Depression and Openings
1.
fissure - cleft-like opening between adjacent parts of bones through which vessels
& nerves pass
2.
foramen - hole through which blood vessels, nerves, ligaments can pass
3.
meatus - tunnel-like passageway through a bone
4.
sinus - cavity within a bone with narrow opening
5.
sulcus - groove or depression that accommodates a soft structure such as vessels,
nerve, tendon
6.
fossa - depression in/on a bone; generally at a joint
7.
process - prominent projection or point of attachment
Articular Process
1.
condyle - large, rounded articular (joint) prominence
2.
head - rounded articular projection supported by a more constricted portion of a
bone (neck)
3.
facet - smooth, flat surface on a bone

Remember that for every superior part there is always an inferior
Contribution of bones that make the anterior part of the Orbit (Eye)
Maxilla, Zygomatic, Frontal
Contribution of bones that make the posterior part of the Orbit (Eye)
Lacrimal, Ethmoid, and Sphenoid
Foramens: Infraorbital Foramen
Grooves: Infraorbital Groove
Canals: Optic Canal
Notches: Supraorbital Notch
Fissures: Superior Orbital Fissure

Best Way to Learn the Openings is from Posterior to Anterior
Second is applying the terminology and shape
Third divide the opening into two section 4 (occipital and temporal) and 5 (sphenoid)
1 Foramen Magnum – magnum meaning large in size, is the largest opening (Magnum
Condom)
2 Hypoglossal Canal – Hypo =below, Glossal= tongue, to make something glossy you have
to lick it!!!
3 Jugular Foramen – looks like it shares both Occipital and Temporal bones
4 Internal Acoustic Meatus – clearly visible on the Temporal bone
Fresh Homemade Juice Is-Awesome
5 Foramen Lacerum – First opening after Temporal, is like going over a ridge and then you
fall into the hole
6 Foramen Spinosum – looks like it shares both Temporal and Sphenoid bones
7 Foramen Ovale – look at shape, looks like an oval and is the biggest opening in the
Sphenoid
8 Foramen Rotundum – Smallest opening on the Sphenoid bone
9 Optic Canal – since the eyes are the most anterior opening in the cranium
Lemonade, Strawberry, Orange, Raspberry, Or-Cramberry
