FUNCTION: what does it do? Skeletal System Muscular System Important Organs/Parts Provides structure and frame to support the body Protects vital organs Bone marrow: inside bone, makes red blood cells Allows internal and external body parts to move Skeletal muscle: voluntary movements (you choose to move) Cardiac muscle: muscle that makes up the heart Smooth muscle: involuntary (moves automatically) Digestive System Circulatory System Also known as CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM! Respiratory System Mouth esophagus stomach small intestine large intestine rectum anus (where waste exits body) Moves blood throughout the body Blood delivers OXYGEN and NUTRIENTS to all parts of the body Heart: muscle that pumps to keep blood moving Arteries: vessels (tubes) that take blood/oxygen AWAY from the heart to deliver to body Veins: vessels (tubes) that bring blood BACK to the heart to pick up more oxygen Nervous System Breaks down food into usable nutrients the body needs Usable nutrients are transported by the blood Waste the body cannot use = poop Controls breathing by inhaling OXYGEN gas and exhaling CARBON DIOXIDE gas Provides gas exchange in all other body systems Uses electrical signals to transfer information throughout the body Controls thinking and behavior Excretory System Removes wastes and other toxins from the blood Excreted (released) from body through urine (pee) Trachea: tube/airway that connects mouth/nose and lungs Lungs: organ where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange take place Brain: control center of nervous system Spinal cord: large cord that transports messages Nerves: made of nerve cells; transport messages electronically Kidneys: organs that filter tosins out of the blood Bladder: sac that holds urine until it is ready to be expelled
