Carbohydrates
Basic Information
• What elements form carbohydrates?
• How do cells use carbohydrates (2 Main ways)
• What monomers form carbohydrates?
• Examples of carbohydrates:
Observation
Forming Monomers from Polymers
• When 2 monosaccharides join, the molecule is
called a:
• Disaccharide (remember, Bi- and Di- mean 2)
• When another monosaccharide is added to a
disaccharide, the resulting molecule is called a
polysaccharide
– So, poly- means more than 2
Dehydration Synthesis
• What does this mean?
• This is how monosaccharides join
Bond between monosaccharides
• The bond is a covalent bond
• Called a glycosidic bond
Naming Carbohydrates
• Most carbohydrate names end in the suffix ----ose
• Glucose (blood sugar)
• Fructose (fruit sugar)
• Cellulose (sugar that forms plant cell walls)
• Lactose (milk sugar)
Are Carbs. Polar?
• What does polar mean?
• How could we test to see if carbohydrates are
polar?
• Are they polar?
