ERP European Recovery Plan (Marshall Plan) Found in 1947, the Marshall Plan was
thought of by the Americans. They would donate money to Europe to help recover
them. In return, Europe would start cooperation, and they would be allies of the USA,
so they would form a block against the Communist Soviet Union.
GDR German Democratic Republic Communist East Germany during the Cold War,
allies with Soviet Union.
ECSC European Coal and Steel Community Thought of by Jean Monnet in 1950,
published by Robert Schuman. It was a cooperation between coal mining and iron/steel
industries of France, Germany and any other country wishing to join. It would have a
supranational body (High Authority) having complete control over coal and steel. It
would make preservation of peace, faster growth of prosperity and greater European
influence in the world.
EDC European Defence Community The six members of the ECSC would create this
together with the EPC to form a strong bloc against the Communist East, now that the
Korean War had broken out. However, France dropped out.
EPC European Political Community Another way to form a strong bloc against the East,
thought of mostly by Monnet again, but did not continue as France dropped out.
NATO North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Military alliance found in 1949 as a reaction
to the growing Soviet Union, to every country who felt threatened by them became
members (USA, Canada, West Europe mostly, Turkey). West Germany joined after
EDC and EPC failed.
WEU Western European Union Informal forum for military cooperation, but by far not
as important as NATO.
EEC European Economic Community Found by Johan Willem Beyen in 1954, as a
successor of the ECSC which started to loose importance. It would start as an Economic
Union and later extended to a customs union. Paul Henri Spaak was spokesman.
Benelux Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg Cooperation between the 3, sometimes
seen as the example for European cooperation, but had hardly any results.
Euratom European Community for Nuclear Energy Organisation for development of
nuclear energy, as coal and steel lost importance, but nuclear energy gained importance.
EFTA European Free Trade Association Free trade agreement with Brittain and 6 small
European countries, but had no positive stimulus for Brittish economy.
EC European Community (Common Market) EEC, ECSC and Euratom merged to form
the EC, but the name EEC was used till 1992.
EMS European Monetary System Organisation which took care of all different
Currencies, so they would be worth the same
ECU European Currency Unit Stepping stone for the Euro
EU European Union 2 new pillars together with the EC(Common foreign and security
policy&police and judicial cooperation in criminal matters) Intergovernmental basis.
Was agreed upon in the Maastricht Treaty signed in 1991, came into force in 1993.
