But we communicate with much more than words. In fact, research shows that the majority of our communication is nonverbal. Nonverbal communication, or body language, includes our facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, posture, and even the tone of our voice. Eyes: Itch/Rub—difficulty “seeing” what you are saying; draw/paint me a picture Neck: Rub/stretch—I don’t want to follow or see new idea resolve concerns Head: Small itch—need more information Large itch—too much information Ears: Itch/tug—I don’t understand; Repeat your comment Shoulders: Rub/scratch—not taking on responsibility; Repeat/resolve concerns Hands: Behind back—hiding, withholding; In Pockets—hiding, withholding; Crossed in front—comfort; gates On hips—challenging, defending; Folded arms—thinking, protecting Legs: Represent balance, support, strength Four Foundational Moves What you push, goes away. What you pull, comes toward you. What you hold down, stays down. What you lift, grows. Feet: Represent direction of intention/ thinking Split feet—split thinking Both feet aligned—clear direction Powerful Communication Reading body language is a skill to find ______________ and _________________. To begin reading body language, I must remove _______________ and see movements as _________________. While you are speaking, the brain prepares and organizes _____ words per minute to say. At the last moment, our consciousness filters this down to ______ words. As a person speaks, there are an average of _____ words that are held back. These hidden words show up in _________ _________________. Conscious Conscious Subconscious Subconscious Nonverbal Cues Body Nonverbal communication cues can play five roles: Repetition: Substitution: Complementing: Accenting: Contradiction: They can repeat the message a person is making verbally. They can substitute for a verbal message. For example, a person's eyes can often convey a far more vivid message than wordsand often do. They may add to or complement a verbal message. A boss who pats a person on the back in addition to giving praise can increase the impact of the message. They may accent or underline a verbal message. Pounding the table, for example, can underline a message. They can contradict the message an individual is trying to convey. 801.987.3996 ● [email protected] ● 3KeyElements.com ● © 2010-2015 © 2010-2016 • Offi[email protected] • 3KeyElements.com • 801.987.3996 CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL Ann Washburn Mentor Trainer Keynote Speaker Body Language Expert Ann is a dynamic and inspiring Mentor, Trainer, Keynote Speaker and Body Language Expert for 3 Key Elements, Inc.
