Summer Assignment for AP Biology 2012-2013 Reading Assignment: Read the following two books: The Hot Zone by Richard Preston and Genome by Matt Ridley Both books can be found at Barnes and Nobles. Be prepared for a book test on both books in the first couple of weeks of school. 1. Go to youtube.com and search for “bozemanbiology”. Choose AP Biology Video Essentials. View #2-Natural Selection What did Charles Darwin do? What is evolution? What 5 things can cause evolution? What is the smallest unit that can evolve? How can new characteristics enter a population? Describe how peppered moths illustrate natural selection. In the Hardy Weinberg equation, what does p2 represent? 2pq? q2? What is an adaptation? View #3- Examples of Natural Selection. How does each of these demonstrate natural selection? Blueberries- Donas variabilis- Malaria- Tuberculosis- 2. Go to The Biology Place on the Internet. Just Google it. Go to Biocoach and pick Properties of Biomolecules. Work through the entire activity, including review and practice options. Explain how molecules are joined together and how they are separated. Make a chart of the 4 biomolecules and show properties and functions of each. Include the building blocks of each type of molecule. (Do this on a separate piece of paper.) Describe the different types of amino acids and give examples of each. Take the self-quiz and make sure you know all the right answers. 3. Go to the following website: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/biochemistry/biochemistry.html Work through the Chemistry Tutorial taking notes as you go. Test yourself and be sure to know answers to each question. Click on the Chemistry of Amino Acids. Work through the entire tutorial and make a chart of the 20 amino acids including their physical and chemical properties. 4. Go to the following website: http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/labbench/lab11/intro.html Work through the animal behavior lab. Design your own lab to investigate animal behavior. Be sure to include each part of a good scientific design, such as background on your subject, hypothesis, and procedure-including experimental variable tested and variables controlled. Construct a chart to record data. The animal should be something small that we can obtain easily and work with in our lab. You will turn in your proposed experiment for a grade and present it to the class. The class will choose one to perform and you will be in charge of the investigation. On the first full day of class, you will need to bring these sheets with questions answered, charts you made, any notes you took, and your proposed experiment. If you having any questions, you can contact me by email- [email protected]
