Social Change
 Making Culture with Mobile Communication
 Adaptation of mobile culture into one’s everyday life has
created a new process in which teenagers can develop
their identities and culture
 Has led to acknowledge times and places that typically
have no meaning—‘no-where-places’ and ‘no-wheretimes’
 Redefining the lines between private and public
 “The mobile phone works as a practical and symbolic
‘membership categorization device’”(101).
Welcome to the World of
Multitasking!
“System Overload”
Ingrid Wickelgren
System Overload
When serious thought is required, people
learn less, waste more time, and make
more mistakes if they multitask
(Wickelgren, 4).
The brain normally doesn’t do two things
requiring conscious thought at the same
time; instead, it switches back and forth
between them (Wickelgren, 5).

Concluding Points
Class Activity
 Activity: In groups of 4-5, design your own cell
phone for kids.
 Instructions: Take a piece of construction paper
and design a non-functioning prototype of a kid’s
cell phone. Come up with a creative name for
your prototype. On a separate piece of paper,
draft a short pitch to Motorola about the features
of your phone and its appeal to kids. Present
your pitch to the class.
