Regarding the IEO
Web IEO, Web Baleares-IEO
Is a Public Research Center (OPI) that was founded in 1914.
Is dedicated to the marine science research, mainly concerning the
scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of the fishing
resources and the marine environment.
Its budget is over the 65 million Euros and has a large geographic cover
and important facilities: 10 Oceanografic Centers (Baleares, Murcia
and Malaga along the Mediterranean coast), 6 important R/Vs,
(Cornide de Saavedra, 68 m, Ramón Margalef and Ángeles Alvariño,
46 m) and more than 20 boats.
It counts on an approximated group of 700 people, of whom 80% are
researchers and technicians.

IEO Mediterranean monitoring
RADMED (RADiales del MEDiterráneo)
Coordinator: José Luis López Jurado ([email protected])
Web RADMED
The IEO carries out four cruises per year covering a large set of
oceanographic stations along the Spanish Mediterranean and are
distributed in transects perpendicular to the coast (some since
1992). The basic strategy is to explore the different areas where
differences in the large scale oceanographic conditions could be
expected.
The sampling includes: T, S, DO, chl_a, inorganic nutrients, phyto and
zooplankton abundance and taxonomic composition. Actually, other
variables of key importance: pH, Total Inorganic Carbon, nitrous
oxide and methane.

IBAMar 2.0 Data Base
Coordinator: José Luis López Jurado ([email protected])
A new database is being developed with the oceanographic data
obtained from cruises from 1974 until 2010 in Western
Mediterranean waters. We compiled data from 27 research
projects within 134 oceanographic surveys developed by the COBIEO
In IBAMar 2.0 database are included: P, T, S, DO, turbidity, chl-a and
nutrients. The data were obtained in casts from a CTD in addition
to carrousel sampling with Niskin bottles (40.8%), only with a CTD
(49.1 %) or discrete Niskin bottle samples (10.1%). In 97.0% of
cases CTD was a Seabird-CTD with the same post-processing
criteria.
Quality control on each variable has been applied following Conkright
[1] and Fichaut [2].

IEO Mediterranean Group on
Climate Change
Coordinator: Manolo Vargas Yáñez ([email protected])
Web MGCC
The main objective of this group is
to improve our knowledge about the
health state and functioning of the
Mediterranean
waters.
Special
attention is paid to the possible
effects of climate change and the
alterations that it could induce in
the
Mediterranean
marine
environment.
In the MGCC web there is
information on the IEO monitoring
systems. Statistics and processed
data are also accessible.

Southern European Seas
Web PERSEUS,
Funded by the EU under FP7 Theme “Oceans for Tomorrow
Total project funding: 13 M de €
Duration: 2012-2015
PERSEUS is a research project that assesses the dual impact of human
activity and natural pressures on the Mediterranean and Black Seas.
PERSEUS merges natural and socio-economic sciences to predict
the long-term effects of these pressures on marine ecosystems.
The project aims to design an effective and innovative research
governance framework, which will provide the basis for policymakers
to turn back the tide on marine life degradation.

observing capacities.
West Mediterranean Coordinator: Javier Ruiz (CSIC)
Description of work (related with this workshop):
… a strong coordination will be established with programs and organisations such as
the national systems MOOSE in France, POSEIDON in Greece and SOCIB in
Spain, the operational networks MOON/MedGOOS in the Mediterranean and
BS-GOOS in the Black Sea, as well as European initiatives such as the
operational GMES (Marine Core Service implemented by MyOcean) and other
EU projects such as Euro-Argo, EuroSITES, JERICO etc.

PERSEUS-IEO Web IEO-PERSEUS
IEO coordinator: Patricia Reglero ([email protected])
Role in PERSEUS: IEO will participate in WP1, WP3 and WP4.
Main contributions include;
i)
analysis of small pelagic fish dynamics and human pressure on fish
populations; both in terms of recruitment drivers at basin scale and
population dynamics in relation to the pelagic ecosystem (WP1 and
WP4)
ii) analysis of hydrodynamic properties of Mediterranean waters (WP1),
including biogeochemical dynamics. IEO participation includes the
use of available large datasets, the use of modelling techniques
that allow incorporating existing data and synthesizing current
assumptions, and the improvement of existing observation systems
towards a general Mediterranean observation system (WP3).

Related with this workshop objectives:
WP1-Subtask 1.3.1 ALBOREX: Alboran Sea - Strait of Gibraltar
Experiment.
IEO
Responsible:
Jesús
Mercado
([email protected])
Alboran Sea plays a crucial role in the overall Mediterranean dynamics,
acting as its interface with the Atlantic Ocean. The role of interbasin material fluxes, the influence of shelf seas on the open sea,
the lower trophic level biochemical interactions and productivity,
and the inter-basin transfer of non- indigenous species and fish will
be studied through data collection and analyses in the Strait of
Gibraltar, along the Atlantic jet and in the Alboran Sea. This will
also include an estimation of the deep outflow from the
Mediterranean to the world ocean, for chemicals such as
macronutrients or anthropogenic carbon.
WP3- Subtask 3.2.3 R/V repeated monitoring; increase spatiotemporal resolution and support upgrade/ expand existing
surveys.
