Pedigree Practice with the Royal Family
Queen Victoria of England ruled the United Kingdom from 1837 until 1901. She and her
husband had 9 children who married into other royal families around the world. She
introduced the mutant gene for hemophilia into the royal family. Hemophilia is a
genetic disorder that makes it hard for a person’s blood to clot. This means a person with
hemophilia will bleed for a lot longer than a normal person when they get hurt. It is a
recessive X-linked disorder.
Please answer the following questions in your ISN:
Which of Victoria’s sons had hemophilia?
List Queen Victoria’s grandchildren who had hemophilia:
Do any women shown above have hemophilia?
Draw a Punnett square to show Queen Victoria and her husband Albert. Use
X=normal, XH=hemophilia gene, and Y
5. Imagine that Tatiana, daughter of Empress Alexandra of Russia, had hemophilia. Can
we decide whether Tatiana’s father had hemophilia? Why or why not?
6. Draw a pedigree using the following information (Hint: draw a Punnett square for the
parents!):
a. A man with hemophilia married a woman without it
b. They had 2 daughters and 2 sons
