The Persian Empire was huge.
It stretched from the Mediterranean Sea
all the way to the Indus River Valley.
•The Athenians defeated the Persians
at the Battle of Marathon.
•The warrior Pheidippides ran 25 miles from
Marathon to Athens with the news of victory
against the Persians.
•Athenian ships destroyed the Persian
fleet at the Battle of Salamis.
Pericles became one of the greatest leaders
of Athens during the Golden Age.
The 3 Greek philosophers,
Socrates, Aristotle, & Plato
searched for beauty and order in the world.
During the Golden Age the Greeks excelled
in arts, architecture, philosophy, & medicine.

Athenian leaders formed an alliance called The Delian League.
The Spartans and their allies rebelled against Athens by attacking
and destroying farms and homes around Athens.
A plague caused the death of thousands of Athenians along
with their leader, Pericles. This weakened the Athenian
government causing them to surrender to Sparta.
