AI is becoming the basic technology for all industries. Director Tsujii of AIST, a research center that has been established for the development of AI, which is the core of Japan’s competitiveness in future, will discuss the current status of AI and the prospects for its future. 「 New Vehicle-Manufacturing Advancing Together with Machine Tool Industry」 Executive General Manager, Unit Production Engineering Field, Power Train Company, Toyota Motor Corporation Yoshihito Kondo Through MIRAI and Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, Toyota keeps exploring the new ways of car manufacturing. He will discuss how the machine tool industry and the auto industry have been built on past collaborations and works together to foster innovation in manufacturing. 「 The Global Economy and the Near Future Business Management of the Manufacturing Industry」 Professor, the Faculty of International Social Sciences, Gakushuin University and Emeritus Professor, The University of Tokyo Motoshige Itoh Professor Itoh, well known for his work in many platforms, will share his insights on the strategy for Japan’s manufacturing industry, which faces new challenges such as IoT and connected factories. 「 Relationships between CFRP and Machine Tools: Processing and Application of CFRP」 Designated Professor of Nagoya University, SAMPE Global President Takashi Ishikawa Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) is light weight yet strong and durable, so it has been increasingly used for the aircraft and energy sectors such as wind turbines and autos. This lecture examines the two-way relations between CFRP and Machine Tools, which is the role of machine tools in making CFRP and the application of CFRP on machine tools. 「 A Japanese contribution to Smart Manufacturing”IV(I Industrial Valu Chain Initiative)"」 IVI is a network of mainly manufacturing companies to develop a mechanism to achieve connected factories. Based on the concept of “loose standards”, IVI looks at the Japanese version of Industry 4.0 which originates from humans. The lecture introduces the activity of IVI. 「 Metal Spinning: A relentless challenge to produce highly intricate products involving a display of skill」 Special Exhibits Metal spinning or hera-shibori is a metal sheet-processing technique. A disc-shaped metal is fixed on the rotating lathe and formed into the final share with a special tool called “hera”. This technique can be used to make products from as small as a few mm to as big as 4m. This sophisticated technique comes from a relentless challenge. In the Special Exhibits, “Let’s do it,” the spirit of monozukuri of Kitajima Shibori Seisakusho Co., Ltd. will be introduced where visitors can learn how the passion for monozukuri helped to create the most difficult products and nurture future art masters. A program for hands-on experience is taking place concurrently. <Cooperation: Kitajima Shibori Seisakusho Co., Ltd.> East Hall 7, New East Exhibition Hall Special Exhibits The 17th IMEC Oral Session November 20 (Sun.) 9:10-17:15 November 21 (Mon.) 9:00-17:30 「 Fukui eyeglasses: A global brand created by combining craftsmanship and machine tool technology」 Fukui has more than a 90% share of eyeglass frames in Japan. They are the first group who invented eyeglasses created from titanium that are both light weight and durable. Fukui’s high quality eyeglasses attract global attention and in 2007, they established a consolidated local brand, “THE291”, and are promoting their advanced technology and innovative eyeglasses to the world. Recently, the know-how of titanium processing is used for other areas such as healthcare and electric appliances. So the passion for eyeglasses is now spreading to other sectors. The Special Exhibit presents Fukui’s challenge of monozukuri through which they have developed an over 100-year old global brand and introduces the excellent technology and craftsmanship and how machine tools have helped their endeavors. <Cooperation: Fukui Optical Association> 「 Main Theme: Monozukuri Innovation to Create the Future(tentative)」 A wide range of lectures ranging from Japan’s advanced manufacturing in the auto, railway and space industries to the latest machine tools and production and processing technologies will be held.
