7 GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Isaiah 11: 1-3
But a shoot shall sprout from the stump of Jesse,
and from his roots a bud shall blossom.
The spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him:
a spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
A spirit of counsel and of strength,
a spirit of knowledge and of fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the LORD.
Isaiah 11: 1-3

Wisdom
• Allows a person to understand
things from God’s point of view
• Allows a person to recognize truth and to use it to
glorify God by choosing Godly solutions to problems
• It is the capacity to love spiritual things more than
material ones
Understanding
• Comprehend the Catholic faith and “see God”
• Penetrates beyond the surface:
• Disclose the hidden meaning of Sacred Scriptures
• Seeing the hand of God at work in a person’s life, even in
suffering
• Revealing spiritual realities that underlie sensible
appearances (for example, the mystery of the Lord’s
sacrifice in the Mass)
Counsel
• Right judgment
• Knowing the difference between right and wrong,
good and evil, to avoid sin and live out the values
taught by Jesus
Fortitude
• Gift of courage and strength
• When a person is no longer afraid
to stand up for God and His truths,
to stand up for good against evil, even if it means accepting
rejection, verbal abuse, or physical harm
• Gives one the firmness of mind required both in doing
good and enduring evil
Knowledge
• Allows a person to understand
the meaning and purpose God has
for him and to live up to this meaning
• Differs from wisdom in that it is an action, not just a
desire to live up to the ways of God
• Differs from understanding in that it is not just an
ability, it is a knowing
Piety
• Reverence, a deep sense of
respect for God and the Church
• A desire to serve and worship
God out of love, not just duty
• A person with a true love for
God and real relationship with God
Fear of
the Lord
• An awareness of the glory and majesty of God
• A person with wonder and awe knows that God is the
perfection of all we desire: perfect knowledge, perfect
goodness, perfect power, and perfect love
• Totally dependent on God as a child is to a parent
