They Forsook All and
Followed Him..
Luke 5:1-11
Luke 5:1-11 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed
upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of
Gennesaret,
• 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were
gone out of them, and were washing their nets.
• 3 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and
prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he
sat down, and taught the people out of the ship.
• 4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out
into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.
• 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all
the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will
let down the net.
•
• 6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of
fishes: and their net brake.
• 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other
ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled
both the ships, so that they began to sink.
• 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying,
Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
• 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of
the fishes which they had taken:
• 10 And so was also, James, and John, the sons of Zebedee which were
partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from
henceforth thou shalt catch men.
• 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all,
and followed him.
•Look what Peter,
James and John did
•They became
•
Disciples of
•
Jesus Christ!
•The People Jesus
• recognized as being
•
his followers
•
were called
•
Disciples
•The word "disciple" is not
• a common word today;
•it is not used much in our
•everyday language.
• What does the word, disciple, mean?
• Our English word, disciple, comes from a Latin word
that means pupil or student.
• The Greek word in the New Testament that we
translate with the word disciple means "to learn."
• The words disciple or disciples occurs (in the
American Standard Version):
• Seventy-three times in the gospel of Matthew.
• Forty-two times in the gospel of Mark.
• Thirty-six times in the gospel of Luke.
• Seventy-five times in the gospel of John.
• Thirty times in the book of Acts.
•During Jesus' earthly lifetime,
•the people who followed him to learn were
called disciples•-disciple was one of the most common words
used to describe
•the people who chose to follow Jesus.
•After Jesus' resurrection, the people who
believed, repented, and were baptized still
were called disciples.
•Let us consider these scriptures:
Acts 6:1 states the disciples in the Jerusalem
congregation were increasing number.
• Acts 6:2 states the apostles summoned
•
the congregation of the disciples.
•
• Acts 6:7 says, "The number of disciples
continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem.“
• Acts 9:1 says that Saul "was breathing threats
• and murder against the disciples of the
Lord."
• Acts 9:19 and 25 state that, after Saul became a Christian,
• the disciples in Damascus took care of him.
• Acts 9:26 says that the disciples in Jerusalem
• were afraid to associate with Saul when
• he tried to become a part of them.
• Acts 11:26 says the disciples were
• first called Christians in Antioch.
•
• Some 18 times after Acts 11:26, Christians are referred
• to as disciples
•We must be Disciples of
• Jesus Christ - willing to
learn
• and Follow Him.
Do you want to learn to pray acceptable
unto God?
• Early disciples of Jesus asked Him
• To teach them to pray..
• Luke 11:1-4 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain
place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us
to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
• 2 And he said unto them,
•
When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy
name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.
• 3 Give us day by day our daily bread.
• 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to
us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Do you want to learn how to live as a
Christian?
• Matthew 16:24-27
• 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come
after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and
follow me.
• 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and
whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
• 26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole
world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in
exchange for his soul?
• Choosing to be Jesus' disciple means that I let Jesus
teach me:
• Who I am. Gal. 2:20
• What my life's purpose is. Matt. 6:33
• How I am to live in this world. Rom. 12:1-2
• What my focus and perspective should be.Heb.12:1-2
• How I am to treat other people. Eph.4:32
• What it means to belong to and serve God. Prov.3:5-6
• What my eternal destiny is. Rev. 14:13
• As I learn from Jesus, my thinking and understanding
will always be changing and maturing. 2 Pet 3:18
