Prokaryotes and eukaryotes
We Are Learning To (WALT):
Learning Objectives –
• What are eukaryotic and
prokaryotic cells?
What I’m Looking For (WILF):
ALL: Identify plant, animal and bacterial
cells and classify them as eukaryotic or
prokaryotic cells (3)
MOST: Label diagrams of bacterial cells.
(5-)
SOME: Describe the differences
between eukaryotic and prokaryotic
cells in terms of structure and size. (6)

Eukaryotes VS Prokaryotes
30-Apr-17
Learning Objective:
How are bacteria cells the same and different to plant an
animal cells?
Success Criteria:
1) What is a eukaryotic cell and prokaryotic cell?
2) What organelles or features do prokaryotic cells have?
3) What are the similarities and differences between prokaryotes and
eukaryotes?

Cell Theory
Cells are the basic units of living organisms.
The cell theory states that:
– All living things are made of one or more cells.
– Cells are the basic unit of structure and function
in living things.
– All cells come from other cells.

Eukaryotic cells
Cell that have membrane-bound organelles such as
mitochondria and nucleus.
• Plant and animal cells have a cell membrane,
cytoplasm and genetic material enclosed in a
nucleus.
• Plant cells contain some organelles that are not
found in animal cells.
Prokaryotic cells
Unicellular organisms such as bacteria that do not
have membrane-bound organelles
• Bacterial cells are much smaller than eukaryotic
cells.
• They have cytoplasm and a cell membrane
surrounded by a cell wall.
• The genetic material is not enclosed in a nucleus.
• It is a single DNA loop and there may be one or
more small rings of DNA called plasmids.

Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
Prokaryotes - Missing a
Nucleus
• Prokaryotes do not have an
organized nucleus.
Eukaryotes - Cells with
Parts
• Eukaryotic cells have
an organized nucleus.
Construct a table to compare the
structure of plant, animal and
bacterial cells.

What cell is it

Write a paragraph to compare a
bacterial cell
with an animal cell in terms of
structure and size.
• Be ready to read it out to the class
2 The diagram shows two cells, a bacterial cell and a plant cell.
2 (a) (i) Both the bacterial cell and the plant cell contain ribosomes.
What is the function of a ribosome?

cell.
