ABC Order
Write out your spelling words once
as given and then once in
alphabetical order
Forward-Backward
Write out each word forward and
then backward
Ex: spelling - gnilleps
Vowels & Consonants
Rewrite your spelling words,
Writing consonants in blue and
Vowels in red.
Least to Greatest
Write your spelling words from the
shortest word to the longest word.
3 Times Each
Write each word 3 times:
1st time printed
2nd time cursive
3rd time colored
Spelling Syllables
Classify the words according to
number of syllables and show the
syllable division. (Ex: spell/ing)
Use a dictionary for help.
Bubble Letter Words
Write each spelling word using
bubble letters. When finished,
color in and decorate each word.
Make Your Own
Create an activity! Practice your
spelling words your own way. Be
sure to explain what you did so that
I can understand what you did.
Spelling Practice Test
Have an adult quiz you on the
week’s words. Correct it. Any
missed words must be written in a
sentence and an adult must sign
your paper.
Word Search Words
Make a word search on graph paper
using all of your spelling words.
Don’t forget to write a list of the
words to be searched for.
Flashy Words
Make a set of flashcards for
studying your words. Put them in
an envelope or sandwich bag and
staple them to your other papers.

Rich Words
Write out your spelling words and
then find the value of each of your
spelling words.
(a=$.0l, b=$.02, etc.)
Ex: spelling = $0.94
Riddle Me This
Select 10 of your words. Write a
riddle for each one. Don’t forget to
add the answer to your riddles.
Ex: I cry when I’m hungry. I wear
diapers. I am cute. What am I?
(Answer: baby)
Spelling Classification
Classify the words according to the
part of speech (noun, verb,
adjective, etc.)
Doubled-Up Sentences
Use each word in a meaningful
sentence (two spelling words per
sentence). Be sure to underline or
highlight the spelling words.
Spell Me A Story
Write an original story using all of
your spelling words. Underline or
highlight spelling words.
Dictionary Words
Write each word and its dictionary
definition.
Crossword Spelling
Write word clues and then make a
crossword puzzle on graph paper
using all of your words.
Spelling Collage
Cut all of your spelling words out
of magazines or newspapers and
make a collage.
Write tongue twisters using each of
your spelling words.
Example: Spelling word: pretty
Tongue twister: Pretty Paula picks
pansies playfully.
Use ½ of your spelling words to
write fact sentences (facts can be
proven). Use the other ½ of your
spelling words to write opinion
sentences (cannot be proven).
Write a song or rap with all the
spelling words. Underline the
spelling words. Be creative!
Write a poem using the spelling
words. You may choose any type
of poem. Underline the words and
be creative!
