Spelling and Vocabulary We will be using a word study approach to phonics, spelling, and vocabulary instruction this year. This type of approach helps learners develop an understanding of the structure of written words and how this structure reflects the alphabetic pattern. Students will gain a better understanding of alphabetic/sound relationships, pattern relationships, and meaning. Topics covered: Word sorts specific to pattern level. Dictation Sentences S A F UV G RV O Writing Each year in their writing, students should demonstrate increasing sophistication in all aspects of language use, from vocabulary and syntax to the development and organization of ideas, and they should address increasingly demanding content and sources. Students advancing through the grades are expected to meet each year’s grade‐specific standards and retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades. The expected growth in student writing ability is reflected both in the standards themselves and in the collection of annotated student writing samples. Writing Student writing will be modeled with focused mini lessons focused on a specific weekly skill along with time management strategies to prepare for On Demand writing pieces. Writing Forms: • Narrative Writing • Argumentative Writing • Informative Writing Thinking Maps are used in Prewriting stage of writing. 7 Traits of Good Writing will be embedded each week. Grammar Modeling through mini-lessons Daily grammar review Application in every day writing Math Standards Topics covered in Sixth Grade: •Ratios and Proportional Relationships – Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems •The Number System – Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions •Expressions and Equations – Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. •Geometry – Solve real world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume. •Statistics and Probability – Develop and understanding of statistical variability. Math Course 1 To the parents whose students are taking Glencoe Math, Course 1: Textbooks - Glencoe Math Course 1, Volumes 1 and 2 Students may access the textbook online at home by logging into Infinite Campus and clicking Custom Links. http://www.cusd80.com/ Stanley Gudder, a contemporary mathematician, noted that “the essence of mathematics is not to make simple things complicated, but to make complicated things simple.” (Intel Mathematics Teacher Manuel, Page 329) Math Course 2 To the parents whose students are taking Glencoe Math, Course 2: Acceleration is an intervention that moves students through an educational program at a more rapid rate than their agemates. The goal of acceleration is to tailor the level and complexity of the curriculum to the ability and academic readiness of individual children (Colangelo et al., 2004). Textbooks - Glencoe Math Course 2, Volumes 1 and 2 Students may access the textbook online at home by logging into Infinite Campus and clicking Custom Links. Students will be graded on the 7th grade concepts taught in Course 2, and they will take the Course 2 Galileo Benchmark assessments. They will, however, take the 6th grade AZ Merit assessment. Mathematical concepts we will cover are ratios and proportional relationships, the number system, equations and expressions, geometry, and statistics and probability. World History Topics Covered in Sixth Grade: Stone Age and Early Cultures Mesopotamian Era Greece India China Egypt Rome The Dark Ages The Renaissance Science Topics Covered in Sixth Grade: Earth Process Weather and Natural Disasters Energy Plant and Animal Cells Inventors and Inventions Scientific Method and Science Fair Block Specials Band & Orchestra Be prepared and practice, practice, practice! Homework This year homework will be varied and based on the needs of the subject matter. Anything that is not finished in class will be taken home and finished for homework. This really reinforces to the students the importance of using their class time wisely. When they use their time wisely, they will have less homework on a nightly basis. However, the continuation of class work will not always be the student’s only homework. Students will have a reading goal of 30 books this school year. Read a minimum of 5 days a week consistently. Agendas To help with organization, students should write down what they are working on in class, as well as what they have for homework assignments each day. We will spot check for completion and legibility. This is a tool to help keep students organized and a form of communication for you. Grades The following grading system can be found on our district website. We will continue to use Infinite Campus as our grading system. We are paperless, please check your parent portal regularly.
