Rock Type – Definition and Formation
Rock Type 1: Sedimentary
Rock
 Sedimentary Rock –
Formed by deposition
and cementation of
that material
 Dull color, easy to
scratch, appears in
layers, could contain
fossil
Rock Type 2: Igneous Rock


Igneous Rock –
Melting happens
below ground and
crystallize below
Earth’s surface, and
the slow cooling
allows large crystals to
form
Mixed colors, no
layers, harder to
scratch, formed by
heating/cooling
Rock Type 3: Metamorphic
Rock
 Metamorphic Rock –
Transformation of a
pre-existing rock that
is subjected to high
heat and pressure
 Shared characteristics
– could have layers
(mostly vertical),
fossils, and/or crystals
How Rocks Get To Certain Locations
Volcanic Activity
Lava deposited on top of
previous layers
Levels of igneous rocks can be
evidence
Uplift
Rock that was once deep
below the surface has been
brought up to the surface
Different types of rock
(particularly igneous and
metamorphic) at the bottom of
mountains/cliffs
Burial
Igneous and Metamorphic
rock form below the surface
Rocks may fall and pile on
one another
