Types of Waves
EQ: How do I define, identify and
compare the three main types of
waves?
Vocabulary
Wave - A disturbance that transfers energy from
one place to another
Energy – the ability to do work
Medium - A substance through which a wave
moves
Examples:
gases (air)
liquids (water)
EQ: How do I
define, identify and
solids (rope, earth)
compare the three
main types of
waves?
Vocabulary
Mechanical waves - A wave, such as a
sound wave or a seismic wave, that
requires a medium through which to
travel.
Vibration – a repeated back and forth (or up
and down) motion. It is the source of
waves.

Waves
• Waves are classified according to how
they move. The 3 types are:
– Transverse Waves
– Longitudinal Waves
– Surface Waves

Transverse Wave - A type of wave in which the
vibration or disturbance moves at right angles,
or perpendicular, to the direction in which the
wave travels.
direction of disturbance
Crest – highest part
of the wave
Trough – lowest part of
the wave

Longitudinal Waves - A type of wave in
which the vibration or disturbance
moves in the same direction that the
wave travels

Surface Waves – combinations of transverse and
longitudinal waves, meaning the up and down and
back and forth motions combine to make each
particle of water move in a circle. They occur at the
surface of two mediums, like water and air.
