Ano de publicação: 1998 Fonte/Imprenta: In: GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON CONSERVATION OF DOMESTIC ANIMAL GENETIC RESOURCES, 4., 1998, Kathmandu. Proceedings: Kathmandu: Nepal Agricultural Research Council / Rare Breeds International, 1998. p.109-112. Idioma: Inglês Conteúdo: Most of the domestic animals were introduced from the Iberian Peninsula to the Americas during the first 50 years of colonization, by Spanish and Portugal settlers. In Brazil, a number of species that were introduced including the Zebu cattle from Asia adapted well and developed into "local" breeds. Imported Zebu cattle were more productive resulting in an increase in the production of milk and beef, eventually replacing most of the local cattle. The caracu, pantaneiro, Curraleiro and Criollo Lageano cattle, indigenous to Brazil are some of these "local" breeds under threat of extinction. The Brazilian National Program for Genetic Resources created by EMBRAPA (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) initiated in-situ and ex-situ programs to conserve cattle, buffaloes, pigs, sheep, goats, horses and asses. These programs have been described in detail.
