MOTION
Force – The ability to cause a
change in a state of motion of an
object (Vector)
The only thing that can cause an
object to accelerate is a Force
An object at rest will remain at rest and an
object in motion will maintain a constant
velocity unless acted upon by a net external
force
Law of Inertia – The tendency of an object to
resist a change in motion
∑F = ma
For every action force there is an
equal and opposite reaction force
There is no such thing as a lone
force, all forces come in pairs
 3 people push on a boat that is 752 kg. The boat floats next
to a dock. Each of the people push on the boat with 80.5N
of force parallel to the dock.
(A) What is the acceleration of the boat if they all push in
the eastern direction?
(B) What is the magnitude and direction of the boat’s
acceleration if 2 of the people push in the west direction
and one of the people push toward the east?
