Sentence Expansion
Explanation:
Sentence Expansion is a tool used to help students develop their writing skills and or
summarize information. Students learn to move from simple to compound sentences full
of details. Comprehension is also increased when students use Sentence Expansion to
write about what they have read.

· To help students eliminate use of the same old boring words
· When students are learning about the parts of speech and where to
place words
· Expand a sentence to summarize the main character in a story.
Ideas:
· Add more detail to a sentence using adjectives and pronouns.
· Expand a sentence to show me that you have learned the parts of a
cell.
What does it look like?
How to use this strategy:
Ask students to expand (add to) the sentence one word at a time. Each new word should
add insight and meaning to a plain sentence. The sentence must be true to the
information read and must begin to re-tell the story read to check for comprehension.
