Unit A: Instrumental Techniques
I. Brass/Woodwinds
Students will:
A. Demonstrate proper breath support and
an open, full tone quality.
B. Demonstrate articulation techniques,
including basic, legato, staccato,
marcato tonguing, and slurring.
C. Demonstrate range appropriate for their
instrument.
D. Demonstrate and apply basic alternate
fingerings/positions.
E. Perform arpeggios and one octave
scales in the major keys of Bb, Eb, Ab,
Db, F, C, G, minor keys of G, C, D, F,
A, and chromatic.
F. Adjust embouchure to match intonation
(especially when comparing to a like
instrument).
G. Demonstrate trill fingerings.
II. Percussion
Students will:
A. Accurately play accent exercises with
appropriate stick/mallet heights.
B. Correctly execute and count
rudimental rolls and rhythms in a
variety of time signatures.
C. Select appropriate mallets and sticks
for instruments and music.
D. Apply correct technique for accessory
instruments encountered in ensemble
literature.
E. Perform arpeggios and one octave
scales in the major keys of Bb, Eb, Ab,
Db, F, C, G, minor keys of G, C, D, F,
A, and chromatic on mallet
instruments.
F. Execute at least thirteen of the
standard NARD rudiments - medium
tempo.
G. Demonstrate dynamic range to include
pp to ff.
H. Demonstrate basic tuning and sticking
on timpani.
Unit B: Elements of Music
Students will:
A. Demonstrate and understand
the rhythmic values of the
following notes and rests:
whole, half, quarter, eighth,
and dotted quarter, dotted
half, sixteenth, dotted 8th,
triplet (eighth and quarter),
syncopation and tied rhythms.
B. Correctly identify the names
of lines and spaces in a clef
relative to their instrument.
C. Identify terms and symbols:
sharp, flat, natural, bar line,
measure, double bar, repeat
sign, clefs, time signature,
key signature, D.C al Fine,
D.S., coda, 1st & 2nd endings,
accent, slur, tie, staccato,
tenuto, and fermata.
D. Interpret basic key signatures
and accidentals: (Concert
Pitch): Major: Bb, Eb, Ab,
Db, F, C, & G. Minor: G, C,
F&A
E. Understand dynamic
markings: ff, f, mf, mp, p, pp,
crescendo, decrescendo.
F. Understand and demonstrate
different meters: 6/8, 3/8,
2/2/alla breve, 4/4 (common
time), 3/4, 2/4, and 5/8.
G. Understand enharmonics.
H. Understand Tempo Markings:
allegro, moderato, andante,
largo, allegretto,
ritardando/rallentando,
accelerando and a tempo.
I. Identify major and minor
intervals, unison through
octave.
Unit C: Ensemble Skills
I. Musical Skills
Students will:
A. Understand and follow
gestures and conducting
patterns in six, four,
three, and two.
B. Recognize dynamic and
tempo markings.
C. Understand the concept
of ensemble balance and
blend.
D. Demonstrate proper
performance and
audience etiquette.
E. Identify composers,
styles, periods and form
of music being learned.
F. Be exposed to a variety
of music from other
cultures.
G. Recognize melody,
countermelody, and
harmony.
II. Ensemble Responsibilities
Students will:
A. Practice daily
B. Come prepared with
music, instrument/
supplies and pencil.
C. Demonstrate a positive
attitude, respectful
behavior and a
willingness to learn.
Unit D: Performing and Creating
Students will:
A. Perform on their instruments
using the elements of music,
ensemble skills and
instrumental techniques to a
variety of performance
settings.
B. Create a simple melody using
grade appropriate pitches and
rhythms.
C. Be exposed to music
technology.
