SPCA of Martinsville and Henry County - Shelley Frith Drane Adoption Center December 2016
SPCA Holiday Tradition Continues
In 1975, the Martinsville Henry County SPCA began a tradition of Christmas stockings to
memorialize beloved pets throughout the community. The first tree to house the stockings
was placed at the Martinsville Library with Senator Virgil Goode hanging the first stocking of
the program. Each stocking is handmade by volunteers in their favorite crafting design.
Over the years, the SPCA has placed trees at numerous locations throughout the community. Grocery stores, banks, veterinary clinics, libraries and the SPCA itself have all hosted
these memorial Christmas trees. In the 1990’s, two volunteers, Pauline Wells and Alice Ann
Blevins, handmade the tree skirts and tree-top stockings that are still in use today.
This wonderful program allows community members to remember or honor pets both living
and deceased. Participants can simply add the name of a pet to a stocking, they can submit a
photo to be hung with the stocking, or they can request a Christmas card to the family of the
pet with the stocking. This amazing program has saved hundreds of lives since its inauguration. Please continue this
life-saving and time-honored program by submitting the form below with your donation. If you are interested in
volunteering to make new stockings, please contact Alice Ann Blevins at 276-656-1101.

Life-Saving Generosity from Community
YOUR DONATIONS SAVE LIVES…THANK YOU!
Many of us have had to face a nightmarish situation
similar to the following: It’s 7:45 a.m., you’re already
running late for work, and you drive by a small fluffy
ball of fur that is either a kitten or puppy. To add insult
to injury, this all takes place in the middle of nowhere!
You slow down, turn around, get out of your car, and
evaluate what’s before you. Here is a young pup or kitten in the middle of nowhere, and there is not another
soul around…what do you do? Where do you go? This
couldn’t have happened at a worse time and you know
your own animals won’t accept any new additions or
your partner loves animals but is allergic…what next?
Where do you turn?
If you’re like many in our community, you go to the
Martinsville Henry County SPCA. Why? We are the
only local organization that exists solely for these moments. You come to the SPCA because you know your
newly found furry friend will receive excellent medical
care and will be safely held until we screen the perfect
adopter or rescue placement. And, you also know that you’ll encounter dedicated and compassionate animal care
professionals in a warm, caring environment.
Your contributions help make the Martinsville Henry County SPCA one of the leading private animal shelters in
the state of Virginia. We are so grateful for your help and support of our committed team of animal caregivers and
dedicated volunteers. You are helping touch the lives of thousands of homeless, abused, neglected, and, amazingly
beautiful souls. Whether these fur babies are facing an urgent need, a devastating loss of family due to unforeseen
hardships, or abandonment, together, with your help, we are committed to improving their quality of life.
The Martinsville Henry County SPCA is your community animal shelter. We exist to serve you, our community,
and the animals who have lost their way and need advocacy. We aim to provide hope, healing, and recovery, with
the ultimate goal of permanent placement in a safe and loving home.
More than ever, your gift is extremely important to us because it offers immediate resources that are directed to
current needs and opportunities at the shelter. Despite the efforts to promote low-cost or no-cost spay/neuter, the
number of animals coming through our doors continues to grow. Your gift can be designated to any particular
department or program: Critical Care Fund, Low-Cost/No-Cost Spay and Neuter, NKHMC (No-Kill Martinsville
Henry County), Rescue, or General Operations of the SPCA – wherever you choose!
As animal welfare and advocacy advances, your SPCA is committed to staying on the cutting edge – for you, for
everyone in the community, and, above all, for the homeless animals. Please help make this possible with your
contribution today! Your donations help our community – both two and four legged – become healthier.
From our lead veterinarian, Dr. Eric Lorens, to our staff technicians, administration, board members, and volunteers
– they all join me in thanking you for your generous support!
Thank you so much for your help. Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Nicole Harris
Executive Director

Home for the Holidays is a temporary foster
program designed to provide homes for
shelter animals during the holiday season.
Animals benefit from spending time away
from the shelter, learning to socialize with
other animals, and starting the basics of
housetraining. The goal of the Martinsville
Henry County SPCA Home for the Holidays
program is to see every cat, kitten, dog, and
puppy settled into foster homes.
Please consider opening your home to a
shelter animal during this holiday season,
especially during the week of Christmas.
Adopt or foster an animal this holiday season.
