Provenance insulates a gallery from
liability. If you can trace the possession of
the work from the artist to the present
owner, that is strong evidence that the
artist created the work.
Unless you can document that
ownership and ‘go back to
mama,’ you’ve got a problem.

Scientists are very interesting, but they
come after the true connoisseurs. So
fingerprints, all this stuff, is kind of that
lovely what-if, but it’s not essential to the
heart, to the artistic soul of the thing, and
that has no Pollock soul or heart.
The artworld doesn’t understand
fingerprints, any more than it
understands DNA. So you’re asking
them to take what they don’t understand.
That could be the guy who
cleaned out his room.

If you can send somebody to the electric
chair on fingerprints and test the blood
on their clothes, DNA and all this other
stuff, why in the hell can’t you do it on a
piece of art?
Well, the artworld and the
justice system, they’re kind of
two different worlds.
Connoisseurship is how the art
market—how the artworld—
decides on authenticity.
There has to be a consensus behind
the painting by ‘experts’ or you else
could end up in a pile of problems.

compelling evidence in other fields?

Stone, who bought a Pollock from a garbage dump.
