Microscope Facts
A compound microscope, which is the most widely used type of microscope, uses two lens systems: 1. objective lens 2. ocular (eyepiece) lens When the image reaches the observer's eye, it appears inverted or upside down. This inversion is a result of the path of the light rays, which ultimately transfer the image to the eye. *When looking through the eyepiece (ocular) of a microscope, sometimes the image is not centered or even in the field of view (circle of light). When you are seeing an object through the eyepieces of a compound microscope, the image that you are actually seeing is being magnified twice: by the eyepieces AND the objective lens you are using to view an object. To figure the total magnification of an image that you are viewing through the microscope is really quite simple. To get the total magnification take the power of the objective (4X, 10X, 40x) and multiply by the power of the eyepiece, usually 10X. Total Magnification of 40X
