gocara
effects you should be extremely cautious. Bhadra Hasta P. The same effect will take place. It
may be death or great danger to life. There is yet another method of finding out the Gocara
effects from the limbs of the native occupied by the planets. This means that the th is the
natal star in the second round and the th in the third round. There are some more points to
be remembered in this connection You have understood now as to which planets give
unfavourable results and in which stars and signs. the bad effects will be nullified by the
aspect of a benefic on that planet. planetary war. then too there will be danger to life. In such
a condition even the good effects that are expected would not materialize. then there will be
only failure of undertakings. Similar is the effect in the case of one aspected by its enemy.

The former is called Purolatta and the latter Prsthalatta. his Latta will be on Magha. In the
case of Saturn it falls on the th star. the bad effects will be greatly enhanced. his Latta falls
on Satabhisak. th amp llth Saturn. In the case of the Sun the Latta on the th asterism
counted in the regular order from the one occupied by him at the time. So the Latta falls on
Punarvasu. In the case of Mercury it will fall on the th star counted backwards. This distance
is measured in the forward direction in some cases and in the opposite direction in the case

five g st. This means. CAN VENUS CAN BE MALEFIC WHAT IS THE ULTIMATE
STRENGTH OF A PLANET . It appears to be of foreign origin like Kriya for Aries. Phalguni. If
the natal star comes under the Latta of two or more planets. In the case of Mars the
Lattaforward falls on the rd star. If Venus is in Citra now. that a planet transiting a particular
asterism afflicts another asterism occurring at a particular distance. So if Rahu is transiting
the star P. Saturns the same as that of the Sun. Mars. he will have illness and sorrow as the
effect of this affliction. and to the latter the Moon. Venus and Rahu. ruin of relatives and
insecurity. Lastly the Latta of Rahu falls on the th asterism counted backwards. Now he is in
the asterism Mrgaslrsa. its Latta will be on Krttika. Mercurys fall and disaster. Mars utter
ruination. Though the general effect of Latta has been given as trouble. Jupiter and Saturn.
So the transit of Mercury becomes unfavourable to a person whose natal star is Punarvasu.
Mercury. his Latta will fall on Revati. Jupiters death.c th to th six d th to th five e th and th ltf

ill at this time. The effect of the Suns Latta is loss of ones entire effects. The idea is that if the
Sun is now passing through the star Uttara Phalgum. then his Latta would be on Punarvasu.

counting is done backwards. In the case of Jupiter the Latta forwardfalls on the th star. As he
is now in Purvasadha. th and th ltd th. So if Mercury be now in the star Hasta. To the former
group belong the Sun. In the case of Venus it falls on the fifth star counted backwards. as far
as transit is concerned. So if Dhanistha happens to be the natal star of a person. Tavuru for
Taurus etc. So if the Moon be in Rohini today. nd. yet different effects are given for the
different planets producing the Latta.
th. If the ascendant is in sidereal Pisces. if the planets are strong in a horoscope they give a
reversal effect during their mutual periods. Finally. Again. He asked me if there were

predominantly affect their expressions of an influence or effect. The foursource technique
that I use gives a fair measure of the strength of a planet. A planet likewise needs to be in a
positive. directional.. Nothing could be farther from the truth. diurnal cycles. b One may also
calculate the ashtavargajabala which is a point system which takes into account certain
positions from the natal placement of planets and is specially useful in transit delineations
according to ancient authorities in vedic astrology. This consideration of associating planets
is very important. cooperative soldiers. Even the bravest general cannot do much in the
battlefield if he is not surrounded by friendly. If the lords of the sign and the star in which
venus is placed in the chart are friendly towards venus and are in strong aspect or
association with it by means of conjugation or by forming a beneficial yoga combination with
it then that venus stands a better chance for fully expressing its effects. is in unfriendly
quarters is less likely to express its venom with full vengeance. In the hindu concept. How do
we determine a single numerical representative of a planets ultimate strength or total
strength A planet essentially has the following strengths a The classical baladetermination
which takes into account the placement of the planet. An interesting observation about venus
and saturn is that whenever one is going through the period of venus in saturn or vice versa.
Venus and Jupiter are usually considered as quotalways beneficquot whereas. the effects
would not come to pass in full fury/glory as the case may be. Next we should look at the sign
and star dispositors of the planet venus in this case. exaltation and angular strength and by
normalizing the individual ranges of strength also take into account the natural strengths of
the planets. but if the native is not going to be subjected to the dasa of the planet or of a
planet which is placed in the star of the planet. and in Chapter VIII here is what I use. The
rulers of the th. but one must take into account the following qualifiers when trying to
determine the benefic or malefic effect of a planet Which houses does the planet rule in a
given horoscope Here I must urge students to suspend their desire to be mathematically
precise and use the whole signasahouse method that I find useful and practical. enhanced or
weakened by the planets that it is invariably associated with. the whole sign of Pisces serves
as the first house regardless of the rising degree and the others follow aries being the
second house. A malefic planet which is weakened by lack of strong associations. the planet
might be a benefic or malefic with lots of butressing influences from other planets.
retrogression. By extension a weak venus and saturn would bestow a strong effect in their
mutual period. If jupiter rules one of those houses. Even the most effective leaders need their
ring of supportive and honest counsellors. filtered. malefic does not mean only in a
materialistic sense but also a spiritual sense. Many vedic and perhaps other astrologers buy
into the idea that any given planet can be either benefic or malefic. this dictum should not be
taken verbatim or we would not perform better than those interpretive astrology programs
The second question pertains to the issue of planetary strengths. the vargas. Most effects of
any given planet that we see are never pure but are modified. th. There still would be bhuktis
subperiods of these planets but those would be generally limited or contained by the effects
of the planet whose major period dasa one is running at the moment.. .This brief essay
addresses a friends questions.. mars and saturn are their polar opposites in always being
blamed to be the bad guys. th. A planet is always modified by the company it keeps. I am
certain that people who suffered sexscandals had a malefic venus in their charts. th then its
sting is reduced a bit but it still remains a malefic for that horoscope. An evil jupiter would
make one turn away from listening to good counsel provided by teachers and elders or even
incline him/her to black magic and other base procedures. so be it If the planet also rules a
benefic house st. th.
c We must also not ignore an important source of strength. Divide each sign into equal parts
of / degrees . but if it is evenly balanced roughly equally strong on all four counts. What is
important. because they would try to judge astrology through the narrow slit of scientific
method which works fine for physical things and physical sciences which deals with things
that can be measured. Find out in which ninth part each graha falls in the Rasi varga . as
always. Many such planets indicate a deficiency during early life or a genetic deficiency not
in a medical sense but in terms of childhood opportunities or the family background.A planet
that gains high total percent strength on these four counts must indeed be considered strong.
so we find that in the Navamsa the lagna is Aries. Sagittarius. A planet in the same sign in
the natal and navamsha chart is considered as strong as if it was in its own sign. is not in
determining how much strength in quantifiable terms these influences impart but when we
are looking at a chart we should make it a habit to include these factors in every analysis so
that these do not get ignored and result in inaccurate interpretation. of Jyotish. that would
indicate a deficiency in this otherwise strong planet. Capricorn the first /th division starts with
the sign the graha is in. Each varga has a particular method of construction based upon the
fundemental. There are at least other vargas from another Vedic system of astrology called
Jaimini. And after you have included all these into your interpretation would you be accurate
always No. or birth chart. really a combination of genes and environment if you want to get
technical. For moveable signs Aries. For example. the first /th division start with the th from
Scorpio. varga. divides the zodiac into equal portions of degrees each. Virgo. because there
must be other minor factors and who knows some major yet unknown ones that would throw
the monkey wrench in from time to time. and relates to a specific aspect of life. Cancer. If it is
strong in total strength but lacks exaltation strength. To construct the Navamsa chart. the

predictive tools. In the Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra. To make this more concrete. Now take
the bhava occupied by Moon and place a mark in the rd. These divisions sometimes cover
only one rasi. . That quotsomethingquot can be size. as their meanings are somewhat
ambigious. . we will discuss the graha balas first. some of which are mutually exclusive. The
midpoint of a bhava is treated as if it were a graha. The ninth house is a major influence that
indicates whether our dreams will ever become real The Graha And Bhava Balas amp
astakavarga A science must have a set of metrics. Bhavadipati the word adipati means ruler.
For example. Despite this negative commentary. and th bhavas from the bhava occupied by
Sun. the resulting sum is called the ashtakavarga of Sun. . rahu and Ketu do not. When all
the marks have been placed. Taking Sun as the reference point. Bhava Drishti this is the
aspectual strength drishti means aspect. add them up to obtain the ashtakavarga of Moon.
Since the bhava balas depend on the graha balas. Jyotish has many metrics which measure
the strength of a celestial body or region of space as in a house. or the odds of an event
occuring. Jyotish provides a way to quantify this strength for both grahas and bhavas. . and
hides the true meaning of this word. th. and the combined ashtakavarga of the seven primary
grahas. From lagna. we add up the marks in each bhava. Again. we can speak of the
ashtakavarga of each graha and lagna individually. lets consider the ashtakavarga of Sun.

The information below is taken from Bhava Balas There are types of bhava balas. Please
note the word graha which is often taken as the Sanskrit term for planet. as measured by a
probability. One of the most comprehensive systems is referred to as quotThe Graha And
Bhava Balasquot. ashtakavarga is described as a calculational method for those dull minds
currently living in the dark Kali Yuga world age. certain bhavas benefit. A bhava is
considered strong if the total number of shastiamsas exceeds . as measured by pounds.
After going through this procedure for each graha lagna. Nru human. . and th bhavas. th. The
Sanskrit word for strength is bala. the basic reference for Vedic Astrology based upon
Maharishi Parasara the ancient sage who founded Vedic Astrology. For each of the seven
grahas and lagna there is a set of bhavas from which a mark is to be placed. Note that in the
ashtakavarga of Sun. Nrurasyadi the rasis are divided into categories.one faces in the
current lifetime. the bhavas marked from lagna are different than those in the ashtakavarga
of Moon. and zero strength in the lagna. and from there. th. th. some of which are
abbreviated versions of larger systems. Chatushpada footed. although it also finds use in
natal chart interpretation as well. Details Ashtaka means . . This commentary also suggests
there is a deeper understanding upon which ashtakavarga is based that perhaps holds even
more profound knowledge. th. There are many such metric systems in Jyotish. The basic
principle is that from each grahas bhava. Jalachara aquatic. falling down and scraping your
knee might be considered undesirable. For the ashtakavarga of Moon. or measures. . The
strength given for the bhava balas is the shastiamsa/. Now take the Suns bhava and place a
mark in bhavas . . and Kitaka insect. and sometimes include halves of rasis. This system is
described below. For example. so we speak of the graha and bhava balas. The total bhava
balas is the sum of the above balas. we take bhavas . each graha and lagna has its own set
of special bhavas. There are many ways a graha and a house bhava can be strengthened or
weakened. . we again start with the lagna and place marks in the rd. or receive strength.
Although it is tempting to do so. Sun . we will avoid judgemental terms such as good/bad or
benefic/malefic. . as measured by meters. but not so if you found a gold coin as you were
getting up. Each category has a certain preferred direction at which it is most powerful. There
are many types of ashtakavarga. and refers to the primary grahas lagna which contribute to
the ashtakavarga calculations. which allow a judgement of how large quotsomethingquot is.
Nru rasis have maximum strength when in the th house. and th bhavas from there.
Ashtakavarga Overview Ashtakavarga is a system for assigning strength to grahas and
bhavas houses for use in transit gochara analysis. . . th. th.Saturn and lagna ascendant
participate in this system. and drishti values the total drishti of all the bhavas on a given
bhava is calculated. th. and and place a mark in each of these bhavas. This translation is
very simplistic. weight.
Sarva Ashtakavarga Sarva means sum or total. A controversy exists as whether or not to
add the contribution of the ashtakavarga of lagna. Sun Moon In some systems. Since Sun is
a malefic . more than is strong. Consider the natal chart show below. Refering to the
ashtakavarga of Sun. the sum of the sarva ashtakavargas over all bhavas is . Uses Of
Ashtakavarga One of the main uses of ashtakavarga is in transit analysis. we see that there
is only bindu in this bhava. Generally.Where these numbers come from or what this system
is based on is not generally known. with each chart sontaining the total nuber of marks.
Taking the values from the above example. one will be left with seven ashtakavrga charts. an
ashtakavarga chart for lagna is also prepared. This means that Suns influence during its
transit of Leo will be weak. This is generally not done in keeping with Parasara. and is not
used by most jyotishis we know. Excluding the ashtakavarga of lagna. Rah Lag Moo Sun
Natal Ven Chart Sat Mer Jup Ket Mar Suppose that Sun is currently transiting the th bhava of
Leo. called bindus. Sun transiting the th bhava may indicate problems at home. and sarva
ashtakavarga is the value arrived at in each bhava by adding the contributions from each
graha. there are differing opinions on this matter. less than bindus is weak. When all is said
and done. It is probably fair to say that this is a simplification of a deeper level of knowledge.
in each bhava. Partial Sarva . Some examples are shown below in the South Indian chart
format. but in this case the influence is not as pronounced as the astkavarga of Sun in this
bhava is only bindu. the partial sarva ashtakavarga Sun Moon only is shown below.
Nevertheless.
Grahas in signs where the sarva is between and inclusive have moderate effect . and while
judging planetary effects should take into account the strengths of the planets. If the sarva is
weak but the ashtakavarga of the graha of the sign it occupies is large or above. harmonic
divisional strengths and those due to occupancy of benefic and friendly or otherwise houses.
then its effect on the sign will be felt. directional. the actual sarva adds up the contributions
for all the grahas Sun . on the other hand. and what follows is a less than satisfying answer
this is one way of saying that the issue needs more research. might enable one to win the
jackpot. actually at a certain degree of the sign Table I. This quotpartialquot sarva calculation
is used here for illustrative purposes only. Grahas in signs where the sarva is below have
very little effect . This method. For the sake of convenience. the tables include only the

reasonably accurate estimates of planetary strengths by using the tables in this article. In

size of the graha ashtakavarga and sarva values. This enables one to fathom the qualitative
nature of planetary effects. therefore. However. How does ashtakavarga relate to the graha
and bhava balas . therefore. Take the above as guidelines. Since vedic astrology does not
take the transsaturnine planets into account. The graha and bhava balas. Grahas in signs
where the sarva exceeds have a strong effect Note that if a graha has moderate to strong

method of calculation. and therefore extensions of their meanings to present day socieities
are even less well understood. PLANETARY STRENGTH A MODIFIED APPROACH The
process of judging a horoscope primarily involves an analytical assessment and synthesis of
the qualities or attributes of the planets with those of the signs and houses. Vedic texts
attribute many sources of strength to planets. Ashtakavarga And The Graha And Bhava
Balas Ashtakavarga is a system for determining the strength of bhavas that is used mostly
for transit analysis. increasing linearly in strength from the point of debility to the point of
exaltation. then the effect is weak. the natural. As you interpret more charts and see for
yourself how the ashtakavarga correlates with life events. The lunar nodes. while if weak it
might bring in only a hundred dollar win. A brief description of the four determinants of
planetary strength follows Exaltation strength Table II Planets attain exaltation or maximum
power in certain signs. The other two sources of strength depend on the house in which the
planet is placed. rather than as absolute rules. A highly benefic combination might exist in a
horoscope but if the planets involved are weak. Two of these are based on the sign occupied
by the planet and its relationship with its sign dispositor the planet ruling the sign occupied by
it. This also means that very little work has been done in this area. One must not stop here. If
both are large. Four sources of strength are of great importance. could lie between and .
While the exact calculation of each of these strengths for all planets is tedious. for instance.
Table II provides a readyreckoner for determining the exaltation strength of a planet based
on its location in a sidereal sign ignoring the degree positions for the sake of convenience. If
both the ashtakavarga of the graha and the sarva are small. represent the lord of the sign
they are in and are always strong. are subject to a number of controversies in terms of how
some of the balas are calculated. as they are measures of strength as well This is a very
interesting question. therefore. as are the effects on transits. This reflects their natural or
intrinsic strength. then the effects will be barely perceptible. this it also affects the signs it
aspects. the quotsaferquot system to use as it has been more extensively tested and is
better understood. really takes into account five sources of strength. In vedic astrology the
determination of planetary strength is of vital importance while determining the intensity of
effects during the vimshottari planetary periods and in judging the numerous planetary
combinations or yogas. retrogressional. the graha can still have a strong influence on the
sign. there is very little documentation on how each bala is used in predictive analysis. Table
VI is used to convert these units into percentage values for uniformity of comparison.
I realize that this seemingly simplistic approach might arouse a lot of discontentment and
resistance from those who routinely use one of the several mathematically precise house
systems. with certain areas degrees of the even sign in the case of mercury virgo and the
odd signs in the case of venus. Angular strength. strong and is very strong. therefore tropical
longitudes must be converted to sidereal values. Directional strength. since mercury is not in
its own or moolatrikona sign. rd. Associational strength.. A planet which scores evenly on all

relationship of a planet with the lord of the sign dispositor it happens to be placed in a
horoscope. From Table I. we get a value of . jupiter and saturn. A planet which scores highly
on three sources of strength but is weak in any one source would appear to be very strong
but has weak spots which must be considered while examining its role in a nativity. Angular

This inherent relationship is based on the rulership of the dispositor from the moolatrikona of
the planet. it is temporally friendly. we see that mars is naturally neutral to mercury. Planets
are strong in certain directions houses and weak in the opposite houses. we have to
determine its relationship with mars ruler of scorpio.. again while using the whole signhouse
system. To illustrate the method of strength determination. Exaltation strength. being special
and called moolatrikona. Mercury is therefore in a friendly neutral . In the vedic system each
of the planets rules over signs. th. the entire gemini must be taken as the second house. th.
weaker in succedent houses and weakest in cadent houses. th or th sign from the planet.
Moolatrikona areas for sun and moon are in leo and cancer respectively Table I. Planets are
very strong in their moolatrikona areas. Planetary strength quantifies the force of expression
and does not alter the inherent qualitative nature benefic/malefic of the planet. these four
sources of strength are added and the corresponding percent strength is read from Table VI.

acquire a talent in one of these auxillary methods to the point where it becomes a primary. . .

exclude using this system for natal analysis is to throw away a very valuable tool. In addition.

inclined to recommend the stock. Many jyotishis apply these methods even when the birth
time is accurate in order to confirm the indications from the natal chart. . For example. . . . . . .
If classical wisdom can be relied upon. whereas. equal house division and Sripatis system
which is identical to the quadranttrisecting method after Porphyrii. it is an indication that
human conciousness is not just a local phenomena confined to individual people. It supports
unique systems of lunar progression and transits. one for the time of posting of the
quotunposedquot question querists coordinates and the other one for the time and place
when the email was read and analysed by the astrologer. the asterism that the moon is in at
the time of asking of the question and the ascendant rising at . one of the systems of
astrology practiced in India. Have a ball doing that folks Horary astrology was given a major
boost some decades ago by an Indian astrologer named Krishnamurthy who devised a
unique system based on the use of several interesting indicators such as planets ruling the
weekday. it would be taken as an indication to buy. The moment of formation of the question
in the querists mind is similar to conception. Some might argue that the time when the querry
was posted was the moment when the person was thinking intently about the issues involved
and perhaps a chart drawn for that moment might better reflect the outcome of the querry.
Parashari. which is Kanya Virgo. misrecorded or unavailable or forgotten birthdates in
countries where birth certificates are not issued or required. if you are in New York and you
get a call from Bombay. In order for prasna to work. We have heard that focussing too much
on prasna adversely affects ones ability to analyze natal charts. if a dollar bill happened to
blow by at the time of analysis. Repeating the exercise for say a dozen times or more would
hopefully give an estimate of which epoch works better. One way to test this would be
through what is known as quotmooka prushnaquot or quotunverbalized questionsquot The
client lets the astrologer know that there is a question and the astrologer figures out what it is
about A very interesting and stress. Here are some key points to keep in mind when doing a
prasna chart The chart is cast for the local time and location of the jyotishi. An experienced
prasna jyotishi will note the direction the querant comes from and any other noteable
occurances. an earth or accumulation rashi. but is a distributed phenomena as well. When
possible. As usual. the chart is cast for the local time and location of New York. when the
querant appears in person. such as the use of the sidereal zodiac divided into signs and
asterismal divisions or lunar mansions. need not make us throw up our hands in despair. as
a person would somehow know it was the right time to ask a question and get an answer
from Jyotish. In situations like these. Stated another way. HORARY ASTROLOGY AND
KRISHNAMURTHI PADDHATI KP Inaccurate or uncertain birthtimes. In the above example
of buying stock. rather than local a phenomena. but have no evidence to support or reject
this claim. also in the case of very old people or in the case of celebrity horoscopes and
situations where a birth time is hard to decide upon lost objects etc. the time at which the
astrologer reads a horary querry in an email or message on an online service would probably
be a better epoch for drawing the horary chart. attributed to the Aryans and their
descendents. its physical manifestation in the form of a spoken or written question is akin to
the quotmoment of birthquot By that token. A plethora of options and several methods for
casting and delineating horary charts exist in the various flavors of astrology that are
available around the globe. The rising degree represents the housemid and the three popular
house systems used are entire sign as house. If Guru were instead in Vrischika Scorpio or
the th bhava of loss. not the querant. we can use horary charts. you might be inclined to
advise aganist investing at that time. and techniques for measuring strengths of planets etc.
For example. aspects and the rest of the grahas need to be considered to get a complete
picture. with all the background noises and other distractions. often analyze the chart
outside. It recommends using a chart drawn for the moment when the querist client
approaches and poses the question to the astrologer or when the question is received by the
latter. The system relies heavily on planetary associations and combinations known as
yogas. We are told that Indian jyotishis will. Conciuosness would thererfore be seen as a
shared. These charts are generally drawn for the moment when a question is asked and the
chart then is utilized for studying and analyzing the specific situation or event that forms the
basis of the question. for timing of events. verify the prasna indications with the natal chart. is
somewhat similar to classical western astrology in the symbology and building blocks used.to
the th bhava. with some differences as well. it must indicate that there exists a connection
between human conciousness and the rest of the universe.provoking exercise Two charts
can then be drawn for each querry. The vedic system is heavily lunar in its orientation. It is
also important to look at the natal chart of the querant for confirmation. rather than the time of
posting of the message/email. The moment of transfer of the information to the astrologer is
the key epoch. the recommendations are clear. Be aware of your surroundings when doing a
prasna chart.
The success or failure of the undertaking then would be indicated by the mutual agreement
or disagreement between the planets. spouse . venus Mystery/intrigue . stars and subs of the
rising degree ascendant and the moon. retrograde planets and . the nature of the involved
signs and planets gives a clue about the speed with which the issue would progress to a
culmination. service/working for others .that instant. in addtion to transits of the significant
planets and stars for estimating the timing. any beneficial combinations yogas between
relevant planets and the strength of the planets are considered. Krishnamurthy gave
numerous examples of things such as longdistance phone calls. The planets in both cases
are calculated for the moment of making the querry. Situations where the indicators are
fewer and clear. before direct dialing became available.. spirituality . one had to place a call
and then wait and wait and wait. its situation in the horary horoscope is examined and basing
on the postions and the mutual relationship between the star and sublords. pets/animals ..
Income . Children .. starlord one per deg min and a starsublord variable dimensions. A client
providing a number that was outside this range was told that the venture would not be a
success Through KP. .. The system was claimed as capable of providing highly accurate
readings and Krishnamurthy acknowledged having received the method in the form of a
divine inspiration.. Fixed signs. whereas. Love affairs . fame/profession .. success or failure
is assessed. Siblings . th or th from the house under examination. moreover. that of the role
of asterisms in chart analysis and particularly by refining the use and improving the
usefulness of the vimshottary dasha system of timing. there is usually reason to believe that
the issue is riddled with problems. Home. Expenditure . he often asked clients to provide a

relationship to the conjunction. because the planets approach each other and in the future
the aspect will be exact. if you use them I would advice an orb of degrees. but so are the
yogas. because of this there will come a time when the aspect will be exact probably when
the Moon has reached degrees Taurus. This is an overview of the orbs of influence Sun
degrees. Maybe in the past there have been positive developments but not much new
developments are indicated. because the Moon is seperating from Saturn.. Neptune and
Pluto are not used. Yoga and aspect are beneficial. Planets which are / signs or / signs from
each other can never have an aspect. An example Let us say we have the Moon at degrees
Taurus and Saturn and degrees Capricorn. then also some results may be anticipated. For

YOGAS BETWEEN PLANETS For planets to make a yoga in Tajika astrology they should
make an aspect. It is interesting to know that this system was also used in Medieval Western
Astrology. This is a malefic aspect. the results will not be reached easily and may be
disappointing. Some authors feel that if the orb is less than degree developments are
possible. An example for the Sun and the Moon to have an aspect the maximum orb should

moving planet has a greater longitude than a slower moving planet. However. Saturn

In vedic astrology, the third and fifth houses share certain common properties. Likewise, both
the eighth and the third houses must be studied when examining ones longevity Before we
get deeper into this, a brief refresher on the houses in a vedic chart might be in order. Vedic
astrologers consider either the entire sign as one house or utilize the equal house division.
Unlike tropical astrology, which considers the cusps and rising degree as the beginning of a

Unfortunately, many of the students of vedic astrology get so tangled in the skeins of
umpteen divisional varga charts, mathematical derivatives and a variety of dasha and transit
systems, that they lose sight of the fact that the rashi chart forms the prime basis of all
delineations and everything else is really the icing. Utilizing the bhavatabhavam principle
gives us a fresh and very effective way of looking at the good old hohum sign chart. Some
interesting relationships emerge when viewing a chart from this new perspective For
instance, note that the first house is unique, because no other house in the chart can serve
as its representative or be its secondary indicator. The first house counted from the first can
be none other than the first house However, the first house happens to be the seventh from
the seventh house. Anything that connects these two houses has my unwavering support
And while we are talking about spouses, let us not forget that the fourth mother from the
fourth house happens to be the seventh Some spouses might carry this a bit too far, but in
many cases male nativities, obviously, anecdotal evidence exists that such is indeed true. It
certainly casts a new light on the very interesting relationship that often exists between the

ninth generally showing that which has already fructified, thus reflecting a measure of our
luck or destiny, while the fifth indicates our ideal course on the karmic path, the distant future
that we can create, and our tasks during this life time. However, these boundaries are not
sharp. The fifth house is also considered by some as an indicator of poorvapunya, especially
in the matter of having good children or not. Poorvapunya refers to good deeds done by the
individual in past births. A strong and beneficiallydisposed fifth house indicates one who has
a good and clean past record and by virtue of that, is likely to stay true to the righteous path
ahead. The eleventh house shows our gains, and earnings and we know that our luck ninth
does have more than a modicum of say in that matter The ninth, you shall notice as you

illustrates is that the more the numbers of planetary indicators signifying an effect. but it is
not something that will not come to pass. it demonstrates that the twelfth lord and the
badhaka. mercury. From that shortsighted vantage point. and there is the undeniably vital
importance of the product of the eleventh house in helping us carry out our daily affairs. effort
becomes unnecessary and everything tends to take care of itself They remind us further that
time is an illusion and. and the twelfth rules over our losses. does tend to keep one a bit soft.

of Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra. This approach to conjunction treats the effect of grahas in a

drishtis. of any graha with its natal counterpart. or create some obstructions with sibling

understand from this that it is the period in which that planet exercises its influence solely on
account of its condition i. long journeys. Astrology helps us in probing the mysterious working
of the Law of Karma. therefore. th and th. capricorn. generally indicates delays rather than
total denials in the fructification of an effect. this being a form of natal lunar progression. This
is called the method of timing certain events in the life of an individual. As I have stated
elsewhere Astrology is not an ordinary science. The th house is also badhaka house for fixed
signs. it would also affect other indications governed by the th house. These planets are also
natural benefics and hence their badhaka nature is expressed mildly. therefore. Actions can
be directed to these areas in order to discharge ones accumulated spiritual dues and to

subperiods of even malefics will maintain and further the Rajayoga. exaltation or the like will
ward off the Aristas in his Dasa. though the Antardasalord may be strong. Take the Bhava of
that relation and note the planet that occupies the th house from that Bhava. You cannot
expect much from a weak Dasanatha. the impending danger will be averted. At the end of
the Dasa there will be miseries. ii After this the period of the Moon for years. You know the
relatives signified by the various Bhavas. years and that this is distributed among the nine
planets. effects of Rajayoga will be experienced in the subperiods of the concerned
significators or Karakas. An understanding of that should help you in ascertaining the
condition or Dasa of the individual concerned.and calamitous if their positions are mutually
hostile. provided there is no benefic aspect. while that of one proceeding from its depression
is called Arohint or Ascending. subperiod. iv lord of the decanate of the same house. of Rahu

planets See page . In the subperiod of Saturn in the main Easa of Mars there is some sort of
danger to life. yet its. quarrels with wicked fellows and general physical debility. features. ii

a planet that is conjoined with Rahu. The period or Dasa of a planet that has fallen from its
highest exaltation is termed Avarohint or Descending. ones. The mutual relationship between
a Dasanatha and the lord of a subDasa must also be harmonious for good effects to be
reaped. still if the planet at the commencement of his Dasa is strong. a man who is fond of
sweets at one time prefers pungent things at another period. vii Then that of Mercury for
years. iii lord of that house. humours etc. the special effects of the Bhava. Even though a
planet may be combust. viii Then that of Ketufor years. that of a planet which occupies a
friendly house or exaltation in Sign or Amsa becomes Madhyd or Middling. For example.
What would be the effects of this period They would be pretty dangerous. So too a victorious
planet or one who is conjoined with benefics or one who occupies own house. aspected by
benefics or situated in benefic or Adhimitra Vargas. and v the lord of the sign occupied by
Mandi. Similarly a person who was lean in the beginning becomes stout at a later stage. For.
the native will be addicted to forbidden acts. of one posited in the sign or Amsa belonging to
its enemy or debilitation is called Adhama or Worst. and at the end of that Dasa one may
even expect his exit from the world.. though apparently very good. Similarly during the Dasa
of a planet that is inimical to the lord of the Lagna or the CandraLagna. provided it occupies
an auspicious house Bhava and Amsa i. If the major period of a yogakaraka planet is in
progress. Even though a planet may be expected to take away the natives life during his
Dasa. You know that people sometimes change their taste. Then sets in the subperiod of
another malefic. The Dasas and Apaharas or Bhuktis of the following planets. should not be
in the th. The Dasas operate as follows i The Suns major period of years for the natal stars
already mentioned in the above chapter. will bring about great sufferings i One posited in the
th house. he will be forsaken by his kith and kin. both natal. troubles from enemies.
depressed or posited in an inimical sign. profession appropriate to it. However the order of
the Dasas or Major and Subperiods of the nine planets is not the same as that of the week
days with Rahu and Ketu added at the end. In the case of subperiods. through which the
subject is passing as a result of his past Karma that is suggested by the planetary condition.
iii Then that of Mars or Mangala for years. the strength of the lord of the main Dasa is the
very foundation on which is built the edifice of life with its ups and downs. th or th house from
the Dasanatha.e. Period Dasa will yield mixed effects generally and produce good effects
especially in the latter half. The measure of these things depends on the strength of the
planet concerned. ix Lastly that of Sukra or Venus for years. I have also explained in chapter
V that under the Ududasa system the span of human life is. and Rasi occupied or aspected
by it and the effects of the special Yogas produced by it.

Sun is well placed. especially if the planet is afflictelt or ill placed. favour of elders or
teachers. . the results will be very good. His Dasa will be excellent if Mars is posited in his
exaltation. wife. or when the same planet comes to the Saptavarga Signs Rasi. When he is
eclipsed or posited in debilitation Amsa or in the th house. . ornaments. or the rd. facing
upwards and in the th or I th house. quarrel with ones own sons. then one is likely to have
greater troubles such as quarrels. severe sufferings of wife and children. So their periods are
likely to produce evil effects at least at the end. . th. You can conclude from this that results
will not be favourable when the Moon passes through the rest. of the Lagna. In Gemini Ij
gives many wives and children. loss of wealth and affliction from wind diseases. Similarly if
he is in Vargottamamsa. sickness among ones kinsmen. if she is both weak and afflicted.

arts as well as in pleasant art humorous talks. and rich. Mars in Aries. the outcome is likely to
be very unfavourable. Venus occupying his own house identical with the th from the Lagna

counted from the natal Moon the lord of Dasa in transit comes to occupy. helping others. if a
planet is utterly spoilt at birth. sudden royal displeasure i. boiling temper. fighting or litigation.

During that period the effects will be similar to those of ordinary transits. victories. provided
the concerned planet is in an auspicious house and Amsa and not in the th or llth house or
Amsa. scents and tasty dishes. So too you can know as to which particular day or days will
be good or bad during a Dasa When the Moon in transit passes through a Sign owned by a
friend of the Dasalord. In Leo one becomes mayor ofi city. One will also have quarrels with
the wicked. kinsmen and elders. trouble from the rulers. acquisition of wealth. So too is the
period of one that occupies an Amsa belonging to an eclipsed planet. the exaltation of the
latter or the th house. For. he would bring about the subjects death at the end of the Dasa in
spite of his being the lord of the ascendant. its Dasa cannot yield splendid results. causes
throat complaints and debts. the period will prove beneficial. he will have trouble from fire
and beasts. The Dasa of a planet whose Navamsa belongs to a malefic will create obstacles
to education in boyhood. good results will be experienced.e. nd or th. clothes. wanderings.
Mercury Generally Budha causes in his period the arrival of friends. Effects of Dasas The
general effects of the Suns major period are the following One will acquire wealth by means
of cruel deeds. eloquent speeches. humours are also indicated. landshorses. its major period
may prove fatal to that relative. her Dasa will bestow excellent benefits such as mental peace
and all round success. wisdom and two mothers. the one occupied by the Sun. wet lands.
There will be ailments caused by vitiation of bile and blood. from kings and through fighting.
Hora etc. while in Scorpio and Sagittarius good results. Virgo and Sagittarius. and Leo
produces mixed results. In Taurus he is bad for th mother. happiness. and loss of servants
and wealth. deceits and various cruel deeds. There is another way of timing the fruition of a
period on the basis of the planets transit When the lord of the Dasa in transit comes to the
ascendant. eulogy of sholars. but will wander in other countries and hay little wealth and
