M.; GONDS, V.; HUBER, O.; JONES, S.; SGRENZAROLI, M.; FRITZ, S. A digital land cover map of South America has been produced using remotely sensed satellite data acquired between 1995 and the year 2000. The mapping scale is defined by the 1 km spatial resolution of the map grid-cell. In order to realize the product, different sources of satellite data were used, each source providing either a particular parameter of land cover characteristic required by the legend, or mapping a particular land cover class. The map legend is designed both to fit requirements for regional climate modelling and for studies on land cover change. The legend is also compatible with a wider, global, land cover mapping exercise, which seeks to characterize the world?s land surface for the year 2000. As a first step, the humid forest domain has... Provedor de dados: 119 Autores: VERWEIJ, P.; SIMOES, M.; ALVES, A.; FERRAZ, R.; CORMONT, A. Deforestation and climate change heavily impact the ecosystem of the Amazon rainforest threatening its resilience and the sustainability of many human activities. Land protection may prevent ecosystems and their services to deteriorate from the pressures of agricultural expansion, population growth and wood harvesting. In the Brazilian Amazon land protection occurs in several forms such as environmental conservation, setting biodiversity priority areas and the delineation of indigenous lands. Still, the effects are not clear as understanding of the ecosystems is incomplete and responses to human actions are highly uncertain. Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) are models that probabilistically represent correlative and causal relationships among variables. BBNs... Ano: 2014 Utility of basic research in plant/crop physiology in relation to crop improvement: a review and a personal account Provedor de dados: 61 Autores: El-Sharkawy,Mabrouk A. Agricultural research and development plays an essential role in a nation's economic development, providing for food security for an ever-increasing population. In developed countries, the gap between potential and actual yield is largely closed because of a combination of advanced technologies, high-yielding new varieties and the application of agrochemicals in highly mechanized production systems. In most of these countries, agricultural production exceeds national demand, resulting in excess products for export. In many of the developing countries, however, agricultural productivity is still far below what it should be because of multiple technical and socio-economic constraints. Food deficits are the norm in poor and middle-income countries, requiring... Ecosystem regime shifts, which are long-term system reorganizations, have profound implications for sustainability. There is a great need for indicators of regime shifts, particularly methods that are applicable to data from real systems. We have developed a form of Fisher information that measures dynamic order in complex systems. Here we propose the use of Fisher information as a means of: (1) detecting dynamic regime shifts in ecosystems, and (2) assessing the quality of the shift in terms of intensity and pervasiveness. Intensity is reflected by the degree of change in dynamic order, as determined by Fisher information, and pervasiveness is a reflection of how many observable variables are affected by the change. We present a new robust methodology to... Tipo: Peer-Reviewed Reports Palavras-chave: Ecosystems; Fisher information; Marine ecosystem; Regime shifts; Resilience; Sustainability. Ano: 2000 Linking Future Ecosystem Services and Future Human Well-being Provedor de dados: 7 Autores: Butler, Colin D; Australian National University; [email protected]; Oluoch-Kosura, Willis; University of Nairobi; [email protected]. Ecosystem services are necessary, yet not sufficient for human well-being (however defined). Insufficient access to the ecosystem provisioning service of food is a particularly important factor in the loss of human well-being, but all ecosystem services contribute in some way to well-being. Although perhaps long obvious to ecologists, the links between ecosystems and aspects of human well-being, including health, have been less well understood among the social science community. This situation may now be starting to change, thanks in part to the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA). Causality between ecosystem services and well-being is bidirectional; it is increasingly clear that functioning societies can protect or enhance ecosystem services, and... Research on the barriers and limits to climate change adaptation identifies many factors, but describes few processes whereby adaptation is constrained or may indeed fail to avoid catastrophic losses. It often assumes that barriers are by and large distinct from limits to adaptation. We respond to recent calls for comparative studies that are able to further knowledge about the underlying drivers of barriers and limits to adaptation. We compare six cases from across Australia, including those in alpine areas, rivers, reefs, wetlands, small inland communities, and islands, with the aim of identifying common underlying drivers of barriers and limits to adaptation. Ano: 2015 Understanding Complex Human Ecosystems: The Case of Ecotourism on Bonaire Provedor de dados: 7 Autores: Abel, Thomas; National Taipei University; [email protected]. It is suggested that ecotourism development on the island of Bonaire can be productively understood as a perturbation of a complex human ecosystem. Inputs associated with ecotourism have fueled transformations of the island ecology and sociocultural system. The results of this study indicate that Bonaire's social and economic hierarchy is approaching a new, stable systems state following a 50-yr transition begun by government and industry that stabilized with the appearance of ecotourism development and population growth. Ecotourism can be understood to have "filled in" the middle of the production hierarchy of Bonaire. Interpreted from this perspective, population growth has completed the transformation by expanding into production niches at smaller... Lagoons are highly productive coastal features that provide a range of natural services that society values. Their setting within the coastal landscape leaves them especially vulnerable to profound physical, ecological, and associated societal disturbance from global climate change. Expected shifts in physical and ecological characteristics range from changes in flushing regime, freshwater inputs, and water chemistry to complete inundation and loss and the concomitant loss of natural and human communities. Therefore, managing coastal lagoons in the context of global climate change is critical. Although management approaches will vary depending on local conditions and cultural norms, all management scenarios will need to be nimble and to make full use of... Ano: 2009 Institutions for Managing Resilient Salmon (Oncorhynchus Spp.) Ecosystems: the Role of Incentives and Transaction Costs Provedor de dados: 7 Autores: Hanna, Susan S; Oregon State University; [email protected]. Institutions are the mechanisms that integrate the human and ecological spheres. This paper discusses the institutional challenge of integrating salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) ecosystems and human systems in ways that effectively promote resilience. Salmon recovery in the Columbia River Basin demonstrates the challenge. Despite the comprehensive scope of Basin salmon management, it has a number of problems that illustrate the difficulties of designing institutions for ecosystem and human system resilience. The critical elements of salmon ecosystem management are incentives and transaction costs, and these comprise a large piece of missing institutional infrastructure. Once the focus is placed on incentives and costs, a number of different management strategies... Growth of molluscs raised in coastal zones, where the water exchange rate is low, appears to be limited, once a certain biomass level is attained, by the availability of food, making it necessary to determine as accurately as possible the trophic capacity of an ecosystem. This paper analyses the various sources of food for molluscs. It would appear that dissolved organic substances play a major role, providing up to half the energy necessary for their metabolism. Particulate material is filtered by molluscs in proportion to their size, with optimum filtration rates varying with species. The negative effect on meat production of high mineraI seston rates is demonstrated, and an analysis provided of the respective role of each component of organic matter.... Provedor de dados: 5 Autores: Goulletquer, Philippe. The Millenium Ecosystem Assessment (2005) demonstrated that the biodiversity is the keystone for the sustainaibility of present and future ecosystems services. In spite of the highly significant effort carried out by the Census of Marine Life over the last ten years, and an increasing research effort, marine biodiversity and precise ecosystem functioning remain largely unknown and failure to reach the CBD 2010 objectives is obvious. Meanwhile, the concept of ‘ecosystem approach’ is progressing, translated into new policies such as the revised European Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). We might question if the scientific community is ready enough to built scenarios for the future and provide integrated advice to the policy makers for biodiversity conservation... With the advent of deep submergence research vessels (DSRVs) biological and ecological studies of ocean deeps have made great strides. Especially these submersibles allowed to conduct physiological and biochemical experiments on benthic fauna directly on the bottom or on board with alive retrieved animals. A second great interest is the possibility to work in chaotic areas and on microenvironments. Without DSRVs most of measurements and observations obtained on hydrothermals vents would had been impossible. We will present the different equipment designed for the two French DSRVs used during the cruises conducted by the Departement "Environnement Profond" de l'IFREMER to study hydrothermal and "normal" deep-sea ecosystems. The ICES Study Group on the North Sea Benthos Project 2000 undertook to integrate recent (1999–2002) macrobenthic infaunal and environmental data from various national sources. The main aim was to compare the outcome with that of the ICES North Sea Benthos Survey conducted in 1986, to identify any significant changes and their likely causes. In the process, the exercise yielded valuable lessons for the conduct of international collaborative programmes, as well as insights into the utility of a range of interpretational tools. These are timely in view of increasing requirements for periodic sea-wide assessments of quality status to meet international obligations, such as those under OSPAR, ICES, HELCOM, and EU auspices for European waters. Provedor de dados: 5 Autores: Martin, Y; Lelong, P; Cauchi, B. In order to study bacteria-plankton relationships, experimental and mathematical models were used to stimulate biological processes implicated in plankton ecosystems and to analyze community relationships. The model components are phytoplankton, zooplankton, autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria, ciliates, nutrients, organic matter and phytoplankton antibiotics. This study shows the importance of some factors affecting bacteria communities dynamics and the bacterial activity in mineralization process. Bacterial populations seem to be controlled essentially by the concentration and chemical composition of organic substrates. Antibiosis and predation show a lesser importance on changes in bacteria communities. Hydrothermal communities of various species compositions have been described from the eastern and western Pacific and Atlantic. Brine and cold seeps and hydrocarbon seepages have been found off Florida, off the Oregon and Japanese subduction systems, on the Laurentian Fan, near Barbados, and off Louisiana. Biomasses range from 10 to 70 kg/m super(2), fresh weight. Basic microdistribution of species groups in aureoles centered around hydrothermal vents reveals different levels of adaptation to harsh physico-chemical conditions. The Momareto cruise was held from August 6 to September 6, 2006 on the new French oceanographic vessel Pourquoi pas? The ROV Victor 6000 visited three vent fields, ranging from 850m to 2300m, on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The scientific objective of the cruise was to study the spatial and temporal dynamics of hydrothermal communities colonizing these active vent sites. Aside scientific and technological objectives, one of the major goals of this cruise was to share the excitement of our science with the public. For this, the results of the project were shared through different media. The most challenging and exciting communication event remains the real-time transmission of images acquired by the ROV Victor at 1700m depth to a 250 person audience on land. The errors in primary production estimation by the radiocarbon method may differ from one trophic region to another. Such supposition is based on unequal phytoplanktonic structural characteristics of these regions. These errors are likely to appear rather significant in oligotrophic waters predominated by nano- and ultranano-plankton (the so-called picoplankton). The organic substance of oligotrophic waters is obviously produced by picoplankton for the most part, the need for clarifying possible errors when estimating primary production by the radiocarbon method, which is the purpose of the present work is urgent. Ian; Cury, Philippe; Brander, Keith; Jennings, Simon; Moellmann, Christian; Planque, Benjamin. Modern fisheries research and management must understand and take account of the interactions between climate and fishing, rather than try to disentangle their effects and address each separately. These interactions are significant drivers of change in exploited marine systems and have ramifications for ecosystems and those who depend on the services they provide. We discuss how fishing and climate forcing interact on individual fish, marine populations, marine communities, and ecosystems to bring these levels into states that are more sensitive to (i.e. more strongly related with) climate forcing. Fishing is unlikely to alter the sensitivities of individual finfish and invertebrates to climate forcing. It will remove individuals with specific... Provedor de dados: 5 Autores: Rochet, Marie-joelle; Rice, Jake. An evaluation framework developed to help select an appropriate suite of indicators to support an ecosystem approach to fisheries management was tested experimentally by asking independent experts to weight the selection criteria provided and to score indicators against those criteria in several ecological settings. The steps in selecting indicators proved to be prone to subjectivity and value judgement, and differences in scores between experts were the main factor contributing to variability in evaluation results. Having to justify scores in a written document did not improve consistency among the experts. The framework, however, did enhance transparency by explicitly stating each issue to be addressed in the selection process, and by giving experts or... The gelatinous macroplanktonic organisms living in the deep sea can only be studied with manned submersibles. There is presently in increasing interest in the study of the role of this part of the pelagic ecosystem, because they are strongly involved in the transformation of the particulate organic matter. Their transparency, small size and mobility present technical challenges, unanticipated by the designers of the first submersibles, aimed at the sea bottom observation. Despite these limitations, the use of conventional submersibles has brought very interesting results. It is hoped that engineers will take into account the requirements of pelagic observations in the design of future submersibles. Mangrove forests are unique ecosystems which provide a range of important goods and services. However, they are suffering high rates of destruction around the world, and will be one of the first ecosystems affected by the predicted sea level rise. This project aims to establish re-planted experimental plots of mangroves in cleared areas. Experimental treatments will consist of plots of three different tree species, along with all possible multi-species mixtures and unplanted controls. Volunteers will assist in planting mangroves, and in measuring a range of biological and physical parameters relevant to important ecosystem functions, such as productivity and growth rates, susceptibility to disease, faunal abundance (of fish and crabs) and sedimentary... We present the key feature of a quantitative food web model for the shelf and slope waters off Sierra Leone, constructed using the Ecopath with Ecosim software. Three periods are represented: 1964, based on data from the Guinean Trawling Survey, complemented with field data on lower trophic levels gathered in the late 1950/early 1960s and published by A.R. Longhurst; 1978, for which fish abundance data from an ex-USSR survey exist, along with related, scattered fisheries information; and 1990, for which a fair amount of fisheries data exist, along with the results of a Spanish trawl survey. Demersal fish biomass appears to have declined linearly from 1964 to 1990, due to the massive increase of the catches of distant water fleets operating in Sierra Leone,... The structure of demersal fish assemblages on the continental shelf and upper continental slope of the Gulf of Guinea is described. Community structure is determined primarily by depth and type of sediment on the seabed. Changes in the composition of the identified species assemblages over a 25-year period are examined. The dynamics of the assemblages are influenced by physico-chemical parameters of the water masses, mainly temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, which are periodically modified by the seasonal coastal upwelling that occurs in the western Gulf of Guinea. Increased irresponsible fishing operations (like the use of explosives) that lead to habitat alteration and other anthropogenic activities like oil and gas exploration which have the... Sediment characteristics and tidal currents were studied in the 1500 ha intertidal area south of Inhaca Island, Mozambique. Thetide is semi-diurnal with a range at spring of about 3 m. The area connects directly to the ocean through the Ponta Torres Straitand (indirectly) through several narrow tidal channels ending up in Maputo Bay. Velocities of up to 0.75 m s-1 were measured in the Ponta Tones strait. After Low Water, Indian ocean water starts entering the tidal flats, while entrance from the MaputoBay side is delayed by one to several hours. With only one tide gauge and one current meter at hand, we found indications of ahigher mean sea level on the oceanic side (probably due to ocean wave set up) and a mean flow in the Ponta Torres Straitdirected... Time-series of condition factor (CF) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were generated using general linear models (GLM) for sardine Sardinops sagax stocks in the northern and southern Benguela ecosystems over the period 1984–1999. During this period the biomass of sardine in the northern Benguela remained at relatively low levels of <500 000 tons, whereas that of southern Benguela sardine increased 40-fold to 1.3 million tons. The GLMs explained 27 and 45% of the observed variation in CF, and 32 and 28% of the observed variation in GSI, for sardine in the northern and southern Benguela subsystems respectively. Whereas the sardine CF in the northern Benguela remained stable over time, that for the southern Benguela stock declined steadily during the study... Ano: 2001 URL: http://hdl.handle.net/1834/2124 Management of Oil Spill Dispersal Along the Nigerian Coastal Areas Provedor de dados: 20 Autores: Nwilo, P.C.; Badejo, O.T. Nigeria, one of the world’s largest oil exporters, has a coastline of approximately 853km facing the Atlantic Ocean. This coastline lies between latitude 4o 10’ to 6o 20’ N and longitude 2o 45’ to 8o 35’ E. The Nigerian coast is composed of four distinct geomorphology units namely the Barrier-Lagoon Complex; the Mud Coast; the Arcuate Niger Delta and the Strand Coast. 90-95% of export revenues in Nigeria is from the oil sector. Nigeria’s oil reserves are about 31.5 billion barrels, while Nigeria’s crude oil production averaged 2.118 million barrels per day in 2002. Oil spillage is a major environmental problem in Nigeria. Between 1976 and 1996 Nigeria recorded a total of 4835 oil spill incidents, which resulted in a loss of 1,896,960 barrels of oil to the... Provedor de dados: 20 Autores: Bartholomae, Ch.; Van der Plas, A. The Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has the task of collecting and providing relevant oceanographic information for management of their fisheries. However, quality information is difficult to provide because of the complexity of the processes involved in the Namibian marine ecosystem. Nonetheless, there are oceanographic data available that can contribute to fisheries management by improving the general understanding of important oceanographic processes related to fisheries. The focus of this paper is on the development of simple environmental indices that can serve as a measurement or proxy of the state or intensity of certain important oceanographic processes or variables for temporal comparison. These indices relate to oceanographic... Ano: 2007 URL: http://hdl.handle.net/1834/4971 Sustainability of the Benguela: ex Africa semper aliquid novi Provedor de dados: 20 Autores: Shannon, L.V.; O’Toole, M.J. The Benguela Current ecosystem is situated along the coast of south western Africa, stretching from east of the Cape of Good Hope, in the south, northwards into Angola waters and encompassing the full extent of Namibia’s marine environment. It is one of the four major coastal upwelling ecosystems of the world which lie at the eastern boundaries of the oceans. Like the Humboldt, California and Canary systems, the Benguela is an important centre of marine biodiversity and marine food production. Its distinctive bathymetry, hydrography, chemistry and trophodynamics combine to make it one of the most productive ocean areas in the world, with a mean annual primary productivity of 1.25 kilograms of carbon per square metre per year—about six times higher than the... The forests are characterized by dense or moderately dense stands of tall trees, species of the genera Sterculia, Chlorophora and Memecylon. The drier woodlands include stands of Cynometra, Manilkara and Afzelia. Centuries of human occupation have reduced the forest element which was originally more extensive. In May 1999, two sites were selected within the Mombasa Marine Park and Reserve for the study of macroalgal succession due to bleaching. One of the sites was Starfish, which lies within the Mombasa Marine Park and is protected from fishing and the other site was Ras Iwatine, which lies in the Reserve area and is Subjected to fishing activities. The study revealed that the Starfish site had a significantly higher hard coral cover, which did not change over the study period. A comparison of the density of macroalgae revealed that a higher proportion of the substrate in Ras Iwatine was dominated by macroalgae. Settlement tiles, used to study algal recruitment, indicated that the succession process in the Starfish site passes through more stages compared to... H.; Kreiner, A. This study attempts to explain the variability in recruitment of sardine in the northern Benguela and to develop potential models by including environmental information to predict recruitment. Two different recruitment and spawner number datasets were available: a VPA-developed dataset, for the period 1952–1987, and data from a simple age-structured model for 1992–2007. In all, four environmental indices were used: the degree of the intrusion of the warm Angola Current into northern Namibia, termed the Angola–Benguela front index; the extent of the upwelling area off central Namibia; average sea surface temperature (SST) over the northern and central Namibian shelf; and wind stress anomalies at Lüderitz as an indicator of upwelling strength. There is an international consensus, expressed in the Convention on Biological Diversity, World Summit on Sustainable Development, and Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, that biodiversity at all levels – genetic, species and ecosystem – have a critical role in sustaining livelihoods and human development. They underpin and make possible all forms of economic activity. Damage to components of biodiversity have economic consequences, the impacts of which fall most heavily on the poor. In few contexts is this as clear as in the case of mangrove ecosystems and their dependent human populations. Mangroves support livelihoods in providing habitat for food species, timber for dwellings, cooking and heat, and many other subsistence and commercial activities.... Spawning habitats of sardine and anchovy in eastern boundary current systems are characterized in an attempt to understand the fluctuations observed in their abundance. The northern Benguela, as an eastern boundary current system, is characterized by turbulent conditions that seem to govern the variability observed in the abundance of these species. Sardine and anchovy have developed mechanisms that enable them to maximize productivity. In the northern Benguela, spawning intensity is historically known to be high in periods and vicinities where turbulence is reduced. However, it is believed that selection of conditions for spawning by these species may change withfluctuations in abundance of fish. When considering zooplankton feeding as one of the pathways involved in the transfer of substances in marine ecosystems, it is important to study the composition and size distribution of the seston: firstly, the elements in which one is interested may be associated with different types and sizes of particles; secondly, particle size and composition are important factors in relation t o the feeding process of the zooplankton itself. High speed cinematographic studies have recently revealed that copepods use two different mechanisms for feeding. Small particles (< 12 pm) are collected by continuous low amplitude movements of the second maxillae and combing of the appendages. Larger particles are detected and collected individually by means of a specific... Tipo: Info:eu-repo/semantics/article Palavras-chave: Ecosystems; Seston; Zooplankton. In the Parc National du Banc d'Arguin (P.N.B.A.) in Mauritania, the mangroves of the West-African coast reach their northernmost distribution and comprise exclusively <i>Avicennia germinans</i>. As a biogeographically marginal, monospecific mangal in an area where freshwater availability has decreased over the last decades, concern about the survival of the mangroves has been expressed. As yet, a description was lacking and no data regarding the fitness of <i>A. germinans</i> in the P.N.B.A. were available. The mangrove and associated vegetation nearby Cape Timiris (southern border of the P.N.B.A.) was mapped in January 1998 and described for the adult, young and juvenile vegetation layer, along the lagoon perimeter of about 4 km.... Mangrove sediments from three different mangrove ecosystems (Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary in the Godavari Delta, Andhra Pradesh, India, and Galle and Pambala, south-west Sri Lanka) were analysed for their organic carbon content, elemental ratios (C:N) and carbon stable isotope composition. Organic carbon content (0.6 – 31.7% dry weight), C/N ratios (7.0 – 27.3) and d13C (between –29.4 and –20.6‰) showed a wide range of values. Lower stocks of organic carbon coincided with low C/N (atom) ratios and less negative d13C values, indicating import of marine or estuarine particulate suspended matter. High organic carbon stocks coincided with high C/N ratios and d13C values close, but not equal, to... Mexico counts among the five countries with the highest biodiversity in the world. In the Yucatán Peninsula, there are aquatic ecosystems with a very special microbial diversity. These ecosystems are essential for the ecological equilibrium of the region, and are seriously threatened by human activities. Access and knowledge of the microbial resources of these environments have an enormous scientific interest, and could potentially result in biotechnological products which could lead to more efficient and environmentally friendly processes; it could also offer a full arsenal of microorganisms and/or novel molecules to the local and world industry to face the current needs. In recent years, with the rise of metagenomic technology, knowledge about microbial... Tipo: Journal article Palavras-chave: Ecosystems; Biotechnology; 454-sequencing. Recent research developments in common-pool resource models emphasize the importance of links with ecological systems and the presence of non-linearities, thresholds and multiple steady states. In a recent paper Kossioris et al. (2008) develop a methodology for deriving feedback Nash equilibria for non-linear differential games and apply this methodology to a common-pool resource model of a lake where pollution corresponds to benefits and at the same time affects the ecosystem services. This paper studies the structure of optimal state- dependent taxes that steer the combined economic-ecological system towards the trajectory of optimal management, and provides an algorithm for calculating such taxes. In many places, growing population, in conjunction with efforts to increase food security, is escalating pressure to expand agriculture within wetlands. The environmental impact of wetland agriculture can have profound social and economic repercussions for people dependent on ecosystem services other than those provided directly by agriculture. If wetlands are not used sustainably, the functions which support agriculture, as well as other food security and ecosystem services, are undermined. This report synthesizes findings from multidisciplinary studies conducted into sustainable wetland agriculture by IWMI and partners in Africa and Asia. It highlights the value of wetland agriculture for poverty reduction as well as the need for more systematic planning... Basin water development and rural dynamics in the Krishna Basin have led to a degradation of downstream ecosystems manifesting itself by salinizing soil and groundwater, increasing pollution, disappearing mangroves and desiccating wetlands. Reversing this evolution requires the formal recognition of the environment as a water user in its own right and the implementation of an environmental water provision. This provision should be based on a two-tier allocation system with assured discharges in the irrigation canals of the delta and to the ocean. This will lead to further commitment of water resources but this is needed to reconcile the social, economic and environmental objectives of a sustainable development. Other measures facilitating integrated... Provedor de dados: 31 Autores: Dissanayake, Priyanka; Smakhtin, Vladimir U. Many decisions on water allocation in river basins are made on economic grounds. Environmental and social benefits of water should also be considered in river basin management, and attempts should be made to value them similarly. This is not a straightforward task and very few studies have directly addressed this issue to date. In this paper, the Menik Ganga (River) in southern Sri Lanka is used as a case study to attempt and evaluate the costs and benefits of environmental water allocations, referred to as ‘environmental flows’ (EF). In this study, a broad definition of EF is used: the components of EF evaluated include the requirements of the religious festival, the requirements of the Yala National Park, the requirements of the Pilinnawa Coastal Wetland... Epigean ant communities in Atlantic Forest remnants of São Paulo: a comparative study using the guild concept. The guilds constitute a valuable ecological tool, because they allow conducting comparisons among environments under different conditions. The ants can be used as ecological indicators, mainly for the monitoring of degraded forest areas. The aim of this research was to study guild organization among the epigeous Formicidae living in Atlantic forest remnants of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Ant collections were performed in three distinct Atlantic forest biome areas: arboreal littoral vegetation ("restinga") (Cananéia), semideciduous seasonal forest (Piracicaba) and dense ombrophylousforest (Pariquera-Açu). After identification, the ants were... Tipo: Journal article Palavras-chave: Ecological bioindicators; Ecosystems; Environmental monitoring; Formicidae; Hymenoptera.
