Course Progression Learning Targets
Course Description
This year-long, beginning-level class,
designed for students with at least one year
of woodwind, brass, and/ or percussion
ensemble experience, promotes the
enjoyment and appreciation of music
through performance of high-quality wind
and percussion literature. Rehearsals focus
on the development of critical listening
skills, instrumental and ensemble technique
and skills, expanded music literacy, and
aesthetic awareness culminating in periodic
public performances.

STUDENT WILL DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO:
The student will play with a characteristic tone quality on the
instrument.
The student will demonstrate the ability to properly adjust
instrument to correct intonation problems.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play with good tone
quality in all dynamic levels.
The student will demonstrate a correct articulation technique for
their instrument.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play the chromatic scale
in eighth notes in the appropriate range of their instrument. Quarter
note = 100
The student will demonstrate the ability to play all 12 major scales
in the All-State rhythmic pattern. Quarter note = 100
The student will demonstrate the knowledge of melodic, harmonic
and natural minor scales.
The student will demonstrate the ability to use alternate fingerings
and correct trill fingerings.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play a variety of
articulation styles legato, staccato and marcato while performing.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play chromatic scales in
the appropriate range of my instrument.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play all 12 major scales.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play with proper balance
and blend within the ensemble in the context of the pyramid of
sound.
The student will demonstrate the ability to identify the difference
between melodic and harmonic parts.
The student will hear and identify major and minor tonalities.
The student will write easy melodic and rhythmic dictations.
The student will correctly identify and apply a variety of tempos
and dynamics while playing The student will demonstrate the
ability to determine the key of the music.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play in mixed meters.
The student will demonstrate the ability to clap, count (subdividing)
and/or play simple rhythmic patterns using whole through sixteenth,
plus dotted-half, dotted-quarter, dotted-eighth, eighth note triplets,
quarter note triplets, and corresponding rests
The student will demonstrate the ability to sight read Grade 3 band
literature.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play a musical phrase.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play in a large or small
ensemble with balance and control.
The student will demonstrate the ability to play with the proper
style in an ensemble.
The student will demonstrate the ability to perform Grade 3 band
literature.
