The Dawn of the Civil War Harper’s Ferry, Lincoln’s Election, Southern Secession Harper’s Ferry • God’s angry man was planning a slave revolt. • Brown planned on raiding the federal arsenal at Harper’s Ferry, Virginia and distributing the arms to the slaves in the area to start a slave uprising. • With 21 men, Brown failed. Brown’s Hanging • Brown was captured by U.S. Marines commanded by Gen. Robert E. Lee and turned over to Virginia and tried to treason. • Brown was hanged on December 2, 1859. Lincoln is Elected President • Lincoln received the Republican nomination because he was a moderate when it came to slavery. • The south didn’t even put him on the ballot. Southern Secession • Lincoln’s Presidency was the final thing that happened before the South seceded. • They felt that they had lost all voice in the federal government. • South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas had all left the union. • The Confederate States of America was formed, recognizing slavery in all territories.
