2016-17 AP U.S. History Summer Assignments:
Fitzgerald, Pogatchnik, Snyder
Welcome to AP U.S. History. By enrolling in this course you are accepting the responsibility and the
workload of a college freshman. In this class you will be expected to read a college level textbook, analyze
primary documents, and write cogently.
The major emphasis of this class is to prepare you for the APUSH exam in May 2017, which gives you an
opportunity to earn college credit as well as show universities the level of academic rigor you opted for as a
tenth grader. You will learn the importance of taking notes over what you read, you will learn how to identify
critical information, you will learn how to analyze events to determine their significance in U.S. history, and
you will learn how to write a college essay. In essence, you will learn how to think, write, and breathe in an
intellectually stimulating, challenging, and rewarding level.
Words to the wise: Developing academic discipline especially as it comes to time management will serve you
well in APUSH. Last minute efforts reflect a lack of planning, discipline, and resolve. Do yourself a favor;
break this assignment into chunks, schedule specific work times and completion deadlines. You will be proud
of your effort and make a great first impression on your APUSH teacher.
Assignment (due: 1st day of school): September 6, 2016
1. Read chapters 1-3 in “Give Me Liberty!” by Eric Foner (including chapter introductions, primary
documents within each chapter)
2. Take handwritten Cornell notes based on the chapter study guides.
3. Bring these handwritten Cornell notes to class and be prepared to use them for an open notes exam the first
week of school.
Final Words of Wisdom: Students who understand politics, economics, & social struggles today have a better
understanding of politics from the past.
Recommendations: Discuss APUSH content with lots of people.
If you don’t already read the newspaper, you should start!
Discuss current events with your parents and friends. Plan your summer and get started this week!
