Final Project: Website Creation

COMP 2681 – Web Design and Development
August 26th, 2016
Fisher’s Superkids English Center
Fisher’s Superkids is an English language center for children, located in Danang, Vietnam. I feel
that this company would be the best choice for my final project as they do a lot of good for the
community, with sponsorship programs for underprivileged youth and various local charities. After
working there for several years, I’m also very familiar with their needs, and feel that my website would
be of great use to them. Although the school has a decent website already, I think they could benefit
from a separated or incorporated site designed specifically for teacher communication with parents and
students.
Project Objectives

One of the challenges the school faces is keeping parents well-informed about their
children’s studies and what is going on the classroom. This website is designed to do so.

Provide supplementary materials so students can improve their English skills at home.
This is another common request of parents.

Provide teachers with a variety of tools to help with classroom management and lesson
delivery.

Reduce waste by having homework and daily lesson summaries completed online. This
will also give students the chance to correct some of their own mistakes using the
“check” option when completing daily lesson summaries.

Checklist of Websites

Web Sites – Similar sites to your site, re: similar business nature
1. http://fishersuperkids.com/en/home#top – This is the school’s website. The site could be linked
to the class websites I’ve created. I think the website is very well-designed, with a professional,
yet fun fell to it. It provides lots of info about the school, but lacks resources for teachers and
for communication on a class level.
2. http://www.teacherweb.com/tweb/Intro.aspx - This website can be used to create a customized
website for teachers. It seems quite useful with lots of included features, but more individualized
tools such as those on my sites “Classroom Tools” page aren’t possible.
3. https://rhaines.wordpress.com/ - This website is quite similar in nature to the one I have created.
I like how the teacher uses blog posts. A class blog where anybody in the class can post is
something I’d like to incorporate into my website, but I’d require more education about server-
side programming to make this possible. Again, this website doesn’t contain features that could
be used in the class, but is similar in other aspects.

Web Sites – Downloadable Sites
1. https://jquery.com/download/ This site can be used to download jQuery.
2. http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/activex/director/ieWin32700.htm This site
can be used to download the Shockwave flash player in order to support object
elements.
3. http://webcomponents.org/ This site has links to download a variety of web components,
such as the x-tag javascript library. Although I did not find a need to utilize this website,
it is good to know about.

Web Sites – Technical Information
1. www.w3schools.com – This site was very useful. It contains tutorials for almost all aspects of
HTML, CSS, and Javascript. It doesn’t just explain things, but also gives examples. I also used it
to learn a little bit about jQuery.
2. www.stackoverflow.com – This site has a great forum for finding answers to specific problems
faced when coding.
3. www.webdeveloper.com – Although I used the previous two websites much more, this website
was also useful for finding answers to specific problems when coding.
Evaluation Form
What is your first impression of the website?
Do you find the website well-organized and easy to navigate?
What do you think of the overall color scheme and visual appearance?
Do you have any suggestions to improve the overall visual appeal of the website?
Does the website clearly communicate essential information to parents?
Is there anything else you think parents would like to see included in this website?
Are there any other tools or components you feel would be useful to the teacher and students?
What are the most appealing aspects of the website’s design?
What else would you like to see added to this website?
Are there any components included that you would prefer not to have? If so, which ones?
What components could be improved? If so, which ones and how?
Do you have any further suggestions to improve the website or customize it to your needs? If so, what
ideas do you have?
Extended Features
1. Please check out the Youtube walkthrough ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inlo_t_m-cM ) of my
website that I sent to the company in addition to all the website files and evaluation form.
2. Many of the tools I created with Javascript required extra learning and knowledge beyond what was
included in the textbook, such as the use of jQuery. Although I didn’t discuss extended features with you
before commencing my project, please consider the extra effort when marking.
